There have been several times in which I’ve thought deeply about this series, and specifically Ging, and briefly came to the conclusion that he may just be my favorite character in the story. Of course after letting the thought slip away I always forget exactly what made me feel that way.
He certainly feels larger than life in the story, but also outside of it. Unlike some characters in media who’s life within a story feel hollow except for the sections we see as viewers, I wholeheartedly can imagine and appreciate Ging for his life in everything that’s happened off screen as well as on. He acts and speaks as freely and perfectly to his character as someone who has lived his life would. The same could be said about many characters in this story, but Ging definitely jumps out at me for this reason specifically.
His spirit and philosophy also feel very natural. I could easily see some writers play too much into different tropes with his character, but Ging feels very multifaceted and nuanced. He has loads of wisdom, but also has the heart of a person who is still chasing after their dreams, not one who has already reached them. You can tell throughout his life the amount of people he has made a beautiful impression on across the world.
I’ve been typing this comment on mobile for what feels like 2 hours, and despite attempting multiple more paragraphs about Ging they haven’t felt quite right, but I think you could go on about his character for days while still finding new angles to explore. I think its best to end it here to keep my sanity.
Anyways, loved the video, and he truly is misunderstood sometimes!

As the incarnation of the ultimate freedom and pursuit of knowledge, I personally think his relationship with Gon is tied to his personal interest and goal, for instance, but I don't care enough to discuss it with the likes of you.

I think a lot of people have trouble viewing him in this way because of personal issues, which is hard to criticize them for. But you're right - Ging is a human being with good and bad to him. It's not good to shy away from the bad, as you don't, but it's important to recognize his intent.

Meh, people are always going to have negative opinions about bad fathers in fiction which is where those arguments tend to start lol. That, and it’s not as if the Zoldycks aren’t also well realized characters-arguably moreso than aging in the eyes of many due to the not insignificant difference in screen time and more in-your-face plot significance.

He is in the "call the authorities" category, while Ging is just a bad dad. His actions do cause harm to Gon, but it was never what he meant. And I know his lack of intent is no excuse, but it still does put him in a different category than Silva. Ging is negligent, not cruel.

One little moment that stood out to me about Ging was when he was speaking with Cheadle in the election arc and sharing the information about all the chimera ant soldiers that Pariston had gained control over after the whole mess in NGL and East Gorteau. He casually threw out the line "you should make friends with more airship pilots" (or something to that effect), which to me shows that he's the sort of guy who can strike up a friendship with anybody in any walk of life.
As you mentioned, it's when those myths and larger than life expectations about him get in the way that he has trouble interacting with others. But take that out of the picture, and he's probably able to find plenty of common ground with other people based on shared interests, hobbies, or attitudes.

Ging is honestly one of my favorite characters from the series, and you've perfectly laid out how I see him. He definitely does care for Gon, and thought he was doing what was best for him. In a way, that may have proven true had it not been for the Chimera Ant arc. Gon's peaceful upbringing on that small island, with an optimistic goal in his heart, certainly benefited Gon in many ways. In all honesty, I think Mito raising him to believe that Ging had willingly just ditched him did more psychological damage than if she had been truthful from the start. By the time she finally admitted what really happened, Gon was already halfway out the door to start his journey to get answers from the man himself, and he was so attached to Mito that he never really seemed to process the impact of having been lied to. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that Ging never visited or stayed in touch at all, but that might have felt a lot less personal had Gon been able to take into account that Mito had used to Gon to try to tie his father down. Sure she was a good mother.. but that was the least she could do after having torn a son away from his father in the hopes that Ging would abandon all the happiness he'd found for himself to play house with his own cousin...

  • @Nothinmuchbaby
    @Nothinmuchbaby 11 місяців тому +40

I think Ging is a bad parent because of HOW he cares for Gon, but there is no question after going over the entire series that he does care. Another interesting angle to consider is that maybe Hunters just make bad parents in general. We don’t and may never know the full extent of Beyond Neteros upbringing, but he had no public contact with Isaac, and even some of the people closest to the chairman had no idea Beyond even existed. I like to think that Ging, however, was aware of these two and their real relationship, and may have been trying to replicate that dynamic with Gon in some ways.
Besides the Freecs and Neteros, how many other active Hunters even have children that we know of? It’s a profession for people who selfishly pursue their passions and forsake their traditional responsibilities, so it stands to reason that they make bad parents. Then again, they all seemed to think that Ging was an egregiously bad father, so maybe not 😂

    • @heitorsantoslima9289
      @heitorsantoslima9289 3 місяці тому +2

@@Nothinmuchbaby Yep, he is still a child and I didn't meant that he was fully responsible for some of his shortcomings and the way he handled some situations that were maladaptive. What I meant is that hunters in a way are consistently portrayed as flawed friends, lovers or relatives. So Gon saying he wasn't a good son can fit his way of disobeying/leaving Mito, his feelings of self worth and treatment of his image of Ging, etc. It's like Togashi is treating people with high achieving goals as double edged swords: yeah, the world is full of things to look at and pursue, but is meaningless without people to share. Is people who shape the world, so 'those who hunt and pursue' can become lost if they don't connect with those around them and those people who hunt goals can easily walk a fine line between needing people and disregarding the feeling of loved ones entirely. Hence the quote 'hunters don't make good parents'. Their egotism may get in the way of their relationships.

the funny thing is with how much happened and is happening and yet to happen we are still far away from adressing the main plot of hxh which is gings hunt. what is he hunting for and why is he hunting that and how did he know of its existance and why did he changehis distination and how is it connected to the dark contient and how is connected to don frecs and how is it connected to gons mother and gon and netero and beyonf ... there are more tha a few questions that need to be answered before we can fully profile ging..of course we have a few hints like his design for example a vagabond in 90s japan urban alley which i loved btw ..its already hinting at an adventurous carefree drifter mentality we also knw that he is smart with how well he reads pariston we can also tell from the clue he lft to gon that he cares about him to an extennt and we also know he is strong and willing to fight and is but also willing to talk respected..these hint are what makes hxh a masterpiece because its a slowburn and it respects the readers intellect to piece together everything and have discussion like this.but still these are just early hints and until we know the full story we cant judge ging maybe the main plot will be adressed in the final arc in 2064

A minor point in regards to Ging (at least compared to this video) that I find interesting is Ging’s recording talking about Greed Island and Gon’s mother.
It’s a time where, at least in my eyes, he more apparently recognizes that Gon may be a different person from himself, even if not fully considering he didn’t meet him outside of when he was a baby. He gives Gon the explicit choice to listen on to try to find him, and even learn about his birth mother - albeit with the recording unable to be listened to again if stopped.
Idk if I’ve touched on the nuances of his character fully in this comment, I just found that scene particularly interesting to think about when going over this topic.

Honestly, after watching this video, I think it confirms my own personal headcanon that Gon has no mother, or at least, affirms it.
I say this for two reasons.
One, Ging truly believes that Gon is Ging, or at least close enough to him to the point where they'd want the same things. I say this because Ging has faith that because Gon is his son, then he can handle anything thrown his way. We first see this when Gon opens the box from Ging and he tells Gon to stop listening if he doesn't want to see him, and only after reaffirming that's what he wants to do, he challenges Gon to find him. Why? Because that's what Ging would do to himself. Ging wants to be challenged, he wants to find the things that he thinks matter to him, and he wants to piece together puzzles and solve them himself. That's why he has so many crazy achievements to his name, and also why he seems detached and doesn't let things he considers to be minor bother him. He's never gotten angry at anyone on screen, he's never shown anything but mild annoyance and the occasional act of empathy.
We see this again when Gon arrives at Greed Island and tells Gon to simply enjoy the game and experience, which is something Ging himself would have wanted to do. He also told Razor to not hold back against Gon for the same reason: He wouldn't want anyone else to hold back against him if they were serious about being his opponent. The final time we see this is naturally, when Gon is in critical condition. Ging know how durable he is, and at this point, he would know from Dwun that Gon cleared Greed Island, so Ging believes there's nothing at this point that would keep Gon down, because he believes Gon to be not just his son, but a direct copy of him.
While this is all well and good, how does it explain that Gon doesn't have a mother? Ging doesn't have the body to give birth, and even if he did, he'd still need someone else to do the deed with. That's where point two comes into play.
Two, there's an item in the required slots of Greed Island called Pregnancy Stones. The item description reads as follows: "Carry a stone (weighing 7 lb. each) for one month, and you will get pregnant, even if you're male. You may choose the sex of the baby by the female or male stone." It's also revealed that Gon was on Greed Island before he appeared as a player, as the first player listed in his spellbook was an anagram of Ging's name. This is how he ran into Kite because it was programmed to take Gon to Kite instead of Ging depending on the spell he used. Therefore, I can only come to the conclusion that Gon has no biological mother, and that Ging carried Gon using these stones (which he absolutely would have had access to in order for the game to work), and gave birth to him on Greed Island.
If Ging birthed Gon in this manner, it's less accurate to say that Gon is Ging's son, and more like his clone. However, that still doesn't change the fact that Gon would live to become and lead an entirely different life than Ging. Ging's failing here is that he believed too much in his own nature, which he believed Gon would inherit (and to a degree, he did), but had no control over how he was going to be nurtured the moment Mito made him hand Gon over to her. It also explains why Ging handed Gon over to Mito, too. One, he had no faith in himself as a father, especially not with all the stuff he was up to, so there's no way he could have raised his son properly, and two, he believed that if his son was raised and nurtured in the same environment as him, then he would eventually go out into the world, just as he did. Ging was right about that, but he couldn't account for the fact that his son would want to see him, which is also why when he realized that Gon was in fact, not a perfect copy of him, but his own person, he agreed to end the hunt for him and let them talk with a minor hurdle just to throw in an extra challenge, not just because he wanted to help Gon, but because he needed to confirm for himself that Gon was his own person and not a copy of himself.
Of course, this theory is just that, a theory. It's entirely possible that Gon's biological mother could show up at any given moment, or information about her would be revealed, but I still think there's too much smoke for there to not be a fire in this regard.

Ging is easily my favorite HxH character. I feel like a lot of the hate comes from a childish place of disdain for how he left Gon, but people dont realize that he and Gon are kindred spirits. If you look closely, you'll realize Gon never once hated Ging for leaving him, the only thing he felt was an intense curiosity regarding what about being a hunter was so amazing.
Throughout the one big detour that is HxH, he found his answer, the answer ging left for him; the things that you gain along the way are better than what you originally wanted, and being on an endless hunt means you'll never stop finding those things.

He is a brilliant tactician and understands human behavior on a deep level, yet acts a fool when it comes to family. It's only after he finally starts talking to Gon that he finally understands the point of familial connections and just says "Huh. This is nice."

7:41 Gyro was supposed to be a parallel to Gon, I think, and when you say this here, it makes his backstory seem not entirely useless. With enough looking into it, the reader or viewer can understand Ging's relationship to Gon because he wasn't completely disinterested in him like Gyro's father was... While his father just walked away like nothing, Ging had that whole plan, even if he was trying to get away because he was self-conscious.
I hate when people say Ging hates Gon or doesn't care about him because it couldn't be further from the truth, and I can notice some things about me and my Dad's relationship similar to theirs, so it's pretty special to me. He even calls me Gon sometimes as a joke....
Trying not to get too personal here, but my dad has definitely been with me my entire life, but it didn't feel like it emotionally for most of my childhood, but there have been changes, and it's been better for the both of us :D He's always cared about me and my family so, so much, but had/has trouble expressing it properly, like Ging... And he is a little weird too lol
He's halfway through the Chimera ant arc right now, and I can't wait for him to meet Ging since I really think he'll like him (at least I hope)

I wish you showed a bit of evidence for your point about Gon misunderstanding Ging. Maybe there was something in the manga, which I only read past the anime. The way I interpreted things, Gon saw Ging's challenge of finding him the same way he did. It's only the side characters that thought otherwise, like Leorio and the game master who said that Ging was wrongfully avoiding him. The thing that sets Gon and Ging apart from the rest is that they view challenges with utmost importance, regardless of cost. That kind of dedication and passion is what drives people to do great things and reach fulfillment, which imo is what the entire show is meant to convey. Nen is the illustration of that, and characters that have the most passion and obsession happen to possess the most nen. Netero, Ging, and the King pursue their goals more than anyone else and sacrifice their perceived well-being to do so, because their actual well-being relies on that very resolve.

One thing often not mentioned is how young Ging appears to be when he brings Gon back to the island and with the mystery around Gon's mother it feels like a set up that even if out of love Gon might have not been planned. I think acknowledging how young Ging was and how unfit he was to be a parent both in his age and lifestyle makes it clear to understand why Mito would have fought so hard for rights to Gon making the conversation about this more than just "Ging was a bad dad" and into a complex understanding of purely human dynamics at play during the time; something shown to be a flaw of Ging. It really doesn't change the out come or the actions but I think it does help put some characterization into that part of Mito and Ging life.

Ging gave Gon a purpose, a drive to explore the world, and opportunities to grow and become self reliant. Ging probably knew his life as Hunter meant he was being hunted, so Gon being hidden was to protect him. Maybe he wasn't present to give Gon a normal life and upbringing, but in a way he provided Gon the means to live a truly fulfilling life of experiences. So was he truly a terrible father? Absent yes, but terrible? I don't think so.

honestly i don’t agree with your analysis of ging i think ging is sad he can’t take care of gon as his selfish goals got in the way of that as he wants to explore the dark continent more than he wants to take care of gon. and this isn’t entirely abandoning his family as he could be searching for his relative don. ging does not force gon to become a hunter gon decides that on his own and once he does only then does ging start stepping in to be involve in this journey with greed island. ging is smart enough to set up enough enough puzzles/paths to guide his son ie greed island. aka he still leaves choice for gons path as well as prepares for how gon could turn out. i think the biggest moment in hunter hunter that proved to me ging was a caring father was giving gon a choice at the ending of greed island he could meet ging only if he doesn’t bring his friends. now gon chooses to bring his friends and ging sends him to kite. i read this as ging trying to make sure there were friends for ging to guide him otherwise he would have to step in and help gon himself not that he wanted to turn away his son if he had made friends. ging knows he will meet gon eventually as a hunter and he would only need to meet gon early if there wasn’t a support structure for gon. this is evident when ging doesn’t try to help his son after the conclusion of the chimera and ark because he knows gons friends will be able to help gon over come that obstacle themselves without his help. ging really believes in gons friends especially after meeting leorio. idk if i got all my thoughts out but i know there is more to this.
