    For those who want to try their hand in one of these simulators, Delta has one at their museum in Atlanta, that you can "fly" for $400 for an hour. I believe its actually an old 737-200 simulator, which they kept when they got rid of their 737-200s..

      falconeaterf15 It happens.
      I know someone who got a jump-seat on a busy flight and on landing the brakes or thrust reversers failed and the co-pilot freaked-out as he thought they were going off the end of the runway. They stopped with about 150m to spare (might actually have been on the over-run) but I think they had to evacuate the aircraft. Even pilots are mortal.

    • @wyattsutton563
      @wyattsutton563 4 роки тому

      @falconeaterf15 The pilots know how to deal with everything; they know that if something happens, such as a bird strike or an engine failure, no one is going to die. They know what to do. I understand you're just being funny, but if you were a pilot and someone said that to your face, then how would you feel?

      I can completely relate to that. The first time I saw some major airline disaster being reconstructed on TV, with some big problem starting at 40000 feet, it felt so strange for me that the co-pilot just got a checklist out and started to go through every step there. Turned to my father who was like 'that's usually how it works. Unless there is immediate danger of a crash you forget about the checklist, but otherwise you get the checklist. It will usually tell you what to do to find the problem and (if possible) isolate that problem and land safely'
      But it completely defies your logic as a kid, when you think like 'shouldn't you go down as soon as possible?'

    Well trained pilots indeed ! A question : what about the maximum landing weight of such an aircraft bound for germany from NYC ? Are there any fuel dumping procedure to cope with before getting back to the airfield ? Maybe not on the simulator ? Thanks.

    is it not better to reduce the thrust lever to idle immediately, since fuel flow is a major factor during compressor stall/surge to avoid uncontrollable fire or complete lost of power?

    • @AviationHubOfficial
      @AviationHubOfficial  6 років тому +23

      That's a really good question mate. And I don't know, but I'll give it a reasonable guess: I'd assume all fuel flow is cut-off to idle level on an engine failure/fire warning automatically, and it does seem to be the case: Pre-bird strike, pause@ 1:15 - look at the lower middle MFD/ECAM, the third green row is Fuel Flow (FF - KG/H), the number is illegible but visually identical to the other three on that row, as it should be. Engine failure registered at 1:26 , you can see immediately the FF has gone down to three digits already, consistent with idle power as if the levers were pulled instantaneously. So it makes no real difference what they do to the ENG1 lever at this point.
      Whether thats some automatic operation, or just because the engines have stopped! I don't know, but there has to be a logical explanation for the SOP. So the question should be, should the engine 1 MASTER be switched off immediately? Or manually disable the fuel pumps? and would that make a difference? We need an Airbus engineer in here. Also check the FF on ENG failure here ua-cam.com/video/jzjyr0UZKRw/v-deo.html
      I have over-thought this. Look what you made me do @Daddy Kush!

    • @petersilie7472
      @petersilie7472 6 років тому +3

      You are probably right! This is what I thought, too. Maybe the FADEC reacts to the compressor stall/surge with an immediate fuel cut off automatically. I believe aircraft manufacturers are forward enough to implement such a system ;). Thanks for your detailed answer, @AviationHub!

      No worries man, thanks for an insightful question that got me thinking about something I'd never considered before. Most of my inbox is a variation of "they just stick on autopilot and a computer does the rest" or "at 3 minutes the captain didn't... " *insert a procedure contained in no SOP/FCOM ever* ".... so it's refreshing ha :)

    • @wiedehopf9068

      Shutting down the wrong engine is a major danger so engine shutdown procedures have quite a few steps. If you reduce the wrong engine to idle you should notice the loss of additional thrust or notice the mistake on the engine status page.
      Even more critical with twins.
      So no immediate actions because it increases the danger of this mistake.

    • @wiedehopf9068
      @wiedehopf9068 6 років тому +4

      Fuel cut off would be no fuel. Automatic engine shutdown via FADEC is reserved for overspeed conditions only. This is to avoid losing thrust in critical situations (double birdstrike for example).
      What i would suspect is in this case that the engine slowed down due to the engine damage and the fuel injected depends on RPM even before FADEC. So the engine turning slower means less fuel is injected.
      This video is an example of a quite serious bird strike, as soon as the bird hits the EPR gauge goes down to 0 within a second or so.

      These planes has always alot of fuel onboard so very strange they did not dump fuel. A Quantas 380 had an engine failure and had to land with to much fuel, that did almost end in a disaster.

      They cheated. Pause at 4:23 , look at the right (or left) ND, the landing weight is that of the A380 MLW (391,000KG). So this theoretical flight wouldn't have made it across the atlantic anyway!

    • @PureMatteo
      @PureMatteo 5 років тому

      in real life they would, but only if there was noo fire, and in a simulator you don't have time (and money) to spend an hour dumping fuel over the designated area. And again, in case of fire, you just come back, overweight landing is fine and is just maintenance check and paperwork, it is the least of your concern when you had a fire. If the engine has stalled or is "only" broken, then yes you can decide to take the time to dump fuel to make the landing safer (easier and nominal) and the structual integrity legally in check after landing.
