I had a couple of his songs on my itunes, I saw a couple of videos this week, now have over 40 of his songs, wow, this is like waking up 45 years later and hearing someone new, he is fantastic. Reminds me of Deep Purple with a little Thin Lizzy in him. Fantastic.
My best guitarist when I play Taste album 70 or 71. He is my favirite. R.I.P. Rory and play with angels. I play guitar 52y . He is guilty. He is guitar player & multyinstrumentalist, wrighter, composer and big vokal. The Irish brought music to America before anyone else. Real country is the original Irish music.
It’s 2023… I first heard of Rory in 1981, my late good friend Jerome Melton, with GREAT musical taste, turned me on to him. The Rory albums got played till they darn near wore out! Jinxed is one of my favorite songs to this day . Rock in Peace Rory!!
When Rory played in 1973 at the San Bernardino Swing Auditorium, he was the opening act for Deep Purple. We screamed for 3 more encores before DP came on the stage. He stole the show and my buddies and I quickly became Rory fans and bought a lot of his albums.
Tremendously underrated yet Tremendously the best ! Why ? He did it his way ! He is the gem. I enjoy the others yet seeing him made me feel like he was just a cat, like us common folk. No pretentiousness. flannel shirt, jeans, sneakers. Another never to be repeated. Many praises !
We had a table at the El Mocambo waiting for Rory to come onstage when he came out everyone yelled RORY..RORY , I had my arm up and he must have noticed me walking to the stage because he turned back to our table an shook my hand. That set the night right I’ll tell you, I’m 65 now and still remember that night.🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Good going on that .wish I was there.i forgot he played there .I saw Rory on Toronto island, at the victory burlesque along with Mendelson and at the colonial before it shut down. lifetime memories.
@@yoneil4226McKenna Mendelson Mainline? My dad was a fan of both Rory and MM, he may very well have been at that show. Mendelson lived down the road from me up in cottage country. pretty eccentric artist, sadly he passed awaY in 2023. Cheers
He was my friends and my guitar hero. We first caught him live around 1971 or so and we saw him once or twice every year and usually sat on or directly in front of the stage. Living in the L.A. area he played here often. He was always pleasant , aproachable and always entertaining.
The one and only. No one came close then or now. Legendary live shows, never was a better live performer. Rory, and his band, WERE the 70s. A unique human being and musician, gone too soon. Rory g, always in our hearts and souls.
** I had the Pleasure of meeting Rory when he was at the London Sessions Playing with Jerry Lee Lewis ,way back in January 1973 --- fond memories of talking with him & he showed me a few licks on his guitar. --- he was & is a Very Tragic Loss to the real ,raw gut bucket blues !! ---
Seen Rory many times and played his music too. My greatest memory of him were two shows back to back on the same day at the Park West in Chicago. We got front-row seats, and when he ran out he ran straight toward us and high-fived the front row (knowing it was general admission and we waited hours to get in). But that wasn't the highlight of the evening, and nor were the six rolls of 36-count film. Nope the highlight was after playing two full incredible sets, we were slow in leaving, and while we were standing by the exit (inside), Rory came out with two men one on each side holding/walking him out, and all he kept on saying (to a nearly empty crowd now that the show was over) was "Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming out" with the most sincere tone of voice and trademark smile. Yes, that's the incredible moment I will always remember.
My favourite guitarist ever.He was a wizard,a genius,an entertainer.I have all his videos and he never ceases to amaze me.Listen to the little tricks he throws in,amazing. He wipes the floor with clapton,in fact he's on another level above, better than SRV,Bonamassa. His slide work is the very best.A sensational player with no peer. Agree or not,i dont give an irish fuck.
It's funny, I'm 56 years old and only recently found out about Rory. I've been a blues fan for 40 years but the basic legends Clapton, SRV, Carlos, knpofler, Gilmore but Rory is neck and neck with SRV to me, but this video alone is another example of what mythical God he was
I wore out three copies of the Irish Live 74 album and caught him as part of the Tull tour at the LA Coliseum in 1976. We somehow found ourselves in the third row and he was simply electric. His energy and drive was beyond my comprehension. I went home and looked and my Les Paul copy and just cried, knowing I'd never be able to play at that level. I still can't but I did manage to play in some bands much later and he's always an inspiration. I have a Rory Gallagher tee shirt and other guitarists always approach me and we talk about this man and how he impacted us.
He played Celtic blues, a lot of Irish style mixed in. He did not play blues like some old black guys. He went so far beyond that. Way beyond Clapton or any of them also. He was in that special beyond place, with Jimi, SRV, Duane, Frank Marino, Gary Moore.
+ Michael Craig: Excellent post, Michael. So cool....and truly WISE of you to cite Frank Marino in your list. You do know he's awfully sick, I understand. He said he's done touring for the rest of his life....and asked for "Believers".....like I am....to pray for him. You probably know all that, but in case you didn't.....there you have it. jbeinarizona
An absolute gentleman: modest, courteous, a purist, no star celebrity nonsense, incorruptible, uncorrupted . I saw him Xmas 72 concert Dublin National Stadium
I saw Rory Gallagher several times in Detroit in the mid 70s. Just when you thought a song was being played as hard as a song could be played, Rory would kick it up a notch. He never didn't give his all. Every time I hear a Rory gallagher tune it takes me back to 74 in Detroit.
I saw him many times. It was always spiritual. I saw many of the ‘big’ stadium bands like Floyd, Queen, Yes and the Stones etc all great but none of them spoke to me like Rory did. He was truly the accessible legend. I touched his guitar as did my future wife and we still talk about that moment 30 years later. He was so honest you felt he was playing for you. And he was.
Interviewed him '83. A true gentleman. He had something that Clapton, Beck, blah blah, simply didn't have. For all their technical brilliance, they had no soul. That's an Irish thing. And a black thing.
I'm so glad I just read your comment. I was washing my hands in a public restroom at a Motown live show, and black women walked in saying look at the white girl with so much soul I was jamming minding my own, and I'm almost 💯 percent Irish not knowing why these ladies invited me to a VIP section. They were family to performer and I just seen this comment explaining saying some Irish truly have lots of soul WOW. I met Smokey Robinson that evening because of my Irish soul, and I love Rory's music as well. ❤☘️
1975 my wife wanted to go to a Black Oak Arkansas concert. And there was some guy named Rory Gallagher opening for them. The next day I was at the record store when it opened and bought the Irish tour album. And spent the next week listening to it almost non stop. Then I went back to the record store to see if there were any other Gallagher albums. And the owner told me. They sold out the day I got mine. The day after the concert.
Grandissimo Rory ✌🏻
To me Rory is my all time favorite guitarist because he is the definition of being true to yourself and the antithesis of a sellout. You can hear it in his playing that he is who he is and was never a fraud
HeY.... tHANK YOU for putting this together.. my dad born in Ireland, me in South Africa. I'm surprised at how little the world actually knows about Rory. Treu Treu one of the best. nothing more left to say!! His music lives 4eva!! RIP Rory. Love & Peace - S-Africa!!
I was first exposed to Rory when I watched his concert broadcast on Nikelodeon in 1981 while I was in Macon, GA. I had never heard of him before. I grew up in LA, one of the most commercial radio spots in the world so I only heard about 100 bands played on a loop by KMET and KLOS during the the 70s and 80s. I was in 7th grade in 1981. He blew me away, left his guitar feeding back on the floor when he walked off stage. It was exhilarating. I went back home to LA after that summer and never heard of him again. I'd occasionally look in old record stores but even remembering his name came in snd out over the years. It wasn't until the internet age I was able to figure out who that guy was I saw in concert in the summer of '81. Now after watching this biography I am finally informed of his career.
Humble Pie were another amazing band with a fantastic singer, guitarist and songwriter with Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton on guitar with him that should have smashed America in a huge way . Rory was even greater as a bluesman and guitarist. The talent around was amazing. What a golden age for blues but sadly there were a few amazingly talented artists that never received the acclaim they so richly deserved, Eric Burdon was like Steve Marriott one of the great Blues singers, Joe Cocker was another. Cream, Eric Clapton, Blind Faith, Traffic, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Winter, the Stones, lynerd Skynerd were huge and it was well deserved but The Pie and Rory were just as great, at least equals with the best the world had to offer but they never had anything near for example Creams success. They were in my humble opinion really great like Prince, Pink Floyd or Deep Purple. Huge, ground breaking and groups like Black Sabbath were rock, Kiss were theatre rock as was Alice Cooper and the likes of T Rex, Bowie were glam with the birth of punk round the corner with the Tubes, New York Dolls and Iggy pop . For sure the greatest talents were Johnny Winter, Bob Dylan even more. Rory could've sold his soul to the freemasons and the devil for money but good on him he couldn't be bought, bribed and would never compromise his artistic integrity or respect for money, fame or sex. He always remained humble, true, honest with his fans even sticking 2 fingers up to management and the giant record companies and management and Peter Grant and Led Zeppelin did much the same but they had a heavyweight wrestler manager who was very smart, courageous with huge elephant nuts behind them. Yes Rory was so right and is a legend and bigger now he is gone like Hendrix, and Prince is another who was a once in 10 year great like Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd but groups like Hawkwind and artists like Roy Buchanon , Roy and Nick Harper are in fact amazing artists who were so unique yet so uncommercial who were the sort of musicians who were truely unique but not commercially a huge success. Thank god for these great geniuses who put music before money or fame. Thank you especially to Bob Dylan and Marley, The Animals and even Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Hawkwind , velvet underground , Doors who never always received the acclaim or respect they deserved. Even Prince, brilliant as he was really fought to be heard and the Allman Bros too. So many to mention like Peter Green also. Thank god for Roy Buchanon who really shook it up but only artists in the know have by idea of his quality like JH eff Beckj
I totally agree. Never got the recognition he deserved. Rory was absolutely brilliant. Excellent guitarist and singer, moreover he was an amazing musician.🎸
An Irish painter where I worked met him a few times in the bar and outside the venue. He spent a good while talking to him at the bar. No ego just a humble kind gentleman who clearly had time for everyone. That's rare in real life with strangers but to be like that and so cool, it's a true compliment and tip of hishat to those old original black greats like Albert and Freddie King, Buddy Guy. Gerry MC Avoy deserves a lot more recognition also as such a great blues and rock bass player. They complimented each other as did Rod Diath and Ted McKenna Kenna on drums as well as the keyboard player as a 4 piece and harmonica player later.
I had the good fortune to enjoy Taste at Leicester Uni. standing side stage with his brother in 1970. They had just very small PA, Rory with just Vox AC30 and no mics on the drums. The music energy coming of the stage was phenomenal. Notably Hendrix acknowledged him as his guitar primo maestro. Fortunate enough to see him play also on another occasion. Loved the comment by Martin Carthy (still standing up to the mike at 83, good on ya!) " Nobody forgets somebody like Rory. Do they?"
@ 45:00, I missed seeing Rory in St. Louis when I was 17. Couldn't get in, underage. Would've given my whole meager paycheck to get in. Now I own every Rory album, many in vinyl, many in cd.. Still not the same.
I saw Taste in 68 or early 69 at the Marquee and remember it like it was yesterday. At the time, it was all about the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream and Taste. Those were the bands everybody was into. I still think Taste’s debut album was among the best of all time!
For me he was always my favorite guitar player and my favorite person as a musician it’s very rare to be both of those things but he was every bit of that to me . That’s it no one comes close to Rory Gallagher in my book Nobody
I was so lucky to see him in Seattle warming up for a really drunk Johnny Winter. I wish I was a fly on the wall backstage. One of my top 5 shows ever.
The White Channel, thank you so much for a wonderful informative program & look into Rory's talents & life. It is so sad to not have him around, but his music will live on forever. Great job.
Thanks, you're very welcome. Rory Gallagher was one of the purest musicians of all time. His guitar skills were certainly unparalleled; yet he was also a brilliant songwriter, a gifted vocalist, and accomplished on sax, harmonica, and other instruments. The world was truly blessed by his talents and dedication to the craft. R.I.P.
This is an absolutely fantastic vid. Rory is King and always will be. I don’t think I’ll see his like on my time. Just been chatting to Gerry n Brendan. I’m happy n can rest his spirit in my mind now 🙏🙏🙏
In as much as Jagger/Richards have written some of Rock's most iconic songs, Rory like Jeff Beck are virtuoso musicians. Whereas Jagger's a virtuoso performer but musician wise the Stones are not even close. That's not meant as a knock, it is what it is.
Essentially, Rory is the Ultimate Musicians Musician Probably the greatest musician to come out of the best country in Ireland, The Peoples Republic Of Cork ✊
The God of Guitar ., From Rory music songs all others bands have take the music notes from his style playing guitar stay ing how he dance move to go out in heavy metal hardrock blues also and oteshs genres
Really enjoyed this documentary. One of the best I've seen on YT. At 2:44 narrator stated Rory was born March 2, 1949. That's incorrect. He was born March 2, 1948! LOL one little mistake but still greatly appreciate this posting.Thank u from all of us Rory fans!
Thanks G.Ward, I didn't notice it! "Ghost Blues" was broadcast by the Italian National TV- Rai 5 - www.televideoteca.it/rock-e-altra/rory-gallagher-ghost-blues-44174 - Rory Gallagher was musically special, in his guitar playing, songwriting, vocals & performance. Rory still lives on in each fan's heart, mind and spirit. We miss you Rory ❤
He was a pioneer of electrified blues, I think I know Rory Gallagher pretty well now, I wish he had better luck 🍀 with timing and management and label issues, he needed better more commercial material to reach the top shelf that others accomplished...ie, Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Beck, gibbons, Kath, Richards,Townsend. I think he should have teamed up with Gary Moore and some solid writers...Maybe the guys from CREAM...He did great on his own though, made some waves while he was able. Nothing to be ashamed of...
I just discovered this guy fairly recently. I'm starting to think maybe he was the best guitarist who ever lived, right up there with Jimi Hendrix. Allegedly, Jimi thought he was the greatest guitarist as well.
After all this time, who really cares who said what? The fact that people are still discovering him as a performer, and this amazing unique catalogue, says everything. He is timeless, and his soul and work will continue to influence artists & gather fans forever - that's his legacy.
I saw this before i think this is a shorter version of the documentary cause i remember some of the licks that were so awsesome. I was wanting to here them again. Rory Rory way awsesome
There are very famous bands and artists from Ireland that were commercially very successful but the 2 that stand out for their greatness in my opinion are some Shane MacGowan and Rory Gallagher and maybe Van Morrison. However Thin Lizzy U2 and The Cranberries, Stiff Little Fingers, the Undertones were more commercial and got mainstream radio and TV exposure more. Fairytale of New York with Kirsty Mc Call made the Pogues huge. Rory didnt even release a 45.
I don't think Rory trusted any of it, and being marketed like a pop star, just was not for him. I think in a sense, they tried to do the same thing with Stevie Ray Vaughan, but he didn't really need a lot of marketing. What is there to market? Both of them step out on the stage and if you cannot see their greatness, go home. And studio albums rarely capture these type of artists properly, as they are at their best live.
He wouldn't let the record companies dictate him. He didn't give the rights to the songs, release singles or music videos so he didn't get much promotion. He liked what he was doing on the level he was doing it. He still sold 30 million albums with little or no promotion which is great.
You may remember Jimi Hendrix's reponse when asked how does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world. "I don't know. You may want to ask Rory Gallagher". Irreplaceable geniuses.
Hey, Does anybody know if Rory and Stevie ray Vaughan ever met or collaborated..Ive searched but no results so far...for me they are so aligned. Thanks for any guidance..(musically there brothers)
One of the greatest, if not the greatest, lesser known guitarist ever; moreover, impeccable integrity. One of the few greats, to not sell out.

Do they?"
Thanx for posting this man's story!
This is how I feel as a 30 year old. Rory's been both my favorite guitarist and musician since my early 20s.
Absolute legend R.I.P Rory
many thanks for this impressive video
I was so lucky to see him in Seattle warming up for a really drunk Johnny Winter. I wish I was a fly on the wall backstage. One of my top 5 shows ever.
He was just brilliant.
CORK HAD A ROCK STAR SLEEP EASY RORY XXX MARGO🎸🎙🎶🎵🎼🎸♥️
Roy was true to his authentic self playing music for himself and his fans. Nothing else matters.
This is an absolutely fantastic vid. Rory is King and always will be. I don’t think I’ll see his like on my time. Just been chatting to Gerry n Brendan. I’m happy n can rest his spirit in my mind now 🙏🙏🙏
Long Live Rory!!
RORY GALLAGHER GENIUSZ GENIUSZ GENIUSZ nad GENIUSZAMI KOSMOS KOCHANI na zawsze dziękuję BARDZO
THAT IS THE MAN WITH THE REAL DEAL r.i.p.
In as much as Jagger/Richards have written some of Rock's most iconic songs, Rory like Jeff Beck are virtuoso musicians. Whereas Jagger's a virtuoso performer but musician wise the Stones are not even close. That's not meant as a knock, it is what it is.
Essentially, Rory is the Ultimate Musicians Musician
Probably the greatest musician to come out of the best country in Ireland,
The Peoples Republic Of Cork ✊
☘🇮🇪☘
Gary Moore was not bad either.
I was lucky 🍀 too find Rory…
The God of Guitar ., From Rory music songs all others bands have take the music notes from his style playing guitar stay ing how he dance move to go out in heavy metal hardrock blues also and oteshs genres
Really enjoyed this documentary. One of the best I've seen on YT. At 2:44 narrator stated Rory was born March 2, 1949. That's incorrect. He was born March 2, 1948! LOL one little mistake but still greatly appreciate this posting.Thank u from all of us Rory fans!
Thanks G.Ward, I didn't notice it! "Ghost Blues" was broadcast by the Italian National TV- Rai 5 -
www.televideoteca.it/rock-e-altra/rory-gallagher-ghost-blues-44174 - Rory Gallagher was musically special, in his guitar playing, songwriting, vocals & performance. Rory still lives on in each fan's heart, mind and spirit. We miss you Rory ❤
Jesus, when i hear that John Mayer is one of the gods of guitar I switch on random song of Mr.Gallagher.... )) World has gone mad guys, really )))
Roy Buchanan as well. Two of my favorites
Mayer and Bonamassa are both overrated
Thanks for uploadinh this gem again.
He opened for Santana when I saw him and I left saying he blew off Carlos Santana. He ripped super cool clean solos with passion!!!!!!
Rory seemed much more relax with TASTE one and two than he looked after with the responsibility of his own band
really feeling lucky that friends and me where able to meet him on a gig in a club in bremen. the legendary aladin club. in the nineties.
Forever loved my irish brother
his first LP ,truly wonderful ,sugar momma!
I was listening to him in the 70s amazing
I just discovered this guy fairly recently. I'm starting to think maybe he was the best guitarist who ever lived, right up there with Jimi Hendrix. Allegedly, Jimi thought he was the greatest guitarist as well.
no, that's urban legend.
After all this time, who really cares who said what? The fact that people are still discovering him as a performer, and this amazing unique catalogue, says everything. He is timeless, and his soul and work will continue to influence artists & gather fans forever - that's his legacy.

If Juan Martin says you're a monster of a guitar player, then my word, you are an absolute monster of a guitar player!
Grandiosa banda
Descanse en paz querido Rory Ghallager .
legend
I just subbed....and thank you for posting this magnificent piece about Rory.
My favourite.
rightious rory Gallagher....its a hard road
I saw this before i think this is a shorter version of the documentary cause i remember some of the licks that were so awsesome. I was wanting to here them again. Rory Rory way awsesome
The Wolverine of Guitar Players
The only man cooler than Clint Eastwood in 74
There are very famous bands and artists from Ireland that were commercially very successful but the 2 that stand out for their greatness in my opinion are some Shane MacGowan and Rory Gallagher and maybe Van Morrison. However Thin Lizzy U2 and The Cranberries, Stiff Little Fingers, the Undertones were more commercial and got mainstream radio and TV exposure more. Fairytale of New York with Kirsty Mc Call made the Pogues huge. Rory didnt even release a 45.
LONG LIVE THE KING!!!!
grande Rory
27:33 That couch straight up makes this dude look like a dwarf from Lord of the Rings 😂
I have a dy guitars Rory Gallagher tribute guitar 🎸 I love it
Somehow he never broke big in the U S although everyone thought he was destined in that direction.
I don't think Rory trusted any of it, and being marketed like a pop star, just was not for him. I think in a sense, they tried to do the same thing with Stevie Ray Vaughan,
but he didn't really need a lot of marketing. What is there to market? Both of them step out on the stage and if you cannot see their greatness, go home. And studio
albums rarely capture these type of artists properly, as they are at their best live.
He wouldn't let the record companies dictate him. He didn't give the rights to the songs, release singles or music videos so he didn't get much promotion. He liked what he was doing on the level he was doing it. He still sold 30 million albums with little or no promotion which is great.
1:50 Rory is so good, he makes SRV his drummer
Well done.
Better player and songwriter than Clapton.
No1 still
Excelente ❤
You may remember Jimi Hendrix's reponse when asked how does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world. "I don't know. You may want to ask Rory Gallagher". Irreplaceable geniuses.
Hey, Does anybody know if Rory and Stevie ray Vaughan ever met or collaborated..Ive searched but no results so far...for me they are so aligned. Thanks for any guidance..(musically there brothers)
Mille Gracie ❤️
Anyone knows the very last song at the end of the documentary? Thank you!
Hi, I think it is "Wheels Within Wheels", one of his most beautiful songs 🎼 ua-cam.com/video/vDt6-Y1Stso/v-deo.html
Thank you very much!!
