  • Doing our own research and reading is very important so we don't fall into the trap of "doing what they do" so we can all pursue a more accurate depiction and better practices as we pursue living history. Here are three of my favorite books that I keep going back to!
    - The Journal of Nicholas Cresswell
    - The Hunters of Kentucky, by Ted Belue
    - Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart

One good primary source is "Forty-Four Years in the Life of a Hunter" by Meshack Browning. He lived from 1781 to 1859, and spent most of his life in the far backwoods of Maryland. The Indian wars in that part of the country were over by then, but the area was still a vast wilderness. He lived a life that would have been completely familiar to Boone or Crockett, wearing the same type of clothes and hunting with flintlock rifles even after percussion was invented. He estimates that in the course of his life he killed between 1800 and 2000 deer, 300 to 400 bears and about 50 "panthers" (mountain lions). As you can imagine, this involved quite a few adventures, which take up most of the book. I don't know if it's still in print right now, but if not, you can probably find a copy on ABE books. Highly recommended.

I've not heard of that one! Sounds like a fantastic resource!

Musashi;s "Book Of Five Rings" gives some insights into the Warrior's Mindset, that I'm sure were represented on the Colonial American Frontier. The other choices are good too! Allen Eckert's series, "The Winning Of America" is a excellent choice for the history of the times. It starts out with "Wilderness Empire" ... The French & Indian War and wraps up with the Black Hawk War.

Awesome video drake! Do you think you could make a video on field cleaning your flintlock? Lots of videos on doing it at home but the longhunters and frontiersman didn’t have endless patches and ballistol haha

Definitely! That topic is on my short list of video ideas. Probably do it some time in the early fall.

Have you ever heard of the Frontiersman Camping Fellowship, within the Royal Rangers program in the Assembly of God church?

Hey Drake, have you ever made salt pork? Very easy to make and keeps for about 2 weeks without refrigeration. Paired with some parched corn or corn meal you have a very tasty and versatile historically accurate way to make food.

I have not. I have some friends that have done salt pork and salt beef though and it's turned out very well. Most of what I've done is jerked meat, parched corn (might do a big video on that topic someday), ash cakes, or corn meal gruel (yum).

Good to see you back. Hope to keep seeing 18th century videos like this. Is your persona very late 18th century? The 1760s is where I landed
