    Thanks for this Dan. You didn't have to make this video but I appreciate you going out of your way to highlight a video that I put a lot of work into and also giving some nice feedback at the same time.
    I do get a bit of a hard time when it comes to aliasing as I am normally quite negative about it but I hope what our videos show is that it's still something to understand in terms of how we use our tools as there is a sonic difference in terms of it being audible and inaudible. Knowing it exists is half the battle and I've found being in more control of it benefits the engineer as tonally you have options you didn't have before.
    I think what's important for many to take from your perspective is that yes, we use our ears. Sometimes it's so inaudible you won't hear it in a mix and it may be subjectively better to have more of it, but you know it's there and you know to listen out for it and when to reduce it. Me and you know the sound of aliasing. I actually made 2 videos oversampling waves plugins which was essentially just removing a lot of the aliasing in the plugins. I could hear the differences in blind tests and for me it was an improvement but even that its still subjective. but it also doesn't mean that there is no difference in removing audible aliasing. It's just another plugin feature that you have control of and it's OK for it to be there but it's still something to evaluate whether it's audible or inaudible as it's then something you can manipulate. It's another bow in your armoury.
    I love that we are sharing more with the community so they can see past all the marketing BS for themselves. The information is there for anyone to take. You don't have to agree with it, you don't have to change anything, but least you know what it is, why it happens, how to test it, what it sounds like and how to control it.
    The rest is up to you. Knowledge is power and the more you test and experiment with it the more clinical your decision making will be.
    I'm still learning and experimenting every day trying to understand the decisions that I need to make in audio so I can hopefully become better at the craft and guys like Dan and Chris from airwindows will help you with that. Yes, sometimes I have to watch Dan like 2 or 3 times to fully understand his knowledge and it doesn't matter how many times I watch Chris.. I take in what I take in haha but I know that further down the line the 'boring' stuff will matter and I'll need that information.
    Thank you Dan for the feedback and as always I take away something to digest 🤓

    Oh Dan. One of my few regrets - I was at your studio at the laundry rooms. I knew little about the black art of mixing at that time but I knew enough to admire your microphone collection and beautiful rack gear. I liked the way you spoke to me and your calm presence and demeanour. I liked the way you used reaper. I admired the way you seemed to relax even my super highly strung girlfriend and musical partner at that time. I was astonished at how beautifully clean and crisp and... lovely you made her shit cheap guitar sound. But I allowed her to utterly hog your time and attention, I let her do take after take and, despite the fact I could clearly see you were doing your studio-don thing of gentle guidance and patience I never said what I was thinking, which was "my turn now, I want my guitar playing in his hands". Because you treat it with respect and care.
    I never recorded a single note with you.
    When I first saw your name pop up on UA-cam I was properly glad, and the videos you make are class and have helped make my ears and attitude better.
    Cheers dude x

Disagreeing with someone and proving them wrong is not the same as devaluing a person. We all have incomplete understanding of something. That doesn't mean we have nothing to contribute. Jeez, what a wholesome and enlightening explanation, I’ve been getting really anxious about aliasing, and thinking that I may have made a mistake investing so much in analog emulations. You helped me get out of my head, and remember that the point is to sound good-not to perfectly model some arbitrary original circuitry. Lead with your ears, not your eyes! Aliasing is just a form of digital distortion, that, like any modulation, can be harnessed for good rather than evil with a little practical know-how. But when it comes to UNWANTED aliasing, it’s really nice to just know that I can always run something through analysis and make changes to my signal chain if aliasing gets out of hand! The fact that a 10k tone reflects a bunch of unwanted harmonics going through certain plugins doesn’t mean the plug-in is useless. I just have to be more careful with it than I might with the analog version, which just wouldn’t alias. But I don’t have to go and buy a pultec. I just have to be more thoughtful about how I use my various emulations, when, and why. Maybe multiple instances of the plug-in at lower levels could create a closer sound without the aliasing coming from pushing one instance much harder. A digital solution to a digital problem. There’s lots to explore here! So as usual, My anxiety has decreased 1000% as a result of watching one of your videos so, THANK YOU DAN! You always seem to know just when to talk about a subject as far as being relevant in the social discourse, and your articulate summarizations of what are clearly years of meditation on these topics, including common practical missteps, and how to avoid them in a clear, non judgmental way never ceases to be just what the doctor ordered! I can only hope to get to a place in my own life where I am even just 10% as effective a speaker or teacher as Dan Worall!

    Hi Dan, what's wrong with Fabfilter Q3 Gain compensation?! Example: (I use SF for a faster test) Create a new file with stereo pink noise of about 30 seconds. Add pro Q3. Add one Eq (Mid) BandPass 48db, 450Hz, Q: 3.000. Be careful when enabling [A] gain compensation! What happen? The questions is: 1) Does gain compensation work on every stereo material contains stereo mid side effects? Should we rethink about gain compensation use LUFS instead of Peak or RMS to prevent tricking our brain anyway? Thank you very much!

    • @DanWorrall
      @DanWorrall  2 роки тому +2

      Yes I agree that's a bit odd. But I think it's because a bandpass filter means massive attenuation for most of the spectrum, and it's trying to compensate for that. Basically the auto gain feature is intended to work with typical bell and shelf type settings, and kind of falls apart with bandpass filters.

    • @harryolive1853
      @harryolive1853 2 роки тому +3

      @@DanWorrallthen Then it's much more curious what fab is measuring. It seems not the sum of the output. From my technically experience it's more a unfinished and lite buggy gain compensation, because it does not gain compensate in this case. Further, it doesn't matter using a high and low pass filter instead of a band pass in mid side. I prefer a ~5 seconds LUFS output computation, instead of what they are currently measure. My thoughts about.

    Hey Dan. An interesting and great video. Especially your final thoughts here as those are exactly my thoughts too and I'm glad you point out how important is is to listen and not judge quality by curves alone...what seems to be a common thing nowadays. Or at least seem to manipulate some people in their actual listening perception. A plugin with no or only few aliasing artifacts, but mediocre audio quality will soundwise always loose comparison against an excellent sounding plugin, no matter how much that one aliases. Aliasing can indeed be a good sounding side effect adding character.
    Nice to hear you and Paul have no beef and both of you are reacting calm and cool. Keep it up, that's a great constructive way to go and many can learn something about that process. Cheers

    I was so happy that at the end of this video you pointed out how aliasing can be good. In one of my mixes, the top end of the toms was aliasing believe it or not and I actually really liked that the plastic drum head aliased frequencies were not harmonically related because it made your ears ever so slightly want to pay attention to the toms more when they were sprinkling across the stereo field from left to right. So I agree completely with this video.

    Many of the videos you make give great insight into the technical side of production and mixing, often this also results in me changing my view on things and/or trying new techniques and thought processes.
    Mentioning Soundtoys Decapitator and how you still use it despite the aliasing is one of those things that make me mentally reevaluate the plugins I ditched in the process of sorting through and finding the tools I want to use.
    Especially the two arguments that (1) a sound won't usually get distorted, but rather subtly saturated, and (2) that a majority of real-world signals have little content near the top of the audible frequency range that might alias are good advice to not worry about aliasing too much.
    At moderate input gain settings, I probably couldn't tell if audio contains aliasing artifacts or not. If I can't hear harmonics reflecting then, it shouldn't be an issue to worry about in the grand scheme of things -> "If it sounds good, it is good".
    Still, I am a proponent of all "analog-style" plugins including (optional) oversampling for those who want to get as close as possible to the sound of hardware, albeit simply for the placebo effect in audible terms. Mainly it's the knowledge of the sound being saturated as faithfully as possible compared to hardware XYZ. Perhaps that's some type of OCD, I'm not sure.

    I think folks are missing the bigger picture of Paul's videos. His videos are not just about "does this plugin sound good". They are about analog emulations where the claim is the emulation is less digital and sounds just like the hardware. That's a very different topic to "who cares, if it sounds good it is good". Sure. Who cares? But if SSL says it's their Fusion, and it doesn't sound like their Fusion, and Paul shows us the difference via analyzers, then I am happy to see that. After that. He let's us determine the sound offering us blind tests. The tests are not about if the plugin sounds good, it's about if it sounds like the hardware. Second to that, does it sound good and can we find use of it regardless? I think it's worth understanding the specifics of his goal here, and too many seem to be missing that point. Cheers.

    Thanks Dan - I watched your previous video the other day titled 'WTF is a Non-Linearity' and the whole time is was thinking - Is Dan referring to Paul Third? I wasn't sure but highly suspected he was the source of your consternation. I mention it because I've been watching Paul's videos and he got me thinking that I needed to ditch a bunch of my plugins because they induce some degree of aliasing and don't have an oversampling workaround. He made me think I was somehow blowing it. So 1) thanks for mentioning Paul's name so i could clear up that ambiguity and 2) Thanks for also suggesting that 'If it sounds good, regardless if there's aliasing present or not, then it IS good'. I think sometimes i get too caught up in the details and miss seeing the forest from the trees. Perspective can be our friend. And I'm not putting a bad rap on Paul, cause I've learned alot from him too. But his occupation with aliasing, though important to consider, was starting to overshadowing my common sense. And goddamn Decapitator was ALL over that record. I was working with some of the best ears in the business in a million dollar studio and Decapitator was good enough for them, even though it aliases. It wasn’t a compromise in that environment. It just had a sound that worked in that context. I’m a big fan of Paul’s channel. Part of why I love it is because he does invite *subjective* listening tests. He plays multiple signals processed with different plugins in a blind test, and it’s absolutely refreshing because the subjective experience of music is arguably more important than the technical, and that often gets lost. Your point about aliasing reflects this beautifully: aliasing is a technical fault, but it also doesn’t inherently mean that something sounds worse in every scenario just because it aliases. It’s important to be aware of, to know what to look out for technically, but bigger than that is trust your dang ears and train them for critical listening instead of for confirmation bias. Absolutely love your channel and all the videos you do. You balance the technical with the subjective artfully

    After testing out logarithmic vs. linear scaling, I think I've gotten a more tuned ear for the difference and what it *actually* does in a mix.
    Definetly something I can reccomend doing on its own for the sake of clarity between these two instances.
    A logarythmic scale will cause cluttering, while a linear will turn the volume up with less clutter, but can sound odd as you'd expect it to sound different... *I can't quite explain this difference, but it IS different*
    Both of these instances can be used in a mix with good results, but you should think about *why* you're using either or.
    Are you cleaning the vocal? -linear de-essing might help get rid of that
    Are you trying to use compressing as an effect? -logarithmic compressing will do that for you.
    ofc I have not understood all of this, but it's interesting to see and hear the difference after failing 4-6 years of my life to finally understand the difference now.

    Of course, oversampling doesn't just reduce aliasing, it also helps with accurate peak detection. Which is why the ITU-R BS.1770 paper (of LUFS fame) recommends 4x oversampling.

    I'm with you on the perspective. I prefer "clean" eqs. The way I see it: Back in the day an eq also saturated, because there was no way around it. The maximum control I have is when I use each tool exactly for what it was designed to do. EQ does frequency-boost/cut, Compressor does dynamics, Saturator does Harmonics etc.. yes, my compressors also do harmonics, but I'd be happy if they made this optional .. I'd probably just keep the individual the dynamic behaviour.

    • @Erudotic
      @Erudotic 2 роки тому

      You're forgetting that when for instance a compressor ads harmonics it does so in close relation to its movements, whereas of you add harmonics separately oitwill be staric with no relation to what's happening to the sound the compressor.

      @akagerhard 2 роки тому

      @@Erudotic indeed, I didn't think about that while writing the comment. And I DO use compressors that also color (but I use clean EQs), because I prefer their characteristics (dynamically). I thought that would probably be mostly because of their specifics when it comes to dynamics. I honestly have no idea how big that impact you are describing is, but it is possible that I would miss it, even when the rest stays exactly the same and I saturate before or afterwards. However.. the only way to figure out wether I'd prefer the "clean" version of my compressors or not is to have the option to disable it. So I'm still all for that option!

    Hi Dan, thanks for the illuminating video as always! I just had a quick question that I've been wondering about for a while, though it's not directly related to this video. From a mastering/mix bus perspective, I've seen people talk about two types of compression - low ratio compression with an aggressive threshold (glue?) and high ratio, high threshold compression (transient/peaks-focused?). Obviously not every 2-bus or master needs compression, but I find myself just picking one without actually having a reason.
    When you're listening to a mix, what usually prompts you to say "this needs bus compression" and how do you decide which type to go with?

    • @DanWorrall
      @DanWorrall  2 роки тому +1

      Generally speaking, if I want "glue" I'll use a low ratio, and dig down deep into the dynamics, so everything starts to affect everything else a little bit. But if I want more "bounce" or "groove" I might use a higher ratio, and let the most prominent beats drive the gain modulation for everything else.

    Dan, I recently found out about a concerning issue in Ableton Live: when a plugin is set to apply oversampling during export ("offline oversampling"), Ableton will not render the file with OS.
    So when you use lots of "analog style" non-linear effects in realtime and hope that the accumulating aliasing will be removed during the export stage: bad luck!

  • @heavymetalmixer91
    @heavymetalmixer91 2 роки тому

    I used to be a drastic fan of "Oversampling on everything", but after TB Pro Audio Released GSat+ I started checking it's saturation with it's 2 Oversampling values and with no oversampling. In the ends Oversampling matters when Aliasing becomes annoying to the ears, not by just existing (or for a compressor side-chain, as an aliased signal on the side-chain could make the compressor behave erratically).

    i agree that aliasing sometimes sounds cool. but what your ears tell you can also be misleading sometimes. for example if a plugin produces aliasing on a very low volume and you don't hear it you might think that's ok, but if you later randomly decide to compress that sound hard the noisefloor comes up and gives you an unpleasant surprise. that's a moment where critical listening is not good enough anymore to determine wether oversampling is needed or not

    One question in my mind, the volume of the "sine sweep audio" changes the results of the aliasing drastically, how to know what volume is the correct one for analyzing plugins? The same goes for the volume of a sine wave generator, what volume is correct for sine wave generator should be for being qualified for testing measure?

    • @DanWorrall
      @DanWorrall  Рік тому

      I don't think there's a standardized test, or correct level for the input. I usually set it to -18 or -20 dBFS to approximate a real recording, but be aware this will still exaggerate the aliasing in the very high frequencies, compared to most real world signals which tend to roll off quickly above about 10k.

    • @ES60Hz
      @ES60Hz Рік тому

      @@DanWorrall Thanks Dan! It doesn't sound so easy, at the beginning of the project the audio might be -18 but after a few actions in the project the audio might be -10, and as you say yourself each signal has a different frequency range, so it sounds that for a proper test, need to put an EQ with the same frequency range of the signal before the saturation plug-in that you want to test.
