From a Chinese culinary point of view, if you can’t cook rice properly, you can’t make anything. Saying “You can’t make rice” is like saying “You don’t know how to boil water.”
I'm really surprised that she knows what certain foods look like. If I brought home a burrito and showed it to my mom, my mom would believe it's a dirty diaper.
Grandmafina is too cute! All of that food looks delicious! My dad’s parents are from southern Italy. Calabria to be exact. My mom’s mother was originally from El Paso, Texas. My grandmother was part Lebanese and part Mexican. My mom’s father was from the Mexican state, Guanajuato.
Thank you for posting this! GREAT VIDEO! I'm an Anglo-American, with no Asian roots. I'm here for the food, and the culture! I love Peking Duck, Potstickers, Shrimp Dumplings, Hot & Sour Soup, & Jin Jiang Rou si (aka Moo Shu Pork), and I want to try the rest of the dishes, and give my wok a workout! - I would like to have a tour of Grandmafina's home! I love to see how others decorate their living spaces. I see posters of "Gone With The Wind" & "Casablanca" in the background. :) - The BEST thing we can do, is to SPEND TIME WITH & LISTEN TO our elders, and attempt to LEARN from them, especially in the CULTURE department. They've learned a lot from life, and if they really love and care about you, they will give you tips about their life, and things that they had to figure out the hard way, so you don't have to. This is their chance to pass down their knowledge and experience...don't let them down!
the name Peking is derived from Cantonese pronounciation of the City. When the British first arrived in China, they encountered Cantonese merchants in GuangDong/GuangZhou. Thus the British name of city stuck, until recently.
Learn their language! Doesn't matter where you are from. Here in Singapore, my grandparents are Hokkien, and we lived with my paternal grandma who watched us while both parents worked. I grew up speaking Hokkien (probably the most common dialect in), and English concurrently, then had to learn Mandarin when I went to school, so my Mandarin sucks. Anyway, I'm more comfortable in Hokkien, and when I do speak it (still fairly badly) to older aunties in the market, or when I buy lunch or whatever, they're so impressed because "young people don't know how to speak dialect anymore". But you know what? It's really sad because I'm not young. I'm 38. And already in my generation, so few people can speak the language. And so many grandparent- grandchild relationships just never happened because of the language barrier. So learn their language, guys! It touches their heart more than you'll ever realise
OMG I love Grandma, she is hilarious. And the food looked so awesome, I really enjoyed watching it seeing that I currently live in China but I never got a run down of what actually I was eating (history or where it came from) or being exposed to eating in the provinces that I visit etc. It was very educational :)
I’m born in Qingdao Shandong ,raised in Canada, my grandma roots are from Dongbei China , and grandma is part Manchurian Chinese, grandpa is born and raised in Qingdao, so pretty much I’ve been raised on Tsingtao beers my whole life with amazing food. Before the communist party ruled China and took everyone’s money away like a little bitch, grandma use live in a very wealthy and had a lot of western influence in her life, imagine a Chinese grandma making Minestrone Soup, beef braised in red wine, and PIZZA! She would be extremely open to other cuisines and like them, grandma loved hot dogs, pizza and she loved Italian food. My Grandma didn’t understand much English but she would watch food channel with me as a kid. R.I.P Grandma miss you
for the record at the time your grandma was raised there's no 'dongbei' exist on surface of the earth, there was Manchuria aka Manchukuo where western and japanese culture flourished the wealthy country. All my manchurian relatives are extremely open to foreigner stuff because we've been through a whole lotta different history than the the Chinese did.
shout out to grammafina! ShanDong represent! I'm so happy that you guys repped zha jiang mien. im tired of arguing with ppl that it is a OG CHINESE (shan dong) dish and not korean. our fam makes it a lil diff tho but still reppppp 👍
My grandparents were all from Texas (so am I). When they were alive, I spent a lot of time listening to them, and I learned a ton of fascinating information about how things used to be. I never got bored with them.
2:50 a little more tip for the Tu Dou Si: after shredding the potatoes into strips, you need to soak them in water and water away the starch. That gives it the crispy texture.
I went to Beijing in 2011. I did a lot of touristy things--Ming Tombs, walked up the last 500 meters of the Great Wall (Wow! What an unbelievable view from the highest point.), visited a place that made silk, a place that carved jade (bought a small Napa cabbage as a souvenir), a place that grew freshwater pearls. I also took a cooking lesson and made the potatoes that you had in the video. I had a Chinese friend who made that for a group of friends back when I was in college. The lesson also taught us how to make pickles, a stir fry with pork and finely chopped ginger and spring onions with garlic bolts. Super food. And, of course, we had Beijing duck with one of the groups from the tour. There was a street near that hotel that had different kinds of shops and restaurants I had Beijing noodles there. It was something I wanted to do since I was a teenager and I hope I can go back again.
Is Grandmafina willing to share her recipes? They looked very appetizing! I'm half (Beijing)Chinese and half (Tokyo)Japanese, born in LA. My husband is German-Irish. Luckily, he loves Asian cooking. LOVE your videos Fung Bros.
Great show. As a Xinjiang local, I'd like to clarify that we speak different languages, like Uyghur, Kazakh, Uzbek, Kyrghyz and etc. They are not dialects of Chinese.

Korean-American, I have Korean paternal and Filipino maternal grandparents in Hawaii and Washington who speak English really well. It depends when they immigrated over, for me it was the 1950s, so they had the time to learn and pick up English in 70+ years.
My japanese grandparents have been here since 1954 and still can barely string a sentence together I LOVE THEM SM THEY ARE SO CUTE but seriously go grandmafina!!
Thank you for sharing this video, I loved it. My grandparents were from Mexico, we are native American from Michoacan Mexico. My favorite dish is the hot and sour soup. Thanks for educating us on your culture and wonderful food.❤️🔥😍☮️😃

Great video, AWKWAFINA is seriously the hottest woman you've had on these videos. Much better than the wannabe models from the other videos. AWKWAFINA seems like a fun laid back person to hang out with.
this is super cool cause ive eaten most of these and no one ever talks about these kinds of dishes! for example shredded potatoes and the tomato and egg dish... I eat them all the time at home but none of my friends have heard of it, so thanks fung bros for this vid!

So this is the famous Awkwafina's Nai Nai that got up 5 minutes before the end of The Farewell to start cooking dinner 😄

Last time I was this early, Pakistan and Bangladesh were still a part of India.

*DESIS REPRESNT!!*
Awkwafina is the most funniest guest ever. Hope you will bring her more often during food episodes. Her humor is relatable and she light things up
I really enjoyed watching this episode! Awkwafina and her grandma have such a close relationship
This was definitely entertaining, and that was awesome that you both got to eat with Awkwafina! She seems like such a cool person.
I am from Beijing and I am so proud being a beijingner. This video is dope!
I am also from a Beijing family. When Grandmafina said mandarin is just like my own grandma, same accent, same tone! Miss her! Love Grandmas!

Awkwafina is my new crush and her grandmother so cute.
"poor people eat this", 穷人乐 is the genuine Beijing slang for it.

Do you speak JAPANESE AND CHINESE?
I understand Japanese. My Chinese language skills SUCK. But I can sure eat from both rice cookers!
I really like how Awkwafina interact with her grandma and vice versa.
What a lovely grandma❤️
Love you all. That Peking duck looked pretty perfect to me. And the potstickers!😋
Need more Grandmafina time.
You guys need to do more episodes like this where the dishes are prepared and cooked by people from the exclusive regions
Her grandma is awesome :)
Awkwafina. Golden Globes Best Actress award winner. Her grandmother must be so proud of her.
Great show. As a Xinjiang local, I'd like to clarify that we speak different languages, like Uyghur, Kazakh, Uzbek, Kyrghyz and etc. They are not dialects of Chinese.
Also Xinjiang people look like middle eastern people because Xinjiang people are middle eastern people (race-wise)! They are not "Chinese people (race-wise) look like middle eastern people".... OMG history lessons are needed for Awkwafina...
I think she confusing the Hui people with Xinjiang.
Preach!!!!!! Clear all this communist misinformation
is Ughhur similr to Uzbek?
is Uyghur similar to Uzbek?
I am a late Awkwafina and Fung Bros fan. I appreciate this episode so much.
Lol I have never seen an Asian grandma that speaks fluent English. Typically you'd see an Asian grandma just speak their foreign language.
I think a lot of Japanese and Chinese grandparents speak fluent English. Other types of Asians, not so much
Awkwafina also seems as white washed as it gets... so Grandma probably came to the states earlier on...
That'a cos you Hmong. Chinese ppl been in America since the early 1800s.
UtotheJ why is she whitewashed? You're ignorant as fuckkk
Korean-American, I have Korean paternal and Filipino maternal grandparents in Hawaii and Washington who speak English really well. It depends when they immigrated over, for me it was the 1950s, so they had the time to learn and pick up English in 70+ years.

Grandma Fina is so cool! 💓💓
Love this episode, especially with Awkafina and her grandma...
GRANDMAFINA IS SO CUTE
Grandmafina is soooo cool and nice. I am waiting for the day that Awkwafina will host the Oscar.
One thing grandma said is true ... Chinese moves too fast and the young people are just too rich
especially their driving skills XD. the stereotype.......
No one likes a dreaded fuerdai.
Is Fung bro from southern part of Chinese or north?
Awww... sweet grandma. cooking so many things for granddaughter and her friends
haha grandma is cool. Awkwafina knows to use bad words in Cantonese
Thank you for sharing this video, I loved it. My grandparents were from Mexico, we are native American from Michoacan Mexico. My favorite dish is the hot and sour soup. Thanks for educating us on your culture and wonderful food.❤️🔥😍☮️😃
The food looks good. I wish I was there.
She was a doll!! Loves this episode - all the food looked great, hard to decide.

The brutal honesty of GrandmaFina hits the heart as another ABC.
Great video, AWKWAFINA is seriously the hottest woman you've had on these videos. Much better than the wannabe models from the other videos. AWKWAFINA seems like a fun laid back person to hang out with.

“poor people eat it” I’m fucking cackling 😭😂
Who in here has the same white bowl with green design?
i have a similar looking one, i think.
I had that bowl, I think I broke it though
white bowl with blue designs but never green
Love Awkwafina's Cantonese! Very authentic on the 'what's the fxxk'.
