- The 2018-2020 Volvo XC40, for which the company has already received over 13,000 orders, is Volvo Cars’ first ever small premium SUV. The first customers can expect to take delivery of their new XC40 early next year.
Preparations for the production start of the XC40 in Ghent have been ongoing for a long time. Considerable investments in recent years have transformed the Ghent plant into a global export hub for CMA-based cars, including an 8,000 square metre addition to the body shop.
A total of 363 new robots have been installed, including one which has been nicknamed “the Beast” by Ghent employees. This large robot, unique within Volvo Cars’ global manufacturing system, is used to lift lower car bodies to a conveyor belt close to the ceiling of the plant.

People need to understand that 1. It’s chaotic EVERY time any car company starts to produce a new car. Engineers, managers, quality people and so on wants to have a look and explain to the assemblers how to build. 2. This is an entirely new platform for the Gent factory. This is the first step away feom the EuCD platform to CMA. God, if people would have seen the first Xc90 in Torslanda. THAT was chaos.
Ja kob I remember when i first saw the xc40 prototype at my moms work. She was signing it to make sure they have build it correct.

this is just the start of the production, thats why you can see a lot of people. take it easy haters, after 1 months its gonna be a normal production :)
I love how some people on here, who have absolutely no idea of how a car is made, can comment on the production of a car.
I'm sure Mercedes or Audi are the epitome of German Efficiency. The reality is, they're all very similar.
Trying to do the work while the car is moving seems a bit annoying.

I am a bit surprised that Ghent seems to have so little in the way of rolling floors. I have worked on an assembly line without rolling floor and it was workable, but we built 52 cars *a day* so the skids moved pretty slowly. Cars turned out great, I had a cycle time of 14 minutes at some stations, but it of course wasn't economically feasible.
I'm guessing this is trial production run. It looks like there are more supervisors and engineers than actual line workers. Plus too many people not mutilation free working around the vehicle. I'm amazed they are allowed to wear shorts and no PPE.

This must have been the very first XC 40 because it was really unorganized assembly line. It was mooving too fast for most and the paint had lot's of orange peel. I think I would wait a bit.

Will probably be a excellent car but marred by one of the worst sat nav on the market, just like all the other new Volvos.

Kan Gill its preproduction, so after few weeks this will be much more organize i have friend working in car factory and he tells me its same in his job just like this, its not production its preproduction workrs dont know jet how car need to be built, its amazing that volvo show this to us

Get ready to service every month, this one is fresh in the game like new XC90 that you can see most of them in the service... true story sold my Volvo S60 R-design D4, because of too many mechanic problems from engine, gearbox and also crunch problems in the console, never again. Volvo killed my brand image. Stop being a less Premium more Chinese. Service foreman told me that first production lines generally suffer problems, so wait and buy the 2nd generation if you dont believe me research the volvo technical journals.

I have a friend working at Volvo Ghent and he said it's all super unorganized because it's an all new design, platform... They can't 100% '' copy '' from how they build the other models

@@Tipko This is from Ghent. Torlanda isn't equipped to build CMA cars, they only build SPA cars. Ghent and Liqiau are the only plants for CMA manufacturing.

Something about this makes me happy. I think it's that I like seeing humans come together to learn and work as a team to make a complex machine, and a great vehicle. I like seeing human achievement.

Glad I'm not seeing Chinese workers. I make it a habit to avoid Chinese products. I'm a Volvo lover so I may purchase under Chinese ownership, just not Chinese built.

I’ve visited several production lines from Audi, Mercedes, Porsche or VW and none of them is this unproductive and makes the car so dirty while assembling it... and this is extremely chaotic - no wonder volvos are expensive

This is Gent, Belgium. the plant exsists for decades. It takes time to let production run flawless, so this is just finetuning i suppose.
