  • When did refined high performance shortboards become so user friendly for the average surfer, in average waves?
    The Monsta 8 by JS Industries is a high performance shortboard, that performs well in a variety of conditions, for a variety of surfers from intermediate ability through to very experienced surfers.
    My JS Industries Monsta 8 was - 6’0 x 19 1/8 x 2 7/16 @ 29.5L
    I have been riding the Monsta 8 for a few months now, but originally held off from riding it waiting for some pumping waves as I thought that is what it would really want, living in Sydney, pumping waves never came so I took it out in some fun 3-4ft junky wedges, and the Monsta 8 loved it! The Monsta 8 was a lot more forgiving than I thought it would be upon first glance, it’s quite refined through the nose and with a medium rail that has a little bit of bite, but still helps you glide through turns without grabbing or feeling like it is restrictive of your ability or the conditions. The foam seems to be well distributed through the chest and through the center of the board to keep paddling into waves quite easy, and keeps you moving across flat sections with ease.
    The Monsta 8 really lets you open up to progress your surfing, and with a little bit more flip in the rocker towards the nose, keeps it from catching in steeper or suckier conditions.
    I surfed the Monsta 8 in a variety of conditions from waist high onshore junky waves, through to 5-6ft (well overhead) heavy beachbreak barrels - and the Monsta 8 seemed to perform everywhere I took it! You can also get the Monsta 8 in the JS Hyfi technology which I think would give the board more of a lively feel in the smaller junkier stuff, which would be pretty cool to check out!
    I rode the Monsta 8 with the Futures Fins Jack Freestone Generation Series fin, Check them out at - www.futuresfins.com.au/jack-fr...
    The Freestone Generation fin is a large size Speed Generating fin with a Ride Number of 8.0. Jack rides this fin when the conditions are small and he needs a little more zing. Generating speed is the key to new life in small surf. The latest in speed generating fins, the Gen Series features a V2 foil for fluidity and a unique blend of uni-directional carbon and fiberglass for a more stable flex pattern.
    From the JS website - www.jsindustries.com/monsta-8-...
    This is our best high performance all-rounder yet, improved and fine-tuned by the entire Traktor Team. 8 years after the original Monsta built its reputation as a go-to for surfers around the world, from WSL podiums to everyday sessions and annual Indo trips, the Monsta 8 is the result of nearly a decade’s worth of R&D.
    With so many epic but contrasting styles throughout the Traktor Team, JS spent months gathering input from absolutely everyone. It had to cater for some of the best pure rail games in the world in Parko and Ace, the aerial freak shows of Mikey, Ryan & Dusty, and the crazy versatility of Julian and Owen. There’s a little bit of everyone in the Monsta 8, with it becoming the new gold standard under the entire team’s feet. From Owen starting his comeback at Snapper on one of our key M8 prototypes, to JS and Joel constantly testing & improving on the latest changes together, we couldn’t be happier with the results.
    First, the rocker has been tweaked to have slightly more curve in both the nose and tail. The last two inches of nose rocker have been lifted to prevent catching in quality waves, while the adjustments to the tail curve provide extra release. Concaves have been deepened through the fins creating more speed and removing drag, while maintaining maximum control. The outline also has a more pronounced hip, allowing for quicker, more responsive direction changes. The Monsta 8 prompts intuitive, fast and flowing surfing, and has an outline to match.
    We’ve refined the Monsta 8 to the point where everyone from longtime weekend warriors to world champs are calling it their favourite performance driven all-rounder ever. And now, it’s ready for everyone else to ride and enjoy in a huge range of waves around the globe. The best always find a way to get better.

    Man your reviews are great. You've ridden both the CI Fever and the Monsta 8.
    I have an option of purchasing both the CI Fever and the Monsta 6 (which I'm just gonna assume is close enough to the 8).
    Which do you prefer? I'm currently riding a 6ft 31.9L Monstabox in PU and I'm loving it (I'm 185cm, 80kg). 2-4ft waves are where the Monstabox lives.
    At 3-5ft I'm leaning towards a HPSB - maybe the 6ft2 Monsta 6 at 30.2L?

      Nicholas Chang hey!
      Sizing it such a personal thing, so hard to guide... with the Monsta 6 or 8, aim for you stock normal volume you’re comfortable riding in a HPSB, you don’t need to add or remove foam.
      Also, I rode a Monstabox many years ago, and rode it in the same volume as my shortboards. So if you’re riding 31.9L in that and you’re comfortable with it, you might not want to go down too much...

    Hi Craig. I love your reviews! So many details for an average guy like me!
    I would like know your thoughs...
    I have an OG Flyer for every day surf. When it's pumping, take my rookie 15. But think that it's preety much long arcs and bit slower too.
    I'm between Pyzel Shadow, fever or monsta 8 as my high performances shortboard for pumping beach breaks. Sometimes kind mushy but wel overdhead
    Thank you

      Hey! Sorry, i didn't see your comment till now...
      I haven't ridden the Shadow, but I've had a great time on the Fever and the Monsta 8. Out of the two, the Monsta 8 sits just above the Fever in performance, and due to this is just a little less user friendly than the Fever!

    Hi Craig!!!! greetings!!!
    Great great review on the board and fins, thanks a lot.
    What are your thoughts on the same model but round tail? Which one you like better? In general, will round tail work well on a 6'0 model?
    Thanks again

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  6 років тому

      Hey! I think a round tail would be pretty epic! Especially if the rail line is a little longer. I have just re-ordered this in a 5'11 and a little wider/thicker, but a 6'0 round tail might be good too!

      Thank you so much. Enjoy the new 5'11. I will let you know how it goes with the round tail once I get it.

    Thanks for your reviews! I'm debating between a Monsta 8 in a round tail or the Sabotaj for waves in the 5-8 ft range. How would you say these compare? I'm more interested in the one that has more drive but still performs.

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  5 років тому

      Hey mate! Both would be epic if you are specifically surfing solid waves in the 5-8ft range, and I'd say this is when the Sabotaj would be at home and would be the best board, especially if the waves are steep and barreling! But the Monsta 8 would still go pretty well even if it is a little smaller and fuller, and you still want to surf on the board!

    Hey Craig great review. How did the monsta 8 compare to the air 17. Did they feel much different?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  6 років тому

      Hey! Yeah, the Monsta 8 is a little finer through the nose and rails, and subsequently a little knifier!

    Hey Craig
    Looking at ordering this board and l noticed on another channel you commented you ordered a custom monsta8 little shorter n wider and goes better for u? Keen to know the dims of your custom?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  5 років тому

      Trevor Hocking hey! It is 5’11 x 19 1/8 x 2 1/2 @ 30.1L - I’m 5’10 tall so this feels a little better with the more compact volume and shorter rail line. The 6’0 in the review went good, the 5’11 feels even better, especially when the waves aren’t great! 🤙

    What shortboard do you think os more forgiving, the Monsta 8 or the Fever ?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  6 років тому +1

      Martin Jahn hey! Both epic boards and it’d be pretty hard to pick between the two, but if you’re looking for something forgiving cause you’re regularly surfing lesser quality waves, I’d probably go the Fever out of those two. But when the waves are better, I think the Monsta 8 would out perform the Fever. Hope that helps!

    sick vid, great surfing- that last turn was mental!!
    when you added to the width , did you go 1/8 "fuller" all around (nose/miid/tail) or just +1/8 to the stock dims?

    Rocker looks steep! Hows the paddle?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  6 років тому +2

      Bermcannon Media hey! The entry rocker is quite gentle, so it paddles really well, it’s not until you’re right into the nose that the rocker really kicks, and that’s not going to effect paddling, but will help you in steeper suckier sections!

    Could you possibly review some JR Surfboards? That's Wade Carmichael's sponsor and he has been doing well on the tour.
    Tbh I'm asking that becouse JR Surfboards is one of the the few international brands that sells where I live, but it's still probably a good call to give them a try.
