I'm cringing so hard at how I couldn't communicate this entire video 😂😂😂😂 thank you so much for taking me through this open water swimming madness!! Excited for more collabs together in the future!!! 👊
It's obvious that you were experiencing afterdrop (the first stage of hypothermia). I think you were in the water a little too long for that first swim. Be careful. When you see yourself getting confused, that's the time to get out and get warm. Fergus should have seen that. Of course the wetsuit was a good buffer.
I'm 72 and have been cold water swimming for 15 years. Thank you, Fergus. Your humor, self-effacement and clarity offer wonderful, inspiration and encouragement to all those who can benefit from your thoughtful wisdom on the subject. Bravo, good man!! We swim till there's frost on the pumpkin and beyond here in the Hudson Valley. The iceman swimmeth.
Nice! Idk Where you are from, but If you are from a cold place, How do you deal with the cold in the Winter? Is it not freezing? Bc i kind of want to do more open water Swimming knowing the effects of Chlorine in Swimming pools. Kind of want to do less of it.
Good tips, but did you keep getting in and out of the water between steps? If so, no wonder you were shivering so much with that and the cold water! Definitely need to get out of the wetsuit and into warm layers before the pizza. As you said though, the worst is over after that. 😀
Booties will make big difference, standing around making videos makes you cold 🤣get in get done and get the f*** out . Done 3 deg riverwater other day in trunks first time , yeah cold but only 3 mins and then toasty getting dressed. Ive been colder in a wetsuit cos it lasts longer and you get hypothermic if you dont keep moving. Had previously only done 6 deg in 5mm suit. Its fun with people cos you all complain how cold it is and laugh and then feel good after. It is empowering and it has health benefits, I think you done really well x
Three more things I'd add in. 1) mental prep for the washing machine start (social distancing was great for more civilised swim starts!) if they go back to mass starts. 2) Don't rely on other's sighting, and just following a swimmer in front. It helps, but you might end up zig-zagging! 3) Post swim cake is mandatory 😄 Great video, I love the collab and content, and I adore the swimming in particular!
Yep my first open water swim in super cold water like that was a bit rough. Definitely takes your breath away… which isn’t ideal for endurance! Great video! Enjoyed as always.
I watched this and you have inspired me to give open water swimming a go, I swim pool all the time but said to my self that this year is the year, thanks for the tips
Super helpful! Thank you. I was and am like her in this video. First Tri in one week and I pray to God it’s not choppy. I’ll just do my best, breathe slowly and sight sight sight.
Loved the video!! Great to provide this unfiltered view on a first OW swim. And a great advert for Porty!!! Also, those pizza slices looked outstanding!!!!!
Good to see you smashing it Fergus - I organised your golf day a few years back at Burhill and sorted some sponsorship if you remember! Nice to see you doing so well mate.
This is super interesting, I did my first open water triathlon with no help like changing my technique or anything. But I did it? The swim was by far the hardest. That was a few years ago and I really want to do another one!
Great tips!! I’m fairly comfortable swimming in open water, but will be doing my first OCEAN open water in a few months. How do you deal with getting salt water in your mouth when you breathe? I tried for the first time today and thought I was going to be sick after 200m. Thank you!!!
Spit has been the best anti fog ever since goggles existed and it's free. And peeing yourself once in the water is a good way to keep you warm as well.... From a scuba diver
Awesome Vid again man!! You should get Douglas Crayford in the water, I’ve never met him and I don’t know him but I bet he would not be scared and would do an awesome job! God bless 🙏
Anyone would feel safe with him😊.... I went into an extremely deep depression and wanted to end myself but one day decided to get in the water and it was this feeling of just being not broken anymore

Hey man doing my first triathlon, My wetsuit gives me great buoyancy but I can’t get over the mental block of thinking I’ll sink in open water. Any tips?
Cheers guys! On my way to my first IronMan too, and have similar feelings about open water... haha, preparing to get in when the days get a bit longer. Thank you for the helpful tips!

No not cringe, that’s actually so relatable though 😂 when I’m around new people I struggle to form full sentences 😂😂
You smashed it! Look forward to a 5km open water swim together in the future 👀
I totally get it, it’s like a pre- hypothermia, your brain is floating in thick mud 😂 been there
It emphasizes how hard it is to get your breath in cold water! Perfect example of how we all feel!

Can’t agree more on point 3 😂
I’m so happy you guys are making videos together, I’ve been following you both and love to see some shared content!
Awesome to hear, thanks for watching!
Dish soap also works as anti fog
Yep my first open water swim in super cold water like that was a bit rough. Definitely takes your breath away… which isn’t ideal for endurance!

Haha it does improve though! Thanks for watching!
I watched this and you have inspired me to give open water swimming a go, I swim pool all the time but said to my self that this year is the year, thanks for the tips
Great video! I really like these collaborations with other Gymshark athletes!
Thanks for watching! More to come 👊🏼
Loved this video - great tips and wow! you did brilliantly @nuttyfoodiefitness that was awesome for a first swim - I am still building up!!
Thanks for watching!
Getting the drone footage makes for an awesome video..thank you
It sure does 👊🏼
Super helpful! Thank you. I was and am like her in this video. First Tri in one week and I pray to God it’s not choppy. I’ll just do my best, breathe slowly and sight sight sight.
BTW I saw in Port Phillip Bay (Melbourne Aust.) the water temp is 10c at the moment
Amazing video don’t stop doing what you do @Fergus!!!
Thanks man!

They were indeed!

Ah Miles, hello! Hope you're doing okay my man! Appreciate it, thank you!
You mention the siting being a change. What about breathing on one side. Do you breathe like that in the pool
I do indeed - only breathe on my right hand side 🤝
@@ferguscrawley95 thanks might need to switch that up really struggling in open water vs pool for air

Get it booked in 👊🏼

Very useful thank you guys!
Open water swimming has always been my nemesis. Kudos.
It's a tough thing to get into for sure!
Brilliant video thanks Fergus! Keep debating open water later this year when it opens locally near me and these tips have helped ease some fears!!
You definitely should give it a go!
Give it a go! Hopefully this makes clear that your first attempt shouldn’t be anything more than getting a feel for it! Best of luck!
Fergus Crawley you’re 100% right, take the little wins...will give it ago for sure & thanks for the advice & encouragement!
Some of my faves 🥰 loving ur collabs!
👊🏼 thank you!
One of the best tips I received was to practice swimming with your eyes closed in the pool as you can not always see in the open water.
Not something I’ve ever tried! Sometimes the chlorine is thick enough though 😂
Just watched nuttyfoodiefitness video and now yours 😬 subscribed 🤪
Awesome! Thank you 👊🏼
Julle is ysters! Well done. You guys are such an inspiration
Thanks for watching!
Hi Fergus, can you do a video at some point for triathlon kit for a beginner please? Thanks
Will get it booked in for sure! Thanks for watching 👊🏼
@@ferguscrawley95 Also, how to get a wetsuit to fit a Hybrid athlete with a v-shape, narrow hips and big thighs. Your Huub looks like it does the job?

Great video and fair play doing 5c for your first OWS!
I can’t believe how calm the water is!
Very rare haha! Tbf, so is the ☀️ so we had a good day for sure!

He sinks bro.

Do you think the booties and gloves help for a triathlon?
Too much! But it seemed Fergus understood that 🙂 Bulk and bodymass makes a huge difference when trying to start warm
What thickness wetsuits are you using for that 6 degrees.
I
I liked it. Genuine people. It's really scary your first time.
Definitely taps off weather that like 🏊🏼♂️
Can confirm.
I thinnk the title "all you need to know open water swim" it doesn't represent what you show.
I like how Andre Wiersig approach the topic: you have to conditioning your organism for a while to cold water, or you won't suceed
He conditioned submerging in freezing water tub for years
Is not a joke, if you enter hipotermia stage, you are done unless you have a coach next to you that pull you out of water ontime
Is the stroke akin to a lifesaving front crawl? Would it be the same in warmer water?
A little bit, somewhat exaggerated here so it was clear - and temp doesn’t matter, more choppiness of the water!
No fn way she did that bare foot 🦶
What a monster
The booties make a huge difference to how you feel in terms of body warmth

Great to hear they were helpful!
I would add booties and gloves to the wetsuit double cap and a tow float 😂 with that i am 100% sure i wll be back the shore safely
anti fog? mate its gotta be the finger spit for me
For the algorithm
Respecc 👊🏼
tiny Tyson Fury defeated by Luke warm water :) only Joking, good effort
Na it’s not the cold it’s the whole Ocean that’s scary tf
Her suit looks too big, it's baggy as hell
