They should cut out the act where they make you think its illegal. Scene one the dude says if the law pulls them over they can say its spring water. The next scene the dude has a giant red sticker on his truck window that says moonshiner.

How much money do you think they make from "bootlegging" compared to a discovery channel paycheck? I like watching these dudes, but don't let them fool you.

Their rationale is that unless the cops physically catch them with untaxed liquor, they can't do anything. Because they can't prove its actually liquor

I grew up just down the road from Nelson County, where they film most of the Virginia portions of this series (as well as Amherst County and my own home town of Lynchburg, which is/was featured in the intro for several years). It's a pretty big open secret - none of these guys are actual 'shiners. They either produce well below the legal quantity limit or have state distilling permits, which aren't hard (or particularly expensive) to get here, Kentucky, Tennessee, or North Carolina. Just for those of y'all not in the USA, who may not be aware.

PS: The whole cast of Moonshiners has Distilling license, they just go with the woods to make it more believable and more interesting. They are really making liquor but it gets sold in in Sugarland Distilling.
