    I just wanted to take a minute and say thank you, David. I watch instructional you tube videos when I need to and sometimes people prattle on about unnecessary things and I just felt like you were quick, concise and straight to the point and I really appreciated it! Thank you.

    For those with curious minds - the "I'm not sure what this shutter priority thing does"... When selected it allows you to exceed the Canon max sync shutter speed of 1/250th of a sec.. It's called (ironically) Hi-Speed Shutter sync up to 1/8000 / sec. The other with the >>> tells it to flash at first curtain or last curtain in your camera. Useful to use last curtain for longer exposures all the way up to bulb. Or down to bulb I suppose is more accurate

    I just got the flash and playing with the controls. One really nice feature it has it the ability to auto adjust the flash range when you adjust the focal length on a zoom lens. Ex. I have a 18-55 lens. The flash will drop down to 24mm at the 18mm end of the lens. At the long end 55mm, the flash moves up to 50mm. It will adjust to a few in between settings as well. Very nice durable case that comes with it which has an inside pocket to hold the flash stand too.

    Awesome job dude, very informative and clear. I liked that you acknowledged that you weren't sure about that particular button rather than trying to explain something poorly. Hi David, I did look in all comments here, but regarding the High Speed function in 430EX II (the third button from left to right) is when you'd like to set the shutter speed higher than 1/200. By default the maximum speed is 1/200 even if you setup a higher than that, and the reason is about the how fast the curtain close and open, so 1/200 is the limit, and with speed over that you could expect some black strips in your image. Please, if I told something silly, correct me! Nice tutorial!

  • @MRpeanut222
    @MRpeanut222 12 років тому

    For others who want to know what the last button is that he mentioned. It controls the flashes high speed sync abilities. Usually you can't fire a flash if you're shooting faster than 1/200sec. Pushing the button once will put the flash into high speed sync mode, which means you can shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000sec (so long as you are using it on cam, or via an advanced trigger/cable). Press it twice, and the flash fires just before the second curtain on your shutter shuts.

    The button that you do not know how to use is a flash assist to help your camera focus in low light. The video was a good beginner video but would have been better if that was researched and added at the end as it is a useful feature for some situations.

    The H button is the High Speed Sync. It means you can shoot with higher shutter speeds and the flash will sync with your shutter speed. The reason for this is that with high sutter speeds your shutter can open and close before the flash fires or it fires half way through an exposure. This causes black lines halfway through your image. With the sync on this wont happen.Easy!

    I still keep a 430 exII with a couple Yongnuo 603 transceivers in my bag for when I do landscapes and want some light on my foreground. I wouldn’t advise anyone to buy a new Canon speedlight these days, I would certainly look for a secondhand 430 as a first strobe. They have great functions and boy they can bounce, Ive dropped mine on hard surfaces far too many times. (I’m not taking responsibility for anyone purposely testing this)

  • @elimar48

    Yeah, I made sure it was popped up every time.... I wouldnt think that just pressing the shutter would just work magically! I held the "Flash" button until it switched over to slave mode (you can see channel 1-4 and group a-c), then, while having the onboard flash open on my camera, I would take a picture and look straight into the slaved 430ex II, just to make sure I didnt miss it. And yes, I made sure it was pointing towards the front of the speedlight.

    The "H" with the lightning bolt put the flash at high-speed sync. Which mean you can shoot past your shutter sync speed. So for example you can really darken that sky at shutter speed over 250 and not get the black line. What happens is the flash acts a strobe light but you will lose half power, yet the Naked eye can't see it... Look up on youtube snapfactory high-speed sync
