Gerry was a great bass player and complimented Rory very well. Both Gerry and Rory had incredible energy.Loved Gerry on Bad Penny and Tattoo'd Lady both great songs!
Gerry was a substantial part of the success of Rory. Man, what a rock solid bass lines! Am a bass player myself and hear many bass players not timing right, a bit after the beat. Gerry never did that. Always right on the beat, also in slow songs, which made it sound so incredibly tight. Rory must have had a thorough base from that to go loose on it. The same goes for Ted on his drums, by the way.
I saw them a few times in the early seventies. Gerry McAvoy is the bass player you dream of if you're a guitarist! He's the soldier who holds your back, gives you power and never ever lets you down! What a stroke of luck!
Gerry is up there with the greatest,he complemented Rory perfectly.Absolute monster on the bass. That live version of Shadow Play is savage, shows both of them at the peak of their powers.
Merci beaucoup for this interview. For as great a musician that Rory was, I was always amazed at how much the rhythm section contributed to his success. Gerry was a MONSTER bass player.
@@Moluccan56 It has a lot more to do with you being a teen than it does with the music. Every generation looks back with a longing for their younger days.
@@maplebones I disagree. I stand on my original comment; it is my experience of music over the years and you can bet that nobody will be playing the junk that’s been put out for the last decade or more will be played 50 years into the future. Some of us ARE musical when we are young, and remain so throughout our lives.
@@Moluccan56 The music that influenced people like Rory goes back to the 1920's. Yes, the people who are crazy for Taylor Swift today will be crazy for it until they die. Every generation thinks they invented music.
Gerry... thanks so much for your support on all those tunes! Your bass just kicked ass so much and added so much to Rory's tunes!!! Your energy was such a huge part of the performances I've seen, not to mention the recordings.
Hi Gerry! Thanks for mentioning that special gig at the Ulster Hall, it was January 1st 1972 I was only 12 years old and went with my neighbour who was older than me but a complete Rory and Taste fan. I still have the ticket in my Rory Gallagher scrap book. It was my first gig and you guys made the front page of Melody Maker that week. What an experience it was for me, means a lot that out of all of Gerry’s gigs that he did with Rory he remembered and mentioned that one. 🌌💕🌠🕊🙏🌅Best wishes to you Gerry from the County Antrim coast . Thank you for the music 🌅🌠👌🏻
Gerry always seemed to be in the same zone with Rory when they were stretching it out. This interview reinforces what a great bass player he was to anticipate such spontaneity WITHOUT A SETLIST - amazing!
For my money Gerry McAvoy is one of the great unsung blues-rock bassists from these islands. He had fantastic stage presence and it's impossible to think of Rory without Gerry. Great interview with some intelligent questions. I only wish it had been longer.
Watching Gerry and Rory on stage with their almost telepathic awareness of each other shines and comes across every time as two musicians at the peak of their powers. The drummers came and went, and very good they were too, but Gerry was a monster on the bass and Rory was one of the best guitarists ever. This humble, shy, special man truly was a one off. RIP maestro.
Calling Card, To me, sounded Mono. Or, filtered... Just say'n Gerry, your the Sh*t... Jamm'in every song 120%... Your Will boosted Rory up and away... "Thanks A Million" Gerry
i saw Rory in 1973 i did not know who he was.. he opened up for Deep Purple at the time when they were peaking , Rory and his band were on fire and blew the roof off the place. he left the audience in a frenzy after doing an encore the crowd was standing on their chairs demanding more chanting his name over and over.. as good as Purple were back them he made it difficult for them that night. the next day i went out and bought everything he made and became a fan for decades
Gracias por el video , como seguidor de rory y tambien tuyo estoy muy contento , tengo 65 años y soy fan vuestro desde que empezasteis , el pobre rory nos dejo , pero su musica siempre estara presente en mi vida .
I’d loved to have had a bass player like Gerry when I was a gigging musician back in the 70s-90s. He was/is a bloody powerhouse and just knows what to play and when to play it. Rory and Gerry were the perfect combination, and when Ted joined the band ( a hard hitting drummer like myself) it was just perfection in my eyes…even if it was only for few years.
There's playing with and jelling with, Gerry n Rory were fortunate to jell and reach that magic dynamism...Rory had some great musicians along the way, their live contributions will live on
Went to Band of Friends like two or three years ago. They were awesome, especially Gerry, even though he wasn't too happy with me not being loud or cheerful enough. Come on, give a Frisian a break, Gerry. Loved the show ♥
Waiting for such an interview for a few weeks ! So good to hear and sea Mr McAvoy! Thank you sir for the wonderful solos you played on Bullfrog and all the others, for your enormous sound on the studio recordings which supports so well the thrill given by Rory's voice and guitar! And thank you for having survived to the mad life of musicians in the seventies!!! So much have payed the strong price for having given all their energy and creativity to please themselves but the audiences first among them Rory, Lou who was excellent as none and same for Rod. ♥ Thanks to this channel too
Thanks for everything Gerry! I enjoyed your book so much it very much helped me finally be at peace with Rorys passing. You were so fabulous at making the Boss man sound as big as possible all the time and it is so much fun to watch you at work on stage. I last saw you with Band of Friends at the Dakota in Minneapolis in what must have been one of Teds very last gigs (RIP).It was a great gig and it was so much fun to chat with you after the show and confirm that like Rory you are a really nice, fun, down to earth guy that seemed to honestly enjoy chatting with a thrilled fan. I hope to get a chance to see you onstage again.
Great bass player. Loved his stance with the bass The amount of blues musicians from Belfast in that era was mad The hilarious thing is what Rolling Stone magazine said about him and the drummer with Rory’s first lp. Then the next album he was rightly hailed
Interesting vid. I saw RG in concert twice; once in 1972 and once in 1980. The 1972 gig was at the Pier in Portsmouth (or maybe it was the Guild Hall) anyway, the only amplification Rory had there, was his Vox AC30, which seemed very inadequate, for the venue. The 1980 gig, at the Lewisham Odeon was mesmerising. It was him at his best, I'd say.
Great interview and what a great bass player ……..and Rory what a great guitar player his music and the bands music was really top notch in my eyes and I learnt a lot from Rory like I guess many people have…. the music lives on ….old and new generations always came across from interviews as a very pure to the music kinda guy and would have loved to have met him but being 37 didn’t get the chance but a big inspiration for me and always seemed like a lovely fella
Rory's music truly has a timeless quality that resonates with so many of us, and it's wonderful to see how his music lives on with a whole new generation of musicians and fans. Glad you enjoyed the interview, thanks for watching 👍🤘
Gerry you did some fantastic bass playing in those days being a bass player myself you were the guy I paid most attention to in the band and the tone you achieved with the Fender Precision was legendary as well as your technique and enthusiasm you will always be one of my all time favourites live long and prosper brother
Gerry was/is a Beast, an absolute Bass Beast!! His picks must be made out of Tungsten 😅 Great to hear him here and i hope he has a part in the Cork Gigs 2025 🙏.
Gerry still is a great bass player and carries Rory's music with Band of Friends featuring himself and past drummers Rory used. It features vocals and lead guitar with likes of Davy Knowles.
What a bass player, God bless you Gerry.
I thought you were dead?
@@scuzzytwo7556 rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated 😬
Gallagher, McAvoy, Ted McKenna - a power trio like no other.
r.i.p. "Ted- Rory, got all albums, love these guys,
Rush loved Rory , Rory open for rush , who a better 3 pc band ?
Man i loved Teds drumming on Top Prioty....I think one of the best Sounding Albums Rory has made
Gerry‘s autobiography is highly recommended.
Gerry ist the Beast on Bass❤️

When Band of Friends in Germany : I go to the Concerts ! Thank you Gerry for the Music! Greats from Germany ....the Bullfrog !
such an underrated bass player
The best rock/blues Bass Player! 🙏🎶💚☘️ You have the same vibe and energy as Rory! 🎸🎸
The best pair ever in rock music are Rory and Gerry. So enjoyable to watch Gerry play on stage. Great guy too!
Great bassist and musician. Great guy. Make no mistake that he watched Rory's back. Those Irish boys were tough.
Gerry laid the foundations for Rory's live performances. I liked Gerry's "Band Of Friends" activities and also experienced them live. Honorable!
I saw them a few times in the early seventies. Gerry McAvoy is the bass player you dream of if you're a guitarist! He's the soldier who holds your back, gives you power and never ever lets you down! What a stroke of luck!

Couldn’t put it better myself. Anyone not excited by that are either into cowell pop and or musak.
Amazing back in the day when I went to watch rory gerry mcavoy great bass player xxx
Very underrated, they gelded😮 perfectly great musicians
Rory is my absolute favorite guitar player and Gerry is my favorite bass player.... this is gold 🎸🤘🍻
Gerry is a monster bass player, and the perfect fit for Rory's pure raw energy!
I like it when Gerry mentions that telepathy, music wise, existed between the two of them.
Wow Gerry Mcavoy nobody rocks like Gerry what a player he is Gerry and Rory were brilliant together
Fantastic bass player. Saw him with Rory, 3 times at the Ulster Hall in Belfast back in my youth.
Merci beaucoup for this interview.
For as great a musician that Rory was, I was always amazed at how much the rhythm section contributed to his success. Gerry was a MONSTER bass player.

Awesome interview! Very cool to hear from this legend! Thank you!!
Nostalgic to hear from gerry mcavoy such great bass player
Such a fantastic down to earh guy. I saw him with Rory a couple of time and also with Nine Below Zero
I met Gerry in Barcelona what a great guy... Gerry McAvoy the only bass player that could keep up with Rory
Lovely to hear your joy in the talking of memories with Rory, and great questions, too!

Amazing interview, Gerry is a legend.
Saw you guys blazing away.. one of the best live bands ever. Thanks G.
Great to find this, thanks! Rory and Gerry were a combination never matched!
Glad you enjoyed it
Gerry is modest , I'm a big fan of his bass playing
He was great with nine below zero who were a successful blues band in the 90s and my brother said they were brilliant live.
Saw Rory and Gerry 4 times, great together.
In my opinion the best Bass player ever

The production on Calling Card was lifeless. All the energy was drained out of it. Compare it with the marvellous live feel of Against the Grain
I would love to play with this guy. His energy and presence on the bass is really something else. Always looks like he's having the time of his life
I hope you return to the states for another tour with Davy and Brendan now. We miss you all.
Loved Rory but Gerry's base lines were a big part of the music, awesome.
