“Air Coryell Has Now Landed In Canton” 😢 absolutely beautiful, you can tell he was a great mind, great dad, great human.
I went to high school with Mindy, met Don five out six times. He came to one wrestling match that I know of. But every time I saw him over the years, I would go up and introduce myself again and you would always say I really enjoyed watching you wrestle. That really meant a lot to a kid that was an average wrestler who should have been much better.

As a long time Raiders fan, congrats to Coach Coryell.
I was a 15 year old watching the Chargers 55 to 21 beating given to the defending SB champion Raiders.
Fouts threw 6 TDs, Winslow cauaght 4 of those out of his 5 total. Chuck Muncie threw the other one ( the 7 th and final TD pass of that game. The game was 28 - 21 at the half. But it was all SD after that.
Near the end of the game the NBC cameras zoomed in on Don Coryell. I think the Chargers had a penalty called. 55 -21 and theres Don with that pissed off scowel he always had. I saw that face and I yelled at him through the television set, " F#@$ You! What the Hell are you so mad about? Your team is the effin one with 55 points!" Yes, I had angry watery eyes, 😂 But you know damn well had he been grinning or laughing, I'd have been upset about that too.
Im at least grateful they didnt do that the previous year in the hard fought 1980 AFCC. Sorry, its in a rival fans dna to get a dig in now and then.
Anyway glad to see DC finally make it. RIP Coach ( I imagine you're smiling now)

@turtle19dad That was hilarious. I am a longtime 49er fan and a student of the west coast offense. But I loved watching those Charger teams of the 80s with that Air coryell passing game.

This took way to long, but in my mind, a great wrong has finally been righted now that Don Coryell has taken his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
It’s a very short list of coaches who had more impact on the game then Don Coryell. Without Don Coryell’s genius and innovation, the NFL wouldn’t be what it is today.
The only coaches I would put ahead of Don Coryell as far as impact on the game is concerned would be Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Paul Brown and Bill Walsh. That is a who’s who of legendary coaches and Coach Coryell has finally joined that elite group in Canton.
Rest easy, Coach Coryell. Your legacy in football will live forever now that you’re finally a member of the Hall of Fame.
God bless ya, Don. You were miles ahead of everyone else.

Finally, Don Coryell is in the Pro-Football Hall of Fame. He revolutionized the game and if it were not for certain ownership decisions affecting the defense, would have been in the Super Bowl. As a Charger fan since 1969, I have seen the great Chargers Head Coaches including Coryell, Sid Gillman before him, Bobby Ross and Marty Schottenheimer. What I remember about the Coryell era is how exciting the games were and how there was always hope going into games. It was a great time to be a Chargers fan! I am hoping more of that comes back with our current team and head coach.

Sid Gilman Los Angeles Chargers head coach 1960 was a big part of the modern pass attack and big part of Don Coryell success and one of many talented coaches that came from the Sid Gilman tree.

The 80s and early 90s Redskins, the 90s Cowboys, the very late 90s/early 2000s Rams all used Air Coryell and won super bowls.

Don Coryell was head coach of the 1960's San Diego State Aztecs 3 unbeaten seasons and 1970's coached The St Louis Cardinals the cardiac cardinals of the nfc east first place teams and san Diego Chargers afc west won the division 1979-19981 and playoff years 1979-1982 and miami epic vs miami Dolphins orange bowl victory overtime 41-38.
Mike Martz the offensive coordinator who eventually would become the head coach of the greatest show on turf St. Louis Rams even admitted the Rams offense that won the Superbowl with Kurt Warner was all copied off Air Coryell.
