  • Sometime this winter I decided to figure why my truck had to warm up so long, I had made a video of the carburetor last winter so I could see what was going on, and hoped someone on UA-cam might be able to tell me if something was wrong. No one noticed the problem, but a year later I eventually figured it out and fixed it.

Same issue on my 78 Dodge van. For those who have the same or a similar vehicle, the part can be found under the name "Standard Motor Products CV163" - looks the same as the one shown in this video. One tip, as a temporary fix or to diagnose, just wind the coil spring backwards to bend it back into a tighter shape. If the coil isn't too bad, that should fix it for a while til it loosens up again. You also might try adjusting your idle mixture screw. I found a tighter spring and adjusted idle kept it from bogging down while warming up.

Nice truck. There should be a control unit between the Chock and power source (Ideally IGN or other switched 12VDC). It's a time and temp controller, so it's not running al the time during normal weather. Could not see if you deleted it or not. Small rectangular box, sometimes with a ceramic resister along side of it. Highly recommend it be used, because those heaters can pull 15 amps.

Also my 79 has a frustrating habit. After the choke comes off and temp gauge is at about 40% of full run hot, when you come to a stop sign and pull away, as the truck shifts to second gear you get a stumble like it's starved for gas and as it makes the shift the stumble increases and you might get a back fire through the carb.

I got a 75 dodge, new carb, won’t idle right without setting choke idle up. But it will clunk in gear hard and it will idle bad. And stall. I really never thought about that part. I appreciate it. I’ve never seen any videos about the 70’s model 318’s and I’ve been clueless.

Cool truck man!!!: its like they say; "they don't make them like they use to"!; and that really does seems to be the truth too!!. Nothing electronic in the engine on that truck; just everything straight mechanical!!! Cool!!! :)

problem 3 of Dodge: After about 15 min of running, full hot, AOK, it will start to run rough and then stall. Driving without the engine cover or air cleaner I can see the carb flood so much gas oozes out between the baseof the carb and the gasket. Then I have to it there for 3-4 min. with the throttle wide open to let the gas evaporate, then I will give it a good long crank with wide open throttle and it will start. Sometimes it will do it again in the next 15 min.
I had the mechanic rebuild the carb twice........still does it.

EPA restrictions on american car makers in 1970's screwed up performance of v8 engines all around....Chevy had the best carb and choke set up I think.... Chryslers would flood easy until warmed up....after warmed up they ran great.

My 79 Van does that too. It wont start if it has been sitting. You look in the carb and you can see the jets squirting gas into it. But like yours you have to keep doing it three pumps, crank, three pumps crank. Now the strange thing is, if you squirt a two second blast of starting fluid in the air horn, it catches immediately, and usually stays running...........Why?

cold starts; turn the key, let the gas gauge go up, then pump the gas. after that try starting the truck.

What if all the sudden the truck stalls out when you take your foot off the gas and won’t idle? It idled before and starts up every time but we can’t get it to idle.

Where does the electrical part of the new choke thermostat get plugged into? and also do you have a fast idle solenoid in the back of your carburetor ?
where does that get plugged into if you know thank you

That's the right carburetor for your truck there should be some connector to plug in if not you have to create a hot wire to get 12 volts to the solenoid I believe

Instead of pumping it several times pump it once and slowly let iit off it will start quicker. An ur supposed to let carb cars warm up dude for at least 2 min that's why it idles fast upon startup an than step on the gas while I. Park in the idle will reset Than u go

Thermostatic choke pull off, open the choke as that spring gets warm to hot,the warmer the engine, the more the spring expands and opens the choke, all the way open when the engine is a operating temperature, make sense????

I have a 75 dodge D100 with a 318 and the same carb setup. My choke thermostat is identical to that one. Where does that wire plug into that comes out of the tstat? Mine is unplugged and I cant find anywhere it plugs into. Is it a powersource for the thermostat? I thought it was just a hot air choke and not electric. I thought about running a wire to it that is powered when the key is in the on position. Please help! LOL.

I'm looking for that as well, typically I connect to the charge only side off the alternator so it only opens when running and not just ignition on. But dodge is new to me, although typically the same I'm getting 6 volts on that wire on the alt. The ignition side is 12 volt but the choke will open if not started right away. Want to know the factorys connecting. Mine didn't come with electrical assist so I have no idea. Please answer us man! Where's your choke connected????
