Dream theater should collab with opeth and create the ultimate pop album
Zebes 26 Sure, just leave LaBrie out of it.
Poor James lmao
Tommy Karevik from Seventh Wonder on vocals and Mike Pinella from Symphony X on piano?
The ultimate SYNTH pop album, I'd say. XD
Nah... Devin Townsend, Opeth and Steven Wilson could make the best possible pop album.
00:00 Legend says that that hot pepper is still in his mouth.
I don't understand anything you say in videos like this but I still watch them.
A true fan
I'm the exact same man. I'm just hoping that by watching enough of these videos that i get a general understanding of what mike is saying.
@Claytob - Basic music theory and chord structure. Always good to know how stuff works, even if you don't fully understand the jargon. Props for that!
Same tbh. Even tho i play guitar
I do as well but I don't understand shit when it comes to music theory lol
Isolation Years was one of the first Opeth songs I listened to, and to this day it overwhelms me with emotions so much that I always cry when I listen to it (I was crying during the short sample of the song at the beginning of the video). So yes, I agree with your emotional interpretation. Amazing video as always!
Your closing statement is gold, dude. . . "Yours [pop] came in a bag, ready-made, ours [prog] is a hand-crafted artisan work." I hope you don't mind me quoting you. This was a profound and excellent analysis. You truly know music. I'm glad your channel exists. Thank you.
-Peace
I appreciate the good vibes 🤘 you may quote away.
Sadly, I don't have enough musical knowledge to inderstand this.
Someday I will
There's a sense of longing in me
As I read Rosemary's letter
Her writing's honest
Can't forget the years she's lost
In isolation
She talks about her love
And as I read
"I'll die alone"
I know she was aching
There's a certain detail seen here
The pen must have slipped to the side
And left a stain
Next to his name
She knows he's gone
And isolation
Is all that would remain
"The wound in me is pouring out
To rest on a lover's shore"
well fuck. im so sad now. this was like reading those 17th century poets...
All 48 views are mine.
Opeth can even make a chainsaw sound lovely
Does opeth is pop music? The rumour come out!!!
Conor Murphy mycaruba!!!
Im the music boy! Im the one who snobs!
Come everyone, let us go listen to opeth on nine ball island.
Literally made me Lol. Bravo
What did I tell you about listening to pop. JUST DONT
Opeth is one of my favorite band. You can feel the authenticity and sadness in each song.
Someone give this man an Oscar!
He can sing, he can act... can he dance ?
Popeth
Would like to see a Haken vs Pop. A good example would be their song "Earthrise". It's extremely poppy but it has a lot of time changes and interesting transitions to make it stand out!
Or a lot of the new Leprous material
Opeth - The Swedish word for clinical depression.. LoL 😂😂😂
If you're a white swede u would understand
@@kevinlatham7788 No I'm not. I'm an Indian. Can you explain?? Is it realted to opeth's music somehow?
@@anudeepjoshi126 a lot of depressingly disgraceful stuff has happened to Sweden. There fighting back though!! Look up Nordic resistance!!! Blessings from California;)
Kevin Latham bruh they are literal Nazis mate, they have no power here
Anudeep Joshi indian indian bhai bhai
Yes! We need more music theory videos
the sequel we've all been waiting for!
Your mention of Dream Theater makes me think you should make an entire series called 'Why Dream Theater does (insert word) better than (insert word)'. On a side note I'd like to see a video on why 'Take The time' is the greatest song ever...ok thats my bias as Take The Time is my favourite Dream Theater song.
BatcaveComics83 Nah, A change of seasons is the greatest song ever, even though I love take the time
It is very difficult to choose, I also love Stream of Consciousness.
BatcaveComics83 Great song without a doubt...love the classical touch towards the end - and obviously the mind blowing guitar solo around the 3:50 mark :)
BatcaveComics83 You like Symphony X?
I have to say I haven't ever listened to Symphony X.
Even though it’s their most “commercially acceptable” album, my favorite has to be Damnation. Not sure why, I love almost all of Opeth’s stuff but that album spoke to me.
Their new ones are more "acceptable" imo
Mr Stevenson Yep especially Pale Communion and Sorceress. Both albums are almost straight-forward compared to pretty much every prog album of the 70s for example
@@EzioMonty117 sorceress is still pretty proggy
Corey White Agreed with Damnation
My favorite type of Opeth was the Morningrise era (Not a fan of the audio engineering, I'm talking about their writing) one with a bleak depressing misty lake in an autumn forest atmosphere, all the counterpoints (they kinda overdid it but ok), changes between acoustic and heavy parts etc. but I'm ok with Mikael not wanting to growl. I wish they kept doing Damnation though. It had more integrity and an overall atmosphere and I can't compare it but Damnation is probably in my top 20 favorite albums ever, nothing else could give me the feeling Damnation gave. Now it all sounds just all over the place, in my opinion. I still love some songs from their past few albums but it does not feel as complete.
Isolation Years is such a beautiful song ❤
Thank you for this video. I really like these types of videos, as well as this reminding me that I had an Opeth album in my library I meant to listen to, which I’ve done now.
Mike The Music Snob. Making music better and more fun with each passing day.
Awesome analisys dude, It's funny 'cause I have listening for the first time the Ghost Reveries album today and I really appreciate. It's heavy and calm, the album catches me just in these perspectives cause I love dualities and Opeth is perfect in creating this aspect.
Damn that opeth song was so good never really listen to opeth but damn I gonna now
"Isolation Years" will make you cry, if you have a heart. Check out, "Face of Melinda" too.
Golgotha_Mythos69 thanks for the suggestion bro
Listen to Burden as well (if you haven't yet)..
with burden you will cry men xd
@@hadara69 My personal favorite Opeth song! Particularly the Roundhouse Tapes version.
Idc that Mike is speaking another language to me, I still love it
Lol, same for me. No idea what he's talking about but i really enjoy these videos.
These song breakdowns are actually amazing. I love learning about how the music works and how it is effective. Thank you for these videos!!
Steven Wilson does pop better
No Man, Blackfield, his solo shit... all of it amazing.
He definitely does
Nah
Mike makes music theory fun
Thanks for explaining to me why this is one of the very few songs that makes me cry, every single time. Great video, +sub
I think Opeth have now made it to my 6th favourite band, only under Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, Maroon 5, Creed and Sugar Ray
All the dislikes on this video are pop music fans
Opeth rules 🤘🏼
I thought you ate another hot pepper at the start of the video.
I used to hate opeth. Now they are my third favourite band. \m/
Jimmy Savile to be fair, limp bizkit and one direction are pretty amazing bands.
@@conormurphy4328 lol
curious to see whos 1st and 2nd
I am guessing Behemoth is there along with Iron FUCKING Maiden.
@@gaetantanguay9180 1st is Carach angren 2nd is Behemoth
So hard to keep the darkness from seeping through ... ♥
I listened to Damnation when going to sleep today interestingly enough
"Opeth, the swedish word for clinical depression" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA you got my subscription here
Does anybody else miss the technical death metal opeth, when he actually did his growls. Though I was able to get them from bloodbath but he left that sooio
Yeah blackwater park feels
I actually don't. If i want growls i'll just listen to old opeth
You easily have the best intros 😂
Well, I hadn't seen you DT video, so I'm looking forward to finishing this one!
mike i fucking love you, these videos are my fav
That intro is pure gold!
"That's the shit!"-Mike 2018
I want a Mike's music theory video series so I can learn the fundamentals needed to watch these type of videos and actually understand what the hell is going on. Now to go listen the Opeth's entire discography.
Tool vs pop!
The ideea is that he picked songs with proggressions that sound very similar to tge pop 4 chords. None of Tool's songs really sound like that. Maynard's dick is the only one, but that song is a joke
Tool sucks.
@@ogulcanyolcu8714 Why? I find them to be very interesting and complex. Not as complex as Dream Theater, or not as interesting as Opeth, but I think tool is still great😌
+Can Yolcu You are a fucking idiot
@@ogulcanyolcu8714 Agreed
It’s astonishing that Mikeal creates such a powerful and resonant progression by ear.
Fantastic video Mike, would love to see more theory related videos. Keep up the good work!
Black Rose Immortal is my personal favorite pop song.
This is so sad. Alexa, play Despacito.
Alexa, play Burden.
Alexa, play Bleak.
Alexa, play Hope Leaves
Everyone knows the Devil’s Orchard is the saddest of them all, because that’s when we realized Opeth really meant the Watershed album to be their watershed of an album.
Hmm, that was a really nice video Mike, destroy those pop musicians my boy. Now I gotta listen to isolation years. Also looking forward to your pain and suffering this Friday!
@Become The Knight : Good work. Nice singing. Awesome hair. chilled video. Like it. Keep it up
I would really love to see you cover this song.
I'm considering it
That intro reminded me when I just fractured my pinky last night. That was fun
My friend reccomended this, good shit. The background music is a bit too loud tho. Ghost Reveries are my fav Opeth album as well, nice pick. Subbed!
FBE should do a Teens react to Ghost Reveries video, Teens nowdays need to hear good music once in their lives
Another great video, keep it up and rock on \m/
I only got into Opeth late last year but they rose into being my top 5 bands fast, Isolation Years and the whole Damnation album are the reason for that, amazing music
I can't believe you hadn't heard of Opeth before until now! They're soooooo good
It was actually a joke. He has been a fan of Opeth for a while.
Nice Music Theory refresher for me. I've been saying this kind of stuff about Pop for decades. Producers exploit the public's penchant for the familiar as well as their lack of musical sophistication with these formulaic chord progressions.
The "Millenial Whoop" is another example of this.
Opeth are *real musicians.* That means they know how to move the listener. I've also been called a "music snob", btw...which makes me proud.
;)
I think the argument could be made, that Opeth is the best act in the history of popular music. Mike, your singing voice is not very far from that of Mikael Åkerfeldt. At least in this video.
You should have said one of the best. The way you said it invites people to disagree with you and say X band is better.
What a weird way of bringing pop and metal fans together 😊😊😊
Ohhhhh, that time that Opeth was better than any other band. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 Amazing video, bro! I’m being subjective here, cause Opeth are my musical idols.
Amazing video! Talk about how they “got damn close” in The River.
Lol opeth does better music than any alive band. And thats a fuking fact.
not anymore... I don't have a problem with prog rock, but sorceress was pretty bad
@@arkved sorceress bad? U are just deaf lol
Opeth does a great job of being a King Crimson tribute band these days
Even though i like Opeth very much. That's not a fact. That's your opinion
Yeah you're not wrong
Fuck ive been waiting for someone to do thiiis !!!!
next time if you could, play the chords you're talking about when you start analyzing them, and the ones you compare them to, would be really useful!
“The ward” on sorceress is probably the most “pop” Opeth gets, and I thoroughly enjoy it
Awesome vid, Mike. Keep it up!
Mind blown away
Amazing analysis!
Great stuff! I'd add to it, that the ethereal feeling also serves as a beautiful coda to the entire album. Death as the sweet release from all the darkness that came before if you will.
Not only the ii7 an aiml5ess chord but its a borrowed chord! In the aeolian mode, the ii is diminished, which would make a half diminshed ii, which is arguably one of the most tense chords which wouldnt leave room for the VIMajor7. Its just really cool cx.
Came for some Opeth talk, left needing to take a music theory class.
yes Opeth is the best boy band today!
If I could like more then once, i would. I dont know much about music theory but this is brilliant
what a beautiful song men, full of emotions
Mike, full cover please, I need it
Love the video, Mike! One quick question: How do you recommend one to learn music theory online? I already know a lot, but chords and chord progressions are a bit too complex for me.
(+MrDynamite110) I started with musictheory.net when I wanted to learn more than the basics I learned from learning violin (so probably about at the level you may be at). I then started watching channels like 8-Bit Music Theory, which basically just does analysis of video game soundtracks, giving more of an idea of things like chord progressions. At that point, I started making more advanced compositions using what I learned, which really helped with understanding. You’ll just need to write, no matter how bad you think it is. Good luck.
The beginning segment is 100% me when I'm scouring the interwebz for new prog lol.
Hey Mike!
Something that I think would be really interesting for you to do is to do a composition based series where you explore how you can use various modes to create melodies and then how to switch between them - the relationship between the modes and how they affect the mood of a given piece.
Hope this helps in some way.
Cheers,
Paul
mike how come you don't talk about jazz fusion in your videos? It is pretty much the prog of jazz, mixes it with all genres you could imagine.. Al Di Meola, Soft Machine, Progger, The Aristocrats, Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc... would like a video about that soon! or a patreon to suggest in ssf..
gabriel Allan Holdsworth and Steely Dan
Dont forget Miles Davis and Frank Zappa
In a bag vs hand crafted. Busch light vs your local breweries passion project.
But, yeah.. while I love opeth, absolutely unapologetically, sometimes the brain needs something simple. EDM has tons of good stuff, and it in many cases, balances out my listening experience.
I don’t know music theory, so I was super confused, but awesome vid
I’ve only been playing for 1 and a half years, so I haven’t gotten to the theory stuff yet
These chords remind of a lovely song by the band The Weepies, called "Little Bird "
When u Started to talk about music theory... suscribed.
Never thought I’d be that guy but FIRST
Confirmed.....since you weren't being a douche
Become The Knight In all seriousness though, great video you clearly know your stuff. You should make it into a series and call it “Mike’s chord progressions” or something
A vid on my favorite band? Don't mind if you do
9:23 Typo? That's an Bbmaj7, not an Fmaj7
Their version on Robin Trower's Bridge of Sigh is nice. Please do check both versions unless they are already familiar. Often when a heavy / hard rock / metal band sits down so to speak and bring their attitude into pop the result is enjoyable. Perhaps it is due to tight playing combined with hooks that do it.
That intro was hilarious!! Lol
you are awesome !
I'd say that some country and pop tunes can convey such emotions and messages. Whiskey Lullaby by Brad paisley and Happy by Pharrel Williams I think could fit the bill. Just far less common in those genres
As someone coming from your side of the argument I agree 99% with everything (I mean Opeth is my favorite band, I'm literally wearing an Opeth shirt right now lol) but I do have to say that throwing in Americana with Pop is kinda unfair. Stuff currently is often kinda meh (the whole recent wave is very samey and generically poppy), but through history theres been a lot of stuff that could be thrown into the Americana genre that do have really great emotional depth to the writing, especially in comparison to Pop in its lyricism (I would say for lyrics historically Folk/Americana are the leaders in depth). While theres definitely the boringness of pop in it too unlike pop theres been standouts through history like The Band or The Decemberists (okay its kinda cheating to include them considering they have a tendency towards random prog songs/albums, I mean what average band just randomly writes The Island or The Hazards of Love).
the intro was amazing.
I wish I could write songs like this. I have to learn more about music theory.
Love ur vids! Keep it up! :)
Very true dude love opeth I hate when some of these newer metal core bands combine pop with metal and they suck at it and it's repetitive and boring. Opeth know what there doing they can make it mellow and proggy or they can be super brutal and heavy this is a great example of what metal bands that want a softer approach should take notes from opeths, gojiras music
Damn reminding me I have litterature homework to do
How about the beginning of the song the drapery falls, or the song harvest?
if there is the vi step at the end ... since it is a substitute for the i,then we call that a "cheating" cadence .... it's like after that ii7(dorian) when you don't know where are you gonna go and then the vi step comes up,you think you're going in the right direction, but you get betrayed and get put into the void.
when you mention the melody it will be nice to put the sheet music in the screen, so the ones that can read them can follow more accurately the explanation
greatings man, love oyur videos
I don't know anything about Opeth's discography, any suggestions where to begin? That shit sounds great
Any album, any song. But for soft ones if you're new: damnation, sorceress, heritage, and pale communion. Morningrise and orchid are extremely unique compared to any of their albums however. In my opinion, they actually could be some of the most unique-sounding albums ever made.
@Jimmy Savile Well it seems worth it though. Thanks for the suggestion, I am gonna use myself some Opethium now. 👍
Blackwater Park is AMAZING !
Ghost Reveries, Damnation or Pale Comunion
Yeah, that's The Opeth Curse.
