    You have a great start their my friend!
    I have been gunsmithing since 2002 and it's always a learning and development process to come up with ways to improve your set up. I could sure come up with a lot of suggestions for you based on this video. First suggestion would put your vice all the way to the edge of your bench. You limit your abilities with it back like that. I made the same mistakes twice... I realy don't like where mine is now because I don't have enough swing without obstructions. My plan is to build out from the corner of my bench but it needs to be rock solid. I have other vices in my shop too but i like them all to be fully functional. As for soft jaws take scrap plywood, cut to the width of your jaws then cut out a channel to let your pieces set even with the top of the Jaws. I have a wood set, wood with leather glued on and then a set with cork. I also machined a plastic set for grabbing barrels and bought a rubber set. I use straight wood or the rubberized set from brownells the most.
    I only clean barrels with Dewy one piece rods to protect the muzzle and chamber. I always use a Lucas bore guide to keep my cleaning rod centered in the barrel. I have an adjustable rest that I made so I can put the barrels in the vise and then support the action on the rest. Insert the guide and then Clean the barrel. You can buy a patch catcher to attach at the muzzle end but I prefer to drink a bottle of Captain Morgan and use that. Most barrels won't be bigger than the mouth of the bottle. Get jags to hold your patches and only make one pass and let it drop into the bottle. No reason to drag contaminants back down your barrels.
    I'm no writer so look for articles on barrel cleaning from speedy's (Thomas Gonzalez) methods. Brownells has his methods listed in their saved info and it's on many benchrest pages as well. Speedy was one of my instructors at Trinidad State Gunsmithing college and I you want good gun knowledge start looking for anything from him you can find! I wish i could retian 1/10th of that man's knowledge!
    If you have any questions I would be more than happy to help in any way that I can.

      Wow those are some good suggestions. Installing the vice at the corner of the bench is probably good advice for any workbench, whether for gunsmithing or just general purpose. Thanks for sharing those ideas.

    I looked at getting frog lube when it first came out and everybody was talking about how good it was and everything else and then I started looking at what the process was to put it on and then I started hearing from people saying that. Yeah, once you use it and you get it permeated into the metal you can never use anything else and that killed it right there I decided. Yeah I'm not ever using something that I can never use anything else for one simple reason. What if I sell it to somebody else? I get rid of that gun. Well they are not going to want to use frog loop. Well they can't use anything else if I keep it and frog lube is no longer available for whatever reason. Nobody knows what's going to happen in the future. Probably could become unavailable non-manufactured anymore. Too expensive for me to purchase and then again I can't use anything else so and I also don't like being stuck to one product. I don't care how good it is so I find different things work for a while and then I can't get it. And my shops around here don't sell frog loot. It's something that has to be purchased online, which I don't mind doing, but I prefer to buy things from my local shops, support them as much as possible things may have changed with frog loop. I don't know. I haven't kept up with it in and I don't hear much about it anymore but that was my reason for not ever using it besides, I was watching the video mostly just to see how you set up your bench as in what you did to get some ideas. Not what products you were actually using

    You still like the Frog Lube? I left after two years, smelled nice but seemed to get tacky on the guns I didnt touch for a while.

      No. I got rid of it for the same reason you did. I use Slip2000 on everything now.

    i use oversized computer mouse pads instead of cleaning mats. they are pretty thick and don't attract lint or hair. you can get them on amazon.

    look in to a gun cleaning gun mat for your bench and for your ar projects find polymer vice block it is a life saver for your lower and me I will not turn down any tools. on my bench would have tool most used and store the rest in a tool box because every tool has it purposes. the cleaning mat folds up and made of nonslip surface I can talk all-day about thing I put on my bench hope this comment helps you out.

    What do you use the heat gun for?

    • @TheMdshooter
      @TheMdshooter  9 років тому

      I use it for various things. I use them to put on traction grips on pistols, I use them when I have a muzzle brake or something that won't come undone easily, I've used it to reshape certain parts if they don't align etc.
