If it's anything like the 2080 you can build your own patches. You can start with a couple of saw waveforms (tones) and the apply octaves, fine tune, filters etc. Each patch can have at least four waveforms and shed loads of manipulation on each waveform then even more on the overall patch. These can then be saved into the user area. There are heaps of raw synth waveforms to choose from (saw, tri, square, PWM etc.) It doesn't have to be a ROMpler.

Hi, I'm from the 'future'. Just a tip if you want to have those XV-5080 sounds in hardware form and don't want to buy a second hand unit (if you can). The recently released Roland MC-101 (and 707) Groovebox contains all the patches of the XV-5080. The 128 patches of the USER bank of the XV-5080 are spread over the banks of the MC-101. The 896 patches of the XV-5080's Preset Groups A through G are all contained in The MC's Bank E, in the same order. The 256 patches of the XV-5080's Preset Group H (GM2 Group) are contained in the even larger Bank F of the MC-101. Furthermore you can have 4x those patches played on the MC-101 (it has 4 channels) and the MC-707 can even do that 8 times, as it has 8 channels. The MC's have about 4x more patches available, so the XV-5080 makes up about a quarter of the patches. The MC-101 is tiny and can even work on four AA batteries, so it is versatile and space saving. You can easily layer different patches when using external midi (set channels to the same midi channel). Editing patches on the MC-101 isn't really possible at the moment, though on the MC-707 it is, but that is quite a different (and more expensive) beast.
@@floridahiker1503 Thanks, you might be right, but from what I hear what Paolo plays here, they sound the same. The only gripe I have is you can't edit patches on the MC-101, but we might get an editor some day. Still, this is a great little box of sounds and a great option. I would love to own a real XV-5080 but I have no space, lol.
