This video is great because it encouraged me to explore this feature on my XV-5080, which I never tried during the many years I've owned it. Thank you for that! But also, what makes this video fun is seeing you react to your old sample CDs as if you were seeing an old, beloved friend again after so many years. Awesome. Cheers!
Awesome Paolo!, you master all your gear X-) and also you explain how to use it in a such a straight foward way. I remember buying old Keyboard magazines just to dig in vintage stuff (10 years old magazines in 2004 / 2005 ) and seeing all those samples cds adverts that gave me goose bumps :-P . They sound awesome in the 5080. The first example was sooo Jan Hammer style!. This tutorials makes all of us shout "YEAH!". Thanks!.
Thanks for this. I rarely use this feature since I have 8 cards loaded in mine but I rediscovered my trove of Akai Sample CDS. I also have a 2GB Jazz drive as well. I am going to give the XV a workout this weekend.
Scott Sjmc last time I broke out my old Yamaha sampler I was very excited to rediscover my old sample collections. After a few hours of navigating a small green screen, listening to digital filters from the 90s and waiting for loading I remembered why I put everything away in a closet 😁
I still have my XV-5080 and 128MB sample ram and smart media cards (although no longer have a SCSI CD drive). The old Roland S-series libraries are still pretty nice, but I think one of the best uses of the sample RAM is to take sampled waveforms from other synths/instruments as raw sources for the excellent Roland sound engine. So you can sample in eg the Wavestation or M1 samples, or some meaty analog oscillators, and give them a Roland flavour. Very cool!
Hi, Ben, I agree wholeheartedly! In fact I have a bunch of single waveforms in my archives that I created of the years from synths (including fairly rare units like Syntorchestra and Davolisint which I regret having sold) - I need to dust those off and use them as waveforms for patch buildup
SCSI CD player, smart media cards... really old school indeed :-) (says the guy who uses Revox and Akai reel to reel and Nakamichi and Tascam cassette decks)
If you set-up a performance with different choir patches per channel you can do some serious Gregorian / medieval stuff. Especially with a bit of Celt / Uillean. Some amazing atmospheric film scoring stuff if you're into that.
Hello, THANK YOU, thank you ... for recording and sharing. You probably are a very good teacher and know the pace and minimum of words and good content. I RECOMMEND. I have XV3080 and 5080 - loved these ROLANDS. GREETINGS.
I just love your sampler videos. I grew up on sample based music during the rave/jungle/hardcore days of the early 90s. I own the Korg Vocla Sample but it's not the same. To my ears it's how good music should sound.
Ok it's now 2023. Is there any freaking way to load sound samples into the 5080 WITHOUT the need for a scsi equipped cd player (they are really hard to find).
You have a gold mine with those old sample cds. If you made an MPC expansion for the new MPC's you would make a killing. People like some of those sounds they are still viable.
Nice video Paolo!! I've always wondered about that feature on that module. I am completely shocked because I though it could only read the L-CDX series of CDs because it was native for the XV-5080 but I guess I'm in for shock
Ahhh!! Classic jungle rave sounds! Did you ever get into the Spectrasonics CDs back in the 90s? Distorted Reality 1 and 2 or Bizarre Guitar? Those are my favorites.
It's basically the same structure as the old S- series samplers from Roland (10, 50, 550, 700, 760, 770 etc). Very neat feature I didn't have the option to test back in the day, but I still have my S760 and 770. :)
SynthMania Yeah, how I wished I could read those back in 1995 on my 760. But I had some audio sample CDs I sampled manually though... worked pretty well that too. 😂
Wow..my man, i really love that Mega Dance Jungle rave CD smaples. I wonder if its possible to find the loops in a download option? That way i could loop them in Ableton or my MPC One.
Thank you so much for doing this , had an xv for years but never attempted to load samples into it ( pathetic I know :) and its not really explained in the manual- so thanks for inspiring me to give it a go!
I bought a brand new 5080 back in the 90's and never got around to trying the sample import feature. The 5080 sure sounded great though, back in its day.
Dope video bro. These might be so-called dated until someone like Beyonce or someone else puts out a single with these types of beats. It’s new to the younger audience. It’s all about how you present it. I grabbed one of these like back in 2005 (?) Never knew I can put samples in from Akai or anything like that! I knew about the expansions. This really woke me up.
I've got two XV5080, one I picked up for £32 because it distorted really badly, unuseable but I fixed it and another one for £600. One has the sample ram in it, can't wait to use it after seeing how easy it is. Great video.
@@johndean5860 Does yours work OK at initial switch on then goes bad very quickly? I noted that all was OK when I switched it on then distorted really badly. My thoughts were something is failing under load/warmed up? Warmed up being the thing in this case. I got a tin of freezer spray then went round each chip spraying it with the freezer spray. I'd pretty much given up then thought, did i do that one? So sprayed it and the distortion disapeared. EUREKA! I decided early on that the fault was in the digital side because of the sound of the distortion and that it was within the effects. Anyway, turned out to be the voltage regulator feeding the two large DSP chips. Think it was 3V3 if I remeber right? Also the two caps on the input/output of the regulator had failed, measuring nowhere near their capacitance let alone correct esr. I replaced the regulator with a higher spec. and better panasonic caps. Works as it should do after that. Did the cap fail damaging the regulator or the other way round? My initial problem was I found some moron had cracked the psu board in half trying to get it out so have to maker a new pcb for that. I rigged up a +-15V & +5V supply to then find the real fault.
