    I love my Avian Vet!!! Dr. Stephen Fronefield in Sugar Land TX (just outside of Houston). My oldest bird, a quaker, has been seeing him for 17 years. I have 5 other birds as well and all have received very good care from Dr. Fronefield and the staff at his office.

      @Tiél MK They are allowing one owner in the room with their pet. Face masks still required. When doing the exam they will take the bird to the back, perform the exam and bring the bird back. Once bloodwork is ready the vet will come back into the room and you will be able to ask questions and he will go over any findings in the bloodwork or gram stain.

    Last year when Squirt had her physical, she told Dr.Burke, "bye bye", And this year she was excited to see her and never told her to leave. I love my avian vet Dr. Burke she's awesome and she makes house calls. Which is amazing because Squirt bird does not do well in the car.

    Yesterday I went to my local parrot shop. There was a 10 year old Red-Fronted Macaw for adoption $1,000 with a big cage. As we were asking about him the owner of the shop called and said they were going to do something with him and he was no longer available. He was fully flighted until he was five, and then they started clipping his wings. Not being able to fly stressed him out so much that he started plucking his feathers. His owners moved to Alaska and couldn't take him. If he was still available you would have another free-flight student.

    Love these videos, they are SO VERY helpful. Here is a question, do you find the more you are learning, the harder it is to trust or accept a vet? I had the privilege of seeing your 5 part vet series on your Patreon channel. It was and still is the best bird information videos I have ever seen. Wish you could put them on DVD or download and market them. That was right around the time of the fires in Australia, the vet is incredible! If your a fan of birds, see those videos. Finally love all your birds but Tusa is my favorite.

Could you please elaborate on why you mentioned it is hard to trust and accepts vets with the more information you learn? So wish I knew this prior to a vet visit. I had said whatever she needs because I had no clue and from what I can see they just did wellness check. Which consisted of body and eye check, listened to breathing and felt over her body. Nothing was mentioned about any of test that should have been done especially considering I found her on an outside bird feeder on day. And yes, I told avian this. Unfortunately this is only avain near me. Thank you for all that you do ❤️

    Great info. But during COVID, I cannot go in, just hand the birds over to my avian vet. I always ask questions, which is why I justify paying the huge fee ($125 per Conure, $175 for medium size birds). They look down the throat, spread the wings, trim the nails and beak.
    Bloodwork is extra. To get the tests my rescue wants fecal tests and blood work that would cost me $3,000, which means I cannot adopt.
    I look at my birds every day. I have had them for 6 years and have never had a sick bird.
    My avian vet is almost two hours away. Closer is an exotic vet that other people I have talked to with birds but again no access due to covid.

      I got the feeling she was referring to when they travel internationally, but depending on what they're doing next as to what state they will be re-entering the country into & therefore what vet will be involved (not to mention main international arrival locations are going to have way more than 1 vet doing health checks on entering animals). Even something like a cruise (which they have worked on), if they leave from Florida, return to Florida, but the ship has docked in other countries along the way, presumably a full quarantine health check would be needed on arrival, arriving into LAX or JFK would be different teams involved, plus at the other end there would be health checks to enter the other countries too.
      The care taken of the birds is 100% irrelevant to quarantine requirements. You wouldn't need cites for your birds either, but that's not cause they look at your parents & think they're caring for their birds well

They handled her so roughly that she was vomiting all the way home from stress (she does not get car sick) and she was so traumatized I haven’t been able to get her near a vet’s office without her screaming. I go to a holistic vet for my dogs... issues with dogs is normal vets over vaccinate them. For that reason I go to a holistic vet who believes in raw feeding and titer testing. Since changing and going raw my dogs have got so much healthier!

      I took my rabbit to a holistic vet once, they were absolutely useless! I ended up getting homeopathics unofficially from my human doctor & then the rest of the treatment from a proper rabbit vet. Rabbit had an abscess & the holistic vet knew NOTHING about abscesses in rabbits & tried to treat it like a dog or cat, that would have cilled him had I not seen a proper rabbit vet in time! So please be really careful with this & exotics like birds!

      @@scottishgirl1100 It wasn't the holistic vet part that was the problem, I'm sure she would have been great with a dog or a cat, BUT dog & cat vets are NOT competent in treating birds, which is what this channel is about.
      It's quite frankly irresponsible to suggest taking a bird to a dog vet just cause they're a holistic vet. Would you let your holistic vet treat you? If not, then you shouldn't let her treat your bird, cause there's really no difference! Your vet is clearly NOT an avian vet & you have no idea the damage a doctor trained in a different species can do when trying to treat a species they're not trained in treating!
      Very irresponsible & you're going to cill someone's beloved bird & destroy the credibility of all holistic vets treating all animals if you continue trying to spruik dog doctors to treat birds!

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 3 роки тому

      @@scottishgirl1100 you're not going to find a holistic avian vet though! Avian vets are just too rare. Just read the comments to see the trouble people are having finding an avian vet for their bird & imagine if that list was reduced to only avian vets how much more difficult it would be then!
      I'm not in America, I'm in Sydney Australia, in a city of 5 million people, there were 3 holistic vets when I looked for my rabbit a few years back, there are currently 2 respected avian vets in Sydney, neither of whom are holistic vets. There is one exotic vet that does quite a bit of diet stuff etc with animals, heading the holistic direction, he's also very willing to treat birds, but those in the know advise to avoid him, cause he really doesn't know what he's doing with birds & has caused a lot of problems with them for many people.
      I'm sorry if you're genuine & I've offended you, but your comments come across as sprucing/advertising a certain system & that really conserns me when I know first hand the harm it can cause & I know how hard it is to find an avian vet, so people may be tempted to follow your advice if they can't find one & it would be a disaster for them, likely cilling their beloved pet if they do it, so I felt it was important to speak up. I was SO close to losing my beautiful bunny cause of my mistake!

      I have 2, one male one female. Females have all green bellies.. They are part of the Senegal family, Poicephalus. Very big personalities. They can be aggressive to other birds as well as their own species. Mine are in different cages but get to interact during the day with each other. More than 6 hours and the female will start beating up on the male. I have worked with them and senegals at a sanctuary and they will gang up on one and attack it, knocking it to the ground and not letting it come back to eat. At the sanctuary they were in large flight aviaries but it didn't matter. If you have other birds just give lots of supervision when out. If this would be an only bird then you will have a great time with him. Not overly loud. Very smart.

Would you recommend that I take them to a vet right away or wait until I establish a working relationship with the bird? I am definitely looking for an avian vet in my area. I live in North Hills of Pittsburgh. My vet will not let me come in with my birds. She examines them and takes them into her office and send them back out with her assistant. It’s not just COVID times. Her assistant said she always does this. I feel very uncomfortable with this. The vet I used to go to would let me come in but he was not a certified avian vet however he did see lots of birds. He did seem really nervous with my bird. Also he used to have a male cockatoo and got a female. He shared that he made a whole room for them but they never came out of the room then. He gave them away as a freezer cup all. Is this reasonable? I did not think so. I have been so uncomfortable with the whole situation what should I do?

    2 vets I saw do not do annual blood cultures on my birds unless there is an indication they may be ill, especially because they are small (2 cockatiels and 1 gold-capped conure). Do you think CBCs should be tested every year even if the bird is small and appears healthy? My vet also gave me an article about UV light and recommended it since there isn't enough nice weather in Pittsburgh PA to take my birds out. What are your thoughts?

    • @brockwarren9222
      @brockwarren9222 3 роки тому

      Hi Leah,
      Annual blood testing is a nice touch to the annual health examination and are a great reference for serial testing and benchmark if/when your bird becomes ill. My practice recommends triennial cbc (complete blood count), biochemistry (basic organ markers for liver, kidney etc) and radiographs. I’m unsure what blood culture you are referring to - ? Typically we will do a psittacosis antigen PCR and immunicomb antibody test if it is a new bird - is this the culture you are referring to? Photoperiod is very important for the physiology and reproductive cycles of birds. I have not heard of UV light supplementation for birds, reptiles yes, although I do work in beautiful sunny coastal Queensland, Australia and light is never a problem for us ... often we are reducing day length in our pet birds. I would be interested if you could let me know the details of the UV light handout/study you have been provided for my own perusal.

      Two vets I have seen don’t draw blood annually for tests such as CBC, especially because they are small and they say it’s harder to get enough for a sample. I wish I had bloodwork to refer to because I found out recently my cockatiel has a calcium deficiency. Not sure if it is related to diet. training :) look at her other videos for that issue. Target training & rewarding extending the time doing something should work for you, as seen in other videos on this channel :) Curtain's obviously more interesting or safer than your hand or shoulder right now, appropriate treat distribution should change that :) I don't know which specific video's best sorry, I've watched too many & lost track of what's what, but just watch a bunch of them that relate to training & they should answer your question. Start with the target training, then you can target back to your shoulder to begin the process :)

    I'm still trying to figure out when to take my birds for their first check. I've had them for about 2 months now, was expecting progress to be much faster than it has been, given how it started, but they came from an abusive home, so are really freaked out by everything, but making good progress with me, but I'm worried poking & prodding is going to freak them out completely, even just putting them into a travel cage somehow to get them there & back is going to totally stress them with how they are.
    Which is more important? vet or getting them comfortable & trusting of me? Anyone have any thoughts?
    On adoption one would bite & couldn't be touched at all, other would tolerate anything, but sit & rock & pluck from the stress after. Both now communicate with me clearly instead of biting & stressed plucker is now dominate & will bite if her communication's not respected. Both will target in & around their cage, both will step up if hand is placed at the end of the perch so they can just shimmy across, but won't go beyond this & freak out if I try to move my hand while theyr'e on it (plucker's cute, she'll squark at me while biting my hand for me having dared move it lol but takes days to get her to step up with both feet again after it) & neither will tolerate any sort of touching from my hand, plucker will enjoy my nose near her, other one will lick treats off my hand, but any touching they can't handle - yet. So do I sort this out so I can go to the vet stress free? Or go to the vet now despite how far it will set them back? I have a couple of really good avian vets within an hour of my home, so that part's not a problem at least

      Hi Carol,
      Your bird should be seen by an avian veterinarian as soon as possible to complete a thorough physical exam, confirm a diagnosis and put a treatment plan into place. From your limited notes, it sounds like your bird may be attempting to lay, potentially some coelomic pain/discomfort. Hope it all goes well.

      HI Scouse,
      I am so sorry for your loss. I would recommend a post-mortem with an avian veterinarian to potentially make a diagnosis. BirdTalks touches on the 'masking phenomenom' in birds in this video and is likely the reason for this sudden tragedy. Birds will often present as 'healthy' while masking underlying disease, pain etc, as a way to not alert predators to their vulnerability.

      @@adityabhardwaj2237 so put her out of reach while you give your cockatiel attention & let her watch your cockatiel do step up, then let her come out & do step up with you, or get ignored while you give your cockatiel attention by doing step up training again & if she bites you again, then again she goes back into her cage or other location that prevents her being able to do so. When she does then pay attention to the step up training (plenty of really good videos on this channel on how to do that training with difficult birds) then be really sure to give her LOTS of attention for it! Ignoring & denying them attention is only helpful if they also get huge amounts of attention if doing the right thing.
      I had lots of trouble with tantrums & biting with my 2 as I first tried to train them together/same cage set up & they were jealous of the other one getting the attention, but by staying alert to their attention needs & sharing my time between them & making sure they knew they weren't going to miss out, along with walking out of the room or ignoring them to work only with the other if they did bite or act inappropriately, they're now both great with waiting their turn (most of the time lol) & certainly no biting if I'm giving the other one attention now, they know they're going to get their share of attention too if they're patient :)

    How would an avian vet get blood from a gcc

    • @brockwarren9222
      @brockwarren9222 3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bridget,
      The preferred collection site is the right jugular vein. In birds, the right jugular vein is larger than the left, and for this reason the right side is preferred. Other collections sites (veins) may be too small in a green cheek conure - basilic vein (wing) and medial metatarsal vein (leg). Often veterinarians will do a quick general anaesthetic for collection or they may opt to collect when the bird is conscious. In the case for conscious blood collection, I have found almost all birds are more concerned with the handling and restraint rather than the vein puncture.

I will make this brief my first vet almost killed my bird, the second vet moved away, and the third vet which I have seen twice is not helping in any way. My 8 year old bird which I have had for eight years has been having trouble with her left leg, she is moving her leg slower when climbing or holding on to me, her left leg has been hot. My bird have not been able to fly since 2016 because her wing was fractured. What worries me the most is her left leg.My bird is eating she will not eat a chop but she does eat veggies sometimes, Pellets,seeds she is not very active even though I try to make her move around with foraging or having her climb down a rope. Thank you for the info Dr. Brock much appreciated.

      @@bridgetserrano2831 Sorry to hear have had not so great experiences with your vets. Sounds like your bird would benefit from a comprehensive diagnostic approach as lameness & lethargy in birds may be many things. Depending on more details in the history and a comprehensive physical examination - a blood profile and radiographs with pain relief would be a good start. Considering your bird is grounded, feet inflammation (pododermatitis) may be a single or co-morbidity, and would fit with the pain, heat and soreness you are seeing. Vet intervention is needed to manage your birds pain/lameness, and confirm a diagnosis. Hope all goes well and let me know what happens!
