    Jim Croce - Operator Lyrics
Operator, oh could you help me place this call
You see the number on the matchbook is old and faded
    She's livin' in l.a.
With my best old ex-friend ray
A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated
Isn't that the way they say it goes
    But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show
    I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
But that's not the way it feels
Operator, oh could you help me place this call
'cause I can't read the number that you just gave me
    There's something in my eye's
You know it happens every time
I think about the love that i thought would save me
Isn't that the way they say it goes
    But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show
    I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
    That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels
Operato,r oh let's forget about this call
There's no one there I really wanted to talk you
    Thank you for your time
Oh you've been so much more than kind
And you can keep the dime
Isn't that the way they say it goes
    But let's forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show
    I've overcome the blow
I've learned to take it well
I only wish my words could just convince myself
    That it just wasn't real
But that's not the way it feels

Died at age 30, after 5 albums, and countless classics. He’d be pushing 80 if he was alive, and I’d still be blown away by all of the songs he made over 75 years...but he got 30.
Show me a 30 year old dude today with as much wisdom, and the ability to express it so beautifully.

his widow wrote a wonderful bio of Jim, it's really great, Jim got ripped off by a bad mgt, deal and he didn't make much money while he was alive, after his death most of his royalties went for legal bills, it was insane and so sad, today he could make and sell his own records on the Internet and avoid the record labels

The guitarist was Maury Muehleisen. Jim was his back up guitarist to begin with but he had the stronger personality so he became the front man. Go and listen closely to the difference in Jim Croce's music before and after Maury. Without Maury, there wouldn't be any Jim Croce.

Possibly the best story ever written in a 3 verse pop song: The back story is beautifully, succinctly told in verse 1. She is gone and the hurt is made deeper by the betrayal of his best friend. His forgiveness is expressed in the first chorus. In verse 2 he displays the profound loss of his true love. The second chorus, more softly sung, shows that he isn't quite sure that he is in fact over her. Verse 3 expresses his closure. It is done, there is no need to speak to her anymore. The even softer performance of the chorus expresses his regret for what will never be again. Unbelievable artistry poetically and musically. I was a teen when he was in his prime and his songs alternately tore my heart out or (with I Got a Name) became my anthem. Love ya still Jim!

Aurelian Tudor Dumitrescu I mean that’s what is great about music is the interpretation could be different to each person. I see it as a man with a broken heart. Someone who was deceived and feels he is over it but is almost trying to convince himself that he’s fine but that hurt is still there. “I only wish my words could just convince myself
That it just wasn't real, but that's not the way it feels”.

What’s funny is that originally Croce started as a backup guitarist to Maury Meulheisen, who was classically trained. Once Croce started writing songs, though, Maury saw the writing on the wall. He was smart enough to recognize and enhance great talent. Just a dynamic duo. Maury truly was an integral part of Jim Crowe’s sound. As much as Garfunkel was to the early Paul Simon.

The musical intimacy between these two people is probably as close as you can achieve in a any relationship.
The way the music is brought down to a low whisper when they sing together is the bread and butter if the piece.
The guitar work fills in all the empty spaces and the descant of the back singer is extremely melodic.
They don’t sit side by side, bc there is a respect on who is lead and who is shadow.

Of course I'm generalising but I sometimes hear music I like in a cafe and when I ask the young person at the counter who it is they'll often reply " Dunno, it's just part of a Spotfy/UA-cam stream.". We used to almost always knpow who we were listening to. Hopefully, the world will one day swing back to singers and songwriters being important again for another generation.

People used to reach out to Operators like they did to Bartenders. I've heard many a person tell me please find the number for me - I need to get in touch with ......etc. Now we have moved on to electronics and people only rarely use operators now if at all. You know, I like to think that Jim Croce is speaking about that relationship along with the relationship he missed.

While I was in the army and drove between Houston and Fort Bliss El Paso my mom always wanted me to let her know my progress on the trips. It was 742 miles between my parents house and Fort Bliss. To ease my mom’s fears I’d stop at a pay phone and call home and ask for my first name and I’d use the town I was calling from as my last name, like Jim San Antonio. I’d tell the operator it was a person to person call. But my mom and I already planned ahead. She would never accept the collect call but she knew what town I was in.
Did you ever get calls like that? If you didn’t I’m sure you have a lot of memorable calls.

The person on the other end of the line would say I’m sorry they’re not here and I would hang up nobody got charged.
