    I think that the 7D/580 EX II is a great combo. The speedlite offer great power, wireless function (event if limited compare to expensive transmitter), and it is robust. You can set up a 580 with other speedlite and use it as a master. Definitely go with the 580 over the 430 for the power.
    Now I would go with the new 600 EX-RT If you think that you need lot's of speedlite often and have a good budget. The 600 have a buit in wireless transmitter that will work with I think only other 600

  • @angelisone
    @angelisone 12 років тому

    The Canon 600EX-RT can do Master for both, wireless radio or wireless ir.
    But it still has overheating & shutdown like all hotshoe flashes until now...
    ATG Gold MG8k, Metz 76MZ-5 and Quantum Trio rock!
    No overheating & no shutdown.
    Nice videos ;o)

    My first recommendation for the 580 ex is to use 2500-2800 ma rechargeable batteries.
    Most normal batteries put out a steady decline of 1500 ma (or less) 28000 makes sure your flash always keeps up with your shutter speed!
    (Otherwise you'll get frequent black shots)

    I am not sure if the Canon 7d is compatible with other brands. I guess Canon want you to buy their gear over the competitor. A good alternate option is to buy a transceiver. The Cactus V5 is a good option. Relatively cheap and works with a wide range of camera and flashs. I made a video if you want to check it out.

    Thanks for this video, a simple question I have . Working with a EOS 70D, how can I trigger the 580EXII as a slave from the internal flash of the camera. I cannot find the Flash menue you are showing on your body in Menu 1 of the EOS 70D - is this possible. How can I trigger the 580EX flash to have some light from another direction than the direction I am shooting with my camera?

      I have used this flash on a series of Canon cameras through the years. I use it now with a trigger as I moved to a Sony camera system. It was such a good investment as it is still working great. You can also go for Godox speedlite as they are affordable and reliable.

    When you are shooting with a flash, which settings do you use in your camera? S.S, ISO, Aperture? My canon shows always negative exposure in the meter. Why is this?

    • @manuelmartelphotography
      @manuelmartelphotography  4 роки тому

      Hi first I want to apologize for the late response. I might be asking the obvious but have you looked at the exposure compensation meter for the camera and for the flash? Might be your issue for the negative meter. I always use Manual mode and my settings varies depending on what I want to shoot. I use slow ss and mid range aperture when shooting real estate, 1/250-1 sec and f/8-11. I’ll shoot ss 1/125-1/250 wide open aperture and low ISO for portraits and fast ss 1/1000-1/2000 higher iso 400 and will adjust aperture to match a proper exposure if I shoot any fast motion subject outside. Hopefully this help.

    • @CristinaRossi
      @CristinaRossi 10 років тому +1

      You have probably sorted this by now but just in case, it could be that you have the little white catclight card slightly out, make sure it is all the way in and it should stop blinking.

    • @photoyamamoto
      @photoyamamoto 10 років тому

      you have the head of the flash pointing down below 90 degrees. Thats what the info panel is flashing.

    • @gopalgovender1156
      @gopalgovender1156 7 років тому

      If the flash head is tilted out of normal position like when you bouncing the light, that is when the back panel flashes. It is normal.

    I need some help. I am trying to use a canon 580exii on a sony nex 7 with the proper shoe adapter. Using the ETTL, the TTL, and the EM modes I get washed out photos. I can only get good photos in 100% Manual mode. It doesn't matter what I set the flashes configuration variable 5 to. So, does this mean the fanciet functions on the canon580 just don't work with the sony nex 7?

    • @manuelmartelphotography
      @manuelmartelphotography  5 років тому

      Hi Peter. I am not familiar with that combo. My guess is the washout might be cause because of the flash exposure compensation. It is possible that it is in a positive value either on your camera or on the flash. I have a Godox flash with a Sony a7III and I can have +2 on my camera and 0 on my flash. So I would have washout images even if my flash shows 0. Let me know if it makes sense or not.

    Hi Manuel, can you please explain how to reset the Canon Speedlite 580EX, and the Canon Speedlite 580EX II to factory settings. Thank you in advance.

    • @manuelmartelphotography
      @manuelmartelphotography  7 років тому

      +gopal govender Hi, the easiest way to reset the speedlite is to go in the menu on your camera with the speedlite on it. Make sure that you are in any mode other than fully automatic. Then you should find the flash control option (it's in my first option menu on my 7d). After choose the Clear external flash c.Fn setting. It should clear all of the settings and bring the speedlite back to square one.

    OK, I need some real help with this flash by you geniuses out there Try not to laugh too hard over my questions. I am only a Nuclear Engineer of 34 years. I am shooting an Olympus OM10 in manual mode and it doesn't have anything fancy on this prehistoric film camera. So I use the mode button and and set the display to "M" but there is an "E" above it on the left side. Is it supposed to be there and what does the "E" mean and do? Second question: in the mode display I see "1/4". I do not know what this nomenclature even means. Obviously it is not a "quarter of an inch" but what the hell does it mean? I have used simpler flashes where you just pick one of three ranges on the front of the flash and set the aperture and shutter speed (by the way do I use 1/30 seconds or 1/60 seconds)? If I use an external power source I did eventually find where you set one of the variables to tell it that. By the way can someone recommend a good external power source for this flash that doesn't cost more than the flash itself? I await with baited breath your answers as this flash gives my life meaning and substance.

    • @manuelmartelphotography
      @manuelmartelphotography  5 років тому

      Hi Peter, The 1/4 refers to the power of the flash, in this case it would be a quarter of the power. The Power guide is 190' or 58 meters (at 105mm) that's how far it will power at 1/1 or maximum power. As far as external power source for the flash, I always used 3 sets of rechargeable batteries. It is a bit more economical and portable than a battery pack. The 580EX II is a Canon flash. So my guess is when you put the flash on your Olympus OM10 there is a lack of communication between the two and that's the reason there is a E above the M in Manual Mode. I don't have the flash with me at the moment as I am away on a trip for another month. I can take a look when I come back home to give you a better answer.

      @@manuelmartelphotography okey what is your opinion for first time flash using experience. A brand new third party flash, like a yongnuo yn685 ? or second hand but in good condition 580ex ii ?

    • @manuelmartelphotography
      @manuelmartelphotography  5 років тому

      Well it's a good question. I personally switch to Sony from Canon. I bought a Godox third party flash because it was cheaper and almost as good as the Sony one. I am very pleased with it and I also purchase a trigger and Canon receiver so I can still use my 580 EXII because it is a fantastic flash. So I guess what I am trying to say is you wont get disappointed with a second hand 580EXII if it is in good condition. The third party brand are also good and way cheaper if you want to build a kit.

    • @ozdemirmurat
      @ozdemirmurat 5 років тому

      @@manuelmartelphotography You dont say exactly specific thing like me :) good options both of them. Im not sure about 580exii usability. For example if ı have a godox tt685c with xt1 trigger , ı can add second tt685 without any extra receiver.Also I can manage the flash from trigger menu. But if ı wanna use 580exii with same budget,ı can find only basic trigger because ı have to buy kit. and if ı wanna add more flash ı have to buy another trigger. Because optical slave mode is not regular in daylight. I started to thinking about canon gears sell strategy. Because they are not just one option nowadays for buying a flash. I think differences are not too big between two flashes about quality.
