So I actually saw this and apparently that tier list is based on sum growth total, lysithea is great but her low growth rates in some of her stats means that her total stat growth total is fairly low, lorenz inversely is high because his strength and magic combined add up. This also means HP, Luck, and Charm are considered equally important to Mag, Spd, and Def: which is dumb.
Mega Rotom Yeah, even with it being based on growth rates, this was terrible. Lysithea has an insane magic growth rate of 70%. From what I can tell, stat growth rates very rarely exceed 60% without there being something about the character that could justify it.
@@AzureGreatheart it's 60%, lysithea has stats where it matters, access to thyrsus, and the best spell list by far as she has access to warp, seraphim, dark spikes T, and Luna A.
I'd argue that given that explanation... it's still a very bad tier list. Because ordering characters by that criteria is a terrible way to rank them and is useful to exactly zero people.

Man, I really think you are sleeping on Hilda. She's been one of my strongest units in both of my Golden Deer runs, including my current maddening mode run. On top of solid stats, she pretty often isn't counterattacked when using an art thanks to her crest, which makes Smash have a relatively high rate of safety between the chance of crit and chance of not being countered. EDIT: Also, "You lost to ME!?" is S-tier victory quote.
Her early game is not great at all. Shes a unit who takes time to get where she is. While others grow faster she needs a bit more time to get where people say she is
During maddening, her early game is OK. She shines the moment she gets to have a wyvern. Canto and her high damage really work well for her but without having canto she dies way too easy since her speed isn't top tier also because she uses axe.
Nobody really has a "good" early game in maddening, but if they did it would be Hilda. Being able to attack without being countered is really powerful if you utilize it. Move her first, use Smash, either one shot the enemy or see if crest procs, plan rest of turn accordingly and move guys next to her for attack boost. Also, her speed growth is pretty dang good (50%), combined with her high strength to counteract the weight of axes. I just looked over my current golden deer team at around lvl 14 and she is tied with Byleth and Claude for second highest speed (I recruited Felix). She generally doubles with a training axe. Her weakest aspect is her Dex, she misses on basic attacks vs sword dudes. Either way, a big part of any character's strength is using them to their potential... If you aren't doing that then you are going to think they are weaker than they are. For instance I actually thought Ignatz and Annette were worthless because I never considered the value of rally.

And if you mean her attack speed, she also has a base 45% strength stat, so after a few levels weapon weight wont even matter. If you really want to, put a little bit in heavy armor for weight -3
It bears mentioing that this tier list was released after each character's bases and growths were datamined ahead of the release of the game. Lysithea's placement is in large part due to her glass cannon growth patterns, and was made without reference to Thyrsus the Game Breaking Fun Stick and her two seals

Lysithea is clearly a min-max unit who's totals won't tell the craziness of the character.
Pretty sure this was out before the game came out or right at release. It’s so bad because as they state in the article it’s solely based on their total stat value. Lysithea is “evaluated” so poorly because she gets less overall stats but we know she’s so great because she gets them in the right place, along with having a broken relic for her crest, and among one of the best spell lists. Just goes to show that numbers aren’t everything.
We had spell list early. One look at her spell selection would make you realize she was good. Warp has been the best spell in the series longer than most players have been old enough to play the game.
Darrell Murray In addition to Warp, she is also the only magically inclined character who gets seraphim*, which is extremely useful against monsters. She also gets luna, the spell that pierces resistance. *Yes, I know Edelgard gets it, but her unique classes are both stronger versions of the armor/fortress knight, and have no access to magic. You have to go out of your way to make her a mage.
@@maverick5169 Seraphim and Dark Spear are good spells to have and she's the only way to get the latter on 3/4 routes. 1-2 range is only ever beaten by Thoron and magic weapons from the magic side.
I remember this tier list, it's the way it is because they add up their stats and rank everyone purely on the total. So Lysithea, who is dreadful in half the stats (which don't matter for her) is lowest. This isn't to defend the tier list, it's a dreadful way to judge characters ofc. Excelling in a few stats is way better than having okay stats across the board. Lysithea and Petra are both easily top 5 (IMO they are top 2 in maddening) because they both excel at the most important stats. On a separate point, I think Bernadetta is one tier above Ashe. Her personal really helps her damage output (especially early game) and Encloser is amazing for chip + support.

@@PockitGames Old comment but, Edelgard at base has a combined 385% growth rate, Dimitri has 375%. The problem is they are just looking at total growths. Dimitri has better growths in important stats (5% more str, 10% more speed, 5% more def) but Edelgard also has a 25% higher magic growth that neither unit cares the least bit about, but DOES contribute to her combined growth percentage. Which really does show just another problem with this metric.
@@moonmelons yeah, thx for the correction. and we should indeed take into account all forms of play that a character brings, rather than look at straight values with little to no context. which is why someone like Sylvain is top tier, correct growts, correct combat arts and skills and easy avaiability with a useful crest.
I personally disagree with Bernadetta and Ashe being about equal. Everyone always talks about how broken Bernadetta is but she has pretty terrible growth rates (aside speed/dex) and overall she doesn't do much for me, as much as I love her. For me, she never gets good until right before the endgame. Her accuracy is really shaky most of the time, even using Curved Shot and a training/iron bow against enemies that aren't particularly evasive or standing on an evasion tile. Her personal skill is really tricky because it's hard to let her get damaged without basically killing her due to low defense. She has a Crest so she takes no damage from Relics and has a weakness in both swords and axes so it takes a long time to train her to use a Devil Axe/Sword. So the only real way is to use it consistently is to either put her in danger constantly or get lucky by her gaining HP in a level up. Ashe on the other hand has a personal locktouch skill and works well in almost any physical class you put him in. He's actually made a great War Master for me because the combination of his good speed and luck and ridiculous dexterity, he's able to get 4 hits in with gauntlets, will likely get at least one crit, and is pretty resilient to enemies that have higher crit rates. He's also fairly good as a Wyvern Rider/Lord too, since it plays to his strength in axes and hidden talent in lances. His strength issues can be fixed more easily due to Death Blow from Brigand and time in most axe classes due to his natural affinity for axes. I'll admit Bernie's combat arts are way better than Ashe's though. Her budding talent is too. And the fact that she has a Crest and it allows her to double is pretty good, but it only has a 10% activation rate. Bernadetta isn't a bad unit whatsoever but I find she really only does well if she's going through the archer or cavalier lines (or pegasus knight) unless you really take it upon yourself to train out her weaknesses. She's very good late into the game and amazing when she has The Inexhaustible but Ashe is very consistently good for me since the beginning due to his strengths playing into a variety of different paths he can go while Bernadetta has the most weaknesses along with Mercedes (and Lysithea if you don't unlock her hidden talent).
Bernadetta is so good because she is extremely rng proof. She only needs a few hp and str growths and she can abuse the shit out of the combat art vengeance. Double lancefaire, death blow, defiant crit, defiant avoid, lance proficiency 5. I've had her vengeance art critting for around 300 damage at around level 40. That's Dimitri without crest proc levels of damage. Alternatively, you can build sniper on her, double bowfaire, hit +20, death blow, bow crit +10, bow proficiency 5, and spam hunters volley to deal lots of damage even with mediocre strength.
Also why is everyone sleeping on Ferdinand? He's directly comparable to Sylvain that everyone froths with the only difference being he's harder to recruit on non-CF routes but considering this is a general tier list and not a route specific one he should be up there with Sylvain.
Sylvain is the easiest unit to recruit, as well as having versatility being able to become a dark knight. Magic for armored units, swift strikes for low defense units. He is overall a bit more offensive than Ferdinand who is a bit more defensive. Sylvains personal makes him deal 3 more damage per hit when a female is nearby, which synergizes really well with Leonie, and his crest has a chance of boosting combat art damage. Meanwhile Ferdinand gets +Avoid at full hp, and his crest has a chance for combat arts to negate counter attacks. Over all though, I'd say both are amazing units when built properly. Both being good with axes means they can easily grab death blow, which boosts damage quite a bit on swift strikes.
Yeah Ferdinand requires heavy armor to recruit which is generally the worst thing to invest time in and the hardest to increase early game. And Sylvain has a better personal skill, Ferdinand has the opposite thing that Bernie has. But it's so easy to take damage that Ferdinand will almost never have it in effect

I’m going to make a case here. Lysithea isn’t as good as people say. She is really really good, but not perfect. Her offenses are spectacular and white magic is amazing. She deletes the death knight, and warps like a madman However, she has easily the worst defenses in the entire game. She can go down in one hit. She is a paper bazooka. Definitely S tier, but nowhere near the best.
@@MicDISCO i would put byleth and the lords above her. she is certainly useful, but as you mentioned, she dies if an enemy as much as breathes in her general direction. she can delete any enemy she comes across, but you have to make sure she is not targeted by anyone as soon as enemy phase starts. IMO, that extra care needed hurts her status as the best unit in the game. you can put dimitri in the middle of the enemy team and watch him go to work. you cannot do the same with lysithea
On my playthrough of this game, Lysithea was one of my lowest level units because I tended to favor Byleth and Felix after I got him, like at the end of the game she was at level 20-something, and still came damn close to oneshotting the final boss on his defensive tile on hard. She's an absolute god.
Dmitri is the best unit in this game, period. It's borderline cheating how much damage he can deal. I'm no Lysethia fan, but she doesn't deserve to be last, she's just very niche IMHO. I usually prefer to have Annette or Lin doing the mage job, they deal with some damage better as I most often felt like she was taking the spot of better units for various situations (at least in the reckless way I play this game). Sylvain and Felix should be higher, they just work so great, all Blue Lions are awesome, even Dedue. As for Raph... I didn't manage to do anything good with him so far, I'm so sorry Raph, you are the last in row IMHO.
It seems their estimates have to do with their growth totals, where Ingrid has stat growths equivalent to lords, and Lysithea ties with Dedue in having the least growths.

in general yes, dimitri is better. But then Edelgard has Aymr and those stupid Raging Storm, the most broken combat art in the game, so no, Edelgard still better
Also side note I'm realizing how screwed over I've been when it comes to Petra. No playthrough I've done out of like 7 so far has she gotten more than 20 str and speed even when she has kept up in levels.

Annette is also the crit queen. Her Dex growth is very high and she's got excalibur. It's why even though she's slow, it never mattered for me cause she would crit everything anyway.
Everybody sleepin' on my boy, Dedue. War master Dedue with gauntlets is a wrecking ball. Who needs 4 hits when you kill an enemy in 2? Not your thing? Go fortress knight Dedue for and absolute physical wall that baits enemies perfectly with his personal skill of +4 Def when just moving/waiting on a turn. Pair with brawling training to get a self heal that makes him an infinite physical wall. Magic is the only thing that stops him but that's what other units are for. I've only done Hard so far so maybe Maddening changes this, but to me, he's A tier all day. Caspar too but he's more frail and the extra speed didn't make a huge difference to me between the two.
Ooh boy a bad tier list! Can't wait to see what cruddy opinions people have! Especially when they try to present them as objective. Also giving pre-watch thoughts from what I see with you scrolling. S Tier: Already if we are going by units, Edelgard's default class is an armor. Now yes you can put her into a riding or flying class but if you are trying to be quick, forcing those ranks on her can take just a bit too much time. A tier: Claude being not in S just makes it automatically wrong, same with Dimitri. Atrocity for Dimitri is amazing and Claude has an amazing class and gets pass automatically. B Tier: Hubert is really good. Only available on two routes but his spell list is basically like a male Lysithea's. Also he can be really speedy usually. Only flaw that I will say gets him at an inbetween is he thrives more as a Dark mage which is hard to get. Sylvain, Mercedes, and as much as I hate her character wise Leonie are A tier for sure. Lorenz is C tier because he is a mixed bag, because his strength and mag growths are the same. C: All of that is just wrong. D: Already the fact that Lysithea doesn't appear here tells me this person is an idiot. E: Oh boy the writer clearly has bias.
I say Lysithea should be A tier , very good Spells nuking , but really can't take a hit physically. Low HP/DEF growth. For a Average or Veteran she's Extremely good, but not sure if a Below than average player would think she that good.

IIRC, they say it's based on total number of stat points and doesn't factor in where the points are distributed (obviously) Edit: it does still say it at the top of the tier list: "This Fire Emblem Three House Best Characters Tier List Ranks every character by their total stat value" I'm upset that you don't get Lorenz's timeskip outfit for Dark Knight nor Leonie's for Bow Knight. I feel like Ignatz should be higher too: I agree with those rallies and he's debuff game is pretty strong. +20 personal and +20 from archer, he can actually reliably hit assassin's from 6 spaces away. If you're lucky to get some luck and dex boosters, then he can even crit from that range too. I think it's kinda awkward that Edlegard can be a better mage than Dorothea when you look at growths and skills. I really like Annette as a rally-bot too. I love my armored units, but in maddening, Dedue and Raph struggle so much with the poison strike archers and the abundance of mages and they're slow so they get doubled by everything. Without NG+ to give them QR early, it's a really tough grind. But they're amazing enemy phase units in hard or normal
Banri Swirl The durability limits it to five times in a single battle, and it has to be repaired afterwards. In addition, iirc, Amyr is repaired using friggin’ *agarthum*, which is maddeningly rare. You can completely break one map, but you’re not gonna be using Amyr for awhile afterwards.
@@banriswirl6414 It takes Agarthium to repair Aymir, which you can get from the Desert Sand Worms, and the Titanuses which appear in the Battle against Cornelia, Gwendal, Rodrigue, Felix and Ingrid.
Dorothea’s easily B-tier or higher. She’s a perfect support character if you have her as a dancer, and works pretty damn well on the offensive if you train her enough in sword and reason. For every playthrough I’ve done, she’s been at least in my top five units.
Personally, I think Bernie can be in a comfortable spot in A tier because of her versatility. Take her on a few tea dates and boom, you've got a good dancer. Get her on a horse. Boom! She is among the better Bow Knights in the game. Her Crest is dummy broken, as it works with Brave Weapons, and her signature bow, The Inexhaustable, happens to be exactly that. She can also be among the better brawlers in the game as well. Super useful and best girl.
So basically: every unit has its tactical niche and tier lists are mostly useless because good players will make their units work for them. The only exception is units that have clear advantages over the rest of the cast, usually the player character or second most plot- driving unit.
That's an unpopular opinion with multiple fallacies in it. Not every unit has a 'tactical niche'. There are units that are just objectively better than others. For example, if you want a dedicated archer on your team you would be better off recruiting Leonie and benching Ashe. Leveling up Ashe consumes XP and his personal ability, growths, and bases are completely eclipsed by Leonie, who will come at a higher level. This makes her a very high value recruitment option given the limited resources you have to recruit other units. Furthermore, you also present a false dichotomy by presenting tier lists as if there is a decision to be made between looking at them or being "good" at the game. There is no decision to be made. You can do both. Players who are "good" at the game tend to engage in discussion and analysis, which tier lists promote, so your point is fundamentally false about them being useless assuming you consider becoming "good" useful.
Only through chapter 11 of my BL Maddening run but Dedue has been a godsend for me with his high defense and personal skill early game. I went through brigand and warrior/grappler and now he can pretty much one round anything but the tankiest units with Death Blow Gauntlets. Obviously not my best unit but vital to my playthrough for sure
Hm... Dedue practically CARRIES the BL Maddening run in the early game... Without him... It would hardly be possible, so FOR maddening... Dedue should be significantly higher.
Ingrid is good, but at least in my maddening (no NG+) playthrough sylvain and felix were better. Felix is just a speeddemon and putting thunderbrand on him killed literally anything in one hit.
I think Bernadetta is much better that Ashe, their growths a similar but Bernadetta ability to deal 5 extra damage is much more useful than Ashe Locktouch or w/e it’s classes. Also Bernadetta has Indech crest which amazing to be able to attack with 3 basic attacks. What I think really makes Bernadetta one of the best bow knights is the fact that she get enclose which is hands down owe of the most useful abilities in the game. To me Ashe doesn’t compare at all
Am I the only one who had a just all right Lysithea like she was good and punked the death knight but she kept getting killed by flyers and even calvary units if she didn't have dark spikes equipped
If anything Bernadetta should be slightly higher than Ashe by virtue of having a better Personal Skill. Probably not enough to be different tiers, but placement within tiers.
I think it was more the hype. Everyone hypes up Lysithea as being the best unit so then newbies who play the game expect her to solo the entire thing with zero strategy or skill on their own part. Then when she keeps dying or doing horribly because they have no idea how to use her, they blame her. There's also a fad going around where hating popular things and being controversial is considered "cool."
I think people sleep on Ferdinand. Swift Strikes + Crest of Cichol + Lancefaire is nonsense kinds of good, and if you beeline for paladin, you can have that combo from pretty early on and it never becomes irrelevant.
I’ve seen several of Ranked Boost’s tier lists and I’m convinced they don’t actually play the games. I would say they’re randomized, but they at least put Byleth and the three lords in the top tiers.
I don't think the order of characters within tiers is meant to be a scale, I think they just go from Byleth to the Black Eagles to Blue Lions to Golden Deer

I would love to see you do a tier list, FED. If you do, please do one that includes the church units. IMO every unit is at least viable, the only unit that comes close to being just plain bad is Gilbert.

Caspar and Alois, probably. Gilbert as well. Ignatz learns Rally Speed/Dexterity/Strength so he's got some nice utility, and Cyril's Weapon Ranks allow him to easily become a Wyvern Lord, and starting with Point-Blank Volley means that, despite his bases, he doesn't struggle in netting kills as much as you'd think.

The only reason I can see anybody put lysithea at the bottom is because they’ve only done the edelgard route and decided not to kill her and she appeared in your team under leveled and poorly built. Either play golden deer or recruit her before the time skip
Finished Maddening on Silver Snow route, and I don't understand why Caspar is considered "bad." Literally everywhere I look people say he is one of the worst units in the game. I don't understand. Yes, Caspar bases felt maybe worst than the other units- actually just in speed; however, I'd argue that gauntlets are one of the better weapons (alongside magic and bows) in Maddening due to the high speed of enemies and most any character would die on a counter. Also, it's not like any Black Eagle member was doubling early in the game, including Petra. His personal ability of reducing enemy avoid and decent dex growth allowed him to be one of the few characters who could actually reliably hit anything too. Also despite Caspar's bad bases, Edelgard struggled more early game due to her shaky hit rate of 30-70%. She was amazing with gambits though.
She was my MVP in two separate playthroughs. First playthrough (Golden Deer) I made her an archer as a Pegasus Knight and she was able to do a lot of safe hit and runs that usually killed if I gave her a Silver Bow. Second playthrough (Blue Lions) her resistance was high enough that she almost single handedly carried my army through the big difficulty spike of final mission. She wasn't able to kill that playthrough without Brave weapons, but since she could reckless charge forward while my big damage dealers would all get wrecked by the mages, it was worth giving Brave to her. I played on Hard, not Maddening, so that might make a difference.
Lystihea is a must pick, slap the relic staff on her and it doesn't matter that she dies on one hit (if aegis/pasive doesn't proc) because odds are she's melting the enemy before they even breathe in her direction
I think tier lists for this game are pointless. Unless you’re a pretty serious about optimization, just use the units that you think are cool. Even in maddening it’s possible to beat the game with units that are “low tier.” For example Adam said Raphael was a low tier unit for him, but in my play throughs of the game, Raphael is one of my best units due to how I play the game and the strategies I like to use.
I think tiers lists for FE are pointless in general. There isn't an ultimate and more valid way to play the games. For example Sumia is the second best unit in Awakening Hard Mode in efficiency but in a kill-everything run, the second place easily goes to Tharja. Some says routing is the best one, some says ltc is the only valid one etc etc but that's personal bias
Tier lists are pointless in general. Seriously, I have yet to find a game where Tier lists were essential for properly doing anything within the game. But we make them anyway, because it's fun, and people love sharing their opinions.
I used to think Ferdinand was C tier at best, but recently (on maddening ng- too) went for a max defense build and he was a monster. The dodge tank Ferdinand people seem to do never worked out for me.
I just wanted to get this in the ether. What if we got a zelda/fire emblem cross over. Link, and Zelda as characters that can't die on any map. And Ganon as a final Boss. Instead of gambits there items like grappling hook that pulls in a unit from a space away, or bombs... etc. Idk what do you all think?
This seems like he played through Black Eagles only. When you get Lysithea in BE by saving her she isnt super good and dies pretty easily but still even if you just recruit her their she still snow balls hard and kills everything eventually so F still doesnt make sense.

Of all 18 members and byleth, only 6 of them he rated as C tier or lower. Saturating the top with characters and having an empty bottom kinda defeats the purpose of a curve.
I think I saw this, and they ranked people based on stat growths. But not RELEVANT stat growths, necessarily, just overall. So Lysithea has low growths in lots of things and comes in at the bottom, despite being LYSITHEA.
You should make a list, but seeing how generous you were to some of these guys, the constrict should be that only 3 people max per tier. Anyone worse drops lower. When you have limited space, you actually start to compare them against each other which is what a tier list should do.
I've never understood why people think Caspar is bad. I've had Caspar in all of my playthroughs and he has always been one of my best units, and one of the fastest.

I will admit that his speed does start out low, but that doesn't as much if you give him guantlets, and take down the grappler then war master path. Did they make Lysithea and armored knight or something? LOL in what world is she the worst unit in the game? There's absolutely a good argument that she's the best in the game but Im not sure I buy it. On Maddening she dies to a light breeze in the endgame. Luckily, she has Thyrsus to be a mile away from anything she attacks. She might one of the strongest units on the offensive but her lack of versatility on the defense can certainly he felt when you disposition her in Maddening. At the very least she's top of A to somewhere in S tier tho.
So because I didn’t want to make Lysithea TOO strong I gave Annette Thyrsus and made her a dark knight and she was literally KILLING it like definitely my mvp towards the end of the game

So I actually saw this and apparently that tier list is based on sum growth total, lysithea is great but her low growth rates in some of her stats means that her total stat growth total is fairly low, lorenz inversely is high because his strength and magic combined add up.
This also means HP, Luck, and Charm are considered equally important to Mag, Spd, and Def: which is dumb.
Mega Rotom Yeah, even with it being based on growth rates, this was terrible. Lysithea has an insane magic growth rate of 70%. From what I can tell, stat growth rates very rarely exceed 60% without there being something about the character that could justify it.

I'd argue that given that explanation... it's still a very bad tier list. Because ordering characters by that criteria is a terrible way to rank them and is useful to exactly zero people.

Man, I really think you are sleeping on Hilda. She's been one of my strongest units in both of my Golden Deer runs, including my current maddening mode run. On top of solid stats, she pretty often isn't counterattacked when using an art thanks to her crest, which makes Smash have a relatively high rate of safety between the chance of crit and chance of not being countered.

Her early game is not great at all. Shes a unit who takes time to get where she is. While others grow faster she needs a bit more time to get where people say she is
During maddening, her early game is OK. She shines the moment she gets to have a wyvern. Canto and her high damage really work well for her but without having canto she dies way too easy since her speed isn't top tier also because she uses axe.
Nobody really has a "good" early game in maddening, but if they did it would be Hilda. Being able to attack without being countered is really powerful if you utilize it. Move her first, use Smash, either one shot the enemy or see if crest procs, plan rest of turn accordingly and move guys next to her for attack boost.
Also, her speed growth is pretty dang good (50%), combined with her high strength to counteract the weight of axes. I just looked over my current golden deer team at around lvl 14 and she is tied with Byleth and Claude for second highest speed (I recruited Felix). She generally doubles with a training axe.
Her weakest aspect is her Dex, she misses on basic attacks vs sword dudes. Either way, a big part of any character's strength is using them to their potential... If you aren't doing that then you are going to think they are weaker than they are. For instance I actually thought Ignatz and Annette were worthless because I never considered the value of rally.

And if you mean her attack speed, she also has a base 45% strength stat, so after a few levels weapon weight wont even matter. If you really want to, put a little bit in heavy armor for weight -3

It bears mentioing that this tier list was released after each character's bases and growths were datamined ahead of the release of the game. Lysithea's placement is in large part due to her glass cannon growth patterns, and was made without reference to Thyrsus the Game Breaking Fun Stick and her two seals

Pretty sure this was out before the game came out or right at release. It’s so bad because as they state in the article it’s solely based on their total stat value. Lysithea is “evaluated” so poorly because she gets less overall stats but we know she’s so great because she gets them in the right place, along with having a broken relic for her crest, and among one of the best spell lists. Just goes to show that numbers aren’t everything.
We had spell list early. One look at her spell selection would make you realize she was good. Warp has been the best spell in the series longer than most players have been old enough to play the game.
Darrell Murray In addition to Warp, she is also the only magically inclined character who gets seraphim*, which is extremely useful against monsters. She also gets luna, the spell that pierces resistance.
*Yes, I know Edelgard gets it, but her unique classes are both stronger versions of the armor/fortress knight, and have no access to magic. You have to go out of your way to make her a mage.
The only good spell she gets is warp. Her other spells are 1-2 range
@@maverick5169 Seraphim and Dark Spear are good spells to have and she's the only way to get the latter on 3/4 routes. 1-2 range is only ever beaten by Thoron and magic weapons from the magic side.

I remember this tier list, it's the way it is because they add up their stats and rank everyone purely on the total. So Lysithea, who is dreadful in half the stats (which don't matter for her) is lowest.
This isn't to defend the tier list, it's a dreadful way to judge characters ofc. Excelling in a few stats is way better than having okay stats across the board. Lysithea and Petra are both easily top 5 (IMO they are top 2 in maddening) because they both excel at the most important stats.
On a separate point, I think Bernadetta is one tier above Ashe. Her personal really helps her damage output (especially early game) and Encloser is amazing for chip + support.

@@PockitGames Old comment but, Edelgard at base has a combined 385% growth rate, Dimitri has 375%. The problem is they are just looking at total growths. Dimitri has better growths in important stats (5% more str, 10% more speed, 5% more def) but Edelgard also has a 25% higher magic growth that neither unit cares the least bit about, but DOES contribute to her combined growth percentage.
Which really does show just another problem with this metric.
@@moonmelons yeah, thx for the correction. and we should indeed take into account all forms of play that a character brings, rather than look at straight values with little to no context. which is why someone like Sylvain is top tier, correct growts, correct combat arts and skills and easy avaiability with a useful crest.
I personally disagree with Bernadetta and Ashe being about equal.
Everyone always talks about how broken Bernadetta is but she has pretty terrible growth rates (aside speed/dex) and overall she doesn't do much for me, as much as I love her. For me, she never gets good until right before the endgame. Her accuracy is really shaky most of the time, even using Curved Shot and a training/iron bow against enemies that aren't particularly evasive or standing on an evasion tile. Her personal skill is really tricky because it's hard to let her get damaged without basically killing her due to low defense. She has a Crest so she takes no damage from Relics and has a weakness in both swords and axes so it takes a long time to train her to use a Devil Axe/Sword. So the only real way is to use it consistently is to either put her in danger constantly or get lucky by her gaining HP in a level up.
Ashe on the other hand has a personal locktouch skill and works well in almost any physical class you put him in. He's actually made a great War Master for me because the combination of his good speed and luck and ridiculous dexterity, he's able to get 4 hits in with gauntlets, will likely get at least one crit, and is pretty resilient to enemies that have higher crit rates. He's also fairly good as a Wyvern Rider/Lord too, since it plays to his strength in axes and hidden talent in lances. His strength issues can be fixed more easily due to Death Blow from Brigand and time in most axe classes due to his natural affinity for axes.
I'll admit Bernie's combat arts are way better than Ashe's though. Her budding talent is too. And the fact that she has a Crest and it allows her to double is pretty good, but it only has a 10% activation rate.
Bernadetta isn't a bad unit whatsoever but I find she really only does well if she's going through the archer or cavalier lines (or pegasus knight) unless you really take it upon yourself to train out her weaknesses. She's very good late into the game and amazing when she has The Inexhaustible but Ashe is very consistently good for me since the beginning due to his strengths playing into a variety of different paths he can go while Bernadetta has the most weaknesses along with Mercedes (and Lysithea if you don't unlock her hidden talent).
Inexhaustible directly conflicts with her Crest though, itd probably be better to just stick to killer/brave

Bernadetta is so good because she is extremely rng proof. She only needs a few hp and str growths and she can abuse the shit out of the combat art vengeance. Double lancefaire, death blow, defiant crit, defiant avoid, lance proficiency 5. I've had her vengeance art critting for around 300 damage at around level 40. That's Dimitri without crest proc levels of damage. Alternatively, you can build sniper on her, double bowfaire, hit +20, death blow, bow crit +10, bow proficiency 5, and spam hunters volley to deal lots of damage even with mediocre strength.
Also why is everyone sleeping on Ferdinand? He's directly comparable to Sylvain that everyone froths with the only difference being he's harder to recruit on non-CF routes but considering this is a general tier list and not a route specific one he should be up there with Sylvain.
Sylvain is the easiest unit to recruit, as well as having versatility being able to become a dark knight. Magic for armored units, swift strikes for low defense units. He is overall a bit more offensive than Ferdinand who is a bit more defensive. Sylvains personal makes him deal 3 more damage per hit when a female is nearby, which synergizes really well with Leonie, and his crest has a chance of boosting combat art damage. Meanwhile Ferdinand gets +Avoid at full hp, and his crest has a chance for combat arts to negate counter attacks. Over all though, I'd say both are amazing units when built properly. Both being good with axes means they can easily grab death blow, which boosts damage quite a bit on swift strikes.
Yeah Ferdinand requires heavy armor to recruit which is generally the worst thing to invest time in and the hardest to increase early game. And Sylvain has a better personal skill, Ferdinand has the opposite thing that Bernie has. But it's so easy to take damage that Ferdinand will almost never have it in effect

When I saw the lack of Lysithea at the beginning and the question mark in the thumbnail I was really hoping they just forgot Lysithea somehow.
I’m going to make a case here. Lysithea isn’t as good as people say. She is really really good, but not perfect. Her offenses are spectacular and white magic is amazing. She deletes the death knight, and warps like a madman
However, she has easily the worst defenses in the entire game. She can go down in one hit. She is a paper bazooka.

@@MicDISCO i would put byleth and the lords above her. she is certainly useful, but as you mentioned, she dies if an enemy as much as breathes in her general direction. she can delete any enemy she comes across, but you have to make sure she is not targeted by anyone as soon as enemy phase starts. IMO, that extra care needed hurts her status as the best unit in the game. you can put dimitri in the middle of the enemy team and watch him go to work. you cannot do the same with lysithea

On my playthrough of this game, Lysithea was one of my lowest level units because I tended to favor Byleth and Felix after I got him, like at the end of the game she was at level 20-something, and still came damn close to oneshotting the final boss on his defensive tile on hard. She's an absolute god.
Dmitri is the best unit in this game, period. It's borderline cheating how much damage he can deal. I'm no Lysethia fan, but she doesn't deserve to be last, she's just very niche IMHO. I usually prefer to have Annette or Lin doing the mage job, they deal with some damage better as I most often felt like she was taking the spot of better units for various situations (at least in the reckless way I play this game). Sylvain and Felix should be higher, they just work so great, all Blue Lions are awesome, even Dedue. As for Raph... I didn't manage to do anything good with him so far, I'm so sorry Raph, you are the last in row IMHO.
I guess we had very different experiences with Caspar. He was always very solid for me,even on Maddening.

Obviously, this isn't an accurate impression of how good the characters are, however.

Annette is also the crit queen. Her Dex growth is very high and she's got excalibur. It's why even though she's slow, it never mattered for me cause she would crit everything anyway.
Everybody sleepin' on my boy, Dedue. War master Dedue with gauntlets is a wrecking ball. Who needs 4 hits when you kill an enemy in 2? Not your thing? Go fortress knight Dedue for and absolute physical wall that baits enemies perfectly with his personal skill of +4 Def when just moving/waiting on a turn. Pair with brawling training to get a self heal that makes him an infinite physical wall. Magic is the only thing that stops him but that's what other units are for.
I've only done Hard so far so maybe Maddening changes this, but to me, he's A tier all day. Caspar too but he's more frail and the extra speed didn't make a huge difference to me between the two.

S Tier: Already if we are going by units, Edelgard's default class is an armor. Now yes you can put her into a riding or flying class but if you are trying to be quick, forcing those ranks on her can take just a bit too much time.
A tier: Claude being not in S just makes it automatically wrong, same with Dimitri. Atrocity for Dimitri is amazing and Claude has an amazing class and gets pass automatically.
B Tier: Hubert is really good. Only available on two routes but his spell list is basically like a male Lysithea's. Also he can be really speedy usually. Only flaw that I will say gets him at an inbetween is he thrives more as a Dark mage which is hard to get. Sylvain, Mercedes, and as much as I hate her character wise Leonie are A tier for sure. Lorenz is C tier because he is a mixed bag, because his strength and mag growths are the same.
C: All of that is just wrong.
D: Already the fact that Lysithea doesn't appear here tells me this person is an idiot.

I say Lysithea should be A tier , very good Spells nuking , but really can't take a hit physically. Low HP/DEF growth.
For a Average or Veteran she's Extremely good, but not sure if a Below than average player would think she that good.

I'm upset that you don't get Lorenz's timeskip outfit for Dark Knight nor Leonie's for Bow Knight.
I feel like Ignatz should be higher too: I agree with those rallies and he's debuff game is pretty strong. +20 personal and +20 from archer, he can actually reliably hit assassin's from 6 spaces away. If you're lucky to get some luck and dex boosters, then he can even crit from that range too.
I think it's kinda awkward that Edlegard can be a better mage than Dorothea when you look at growths and skills.
I really like Annette as a rally-bot too.
I love my armored units, but in maddening, Dedue and Raph struggle so much with the poison strike archers and the abundance of mages and they're slow so they get doubled by everything. Without NG+ to give them QR early, it's a really tough grind. But they're amazing enemy phase units in hard or normal
Amyr is why Edelgard is S tier. Galeforce was busted in Awakening, so they gave it to El 5 times in one bloody turn.

Banri Swirl The durability limits it to five times in a single battle, and it has to be repaired afterwards. In addition, iirc, Amyr is repaired using friggin’ *agarthum*, which is maddeningly rare. You can completely break one map, but you’re not gonna be using Amyr for awhile afterwards.

Dorothea’s easily B-tier or higher. She’s a perfect support character if you have her as a dancer, and works pretty damn well on the offensive if you train her enough in sword and reason. For every playthrough I’ve done, she’s been at least in my top five units.

Personally, I think Bernie can be in a comfortable spot in A tier because of her versatility. Take her on a few tea dates and boom, you've got a good dancer. Get her on a horse. Boom! She is among the better Bow Knights in the game. Her Crest is dummy broken, as it works with Brave Weapons, and her signature bow, The Inexhaustable, happens to be exactly that. She can also be among the better brawlers in the game as well. Super useful and best girl.
So basically:
every unit has its tactical niche and tier lists are mostly useless because good players will make their units work for them. The only exception is units that have clear advantages over the rest of the cast, usually the player character or second most plot- driving unit.
That's an unpopular opinion with multiple fallacies in it. Not every unit has a 'tactical niche'. There are units that are just objectively better than others. For example, if you want a dedicated archer on your team you would be better off recruiting Leonie and benching Ashe. Leveling up Ashe consumes XP and his personal ability, growths, and bases are completely eclipsed by Leonie, who will come at a higher level. This makes her a very high value recruitment option given the limited resources you have to recruit other units. Furthermore, you also present a false dichotomy by presenting tier lists as if there is a decision to be made between looking at them or being "good" at the game. There is no decision to be made. You can do both. Players who are "good" at the game tend to engage in discussion and analysis, which tier lists promote, so your point is fundamentally false about them being useless assuming you consider becoming "good" useful.
Dedue and Raphael make amazing gauntlet users which when attacking with those automatically doubles.

Golden deer first and Lysithea was just killing everything
the rank is made by their max total stats, not by how good they actually are. i dont agree with it, but its stated at the beginning of list.
Only through chapter 11 of my BL Maddening run but Dedue has been a godsend for me with his high defense and personal skill early game. I went through brigand and warrior/grappler and now he can pretty much one round anything but the tankiest units with Death Blow Gauntlets. Obviously not my best unit but vital to my playthrough for sure

Hm... Dedue practically CARRIES the BL Maddening run in the early game... Without him... It would hardly be possible, so FOR maddening... Dedue should be significantly higher.
Ingrid is good, but at least in my maddening (no NG+) playthrough sylvain and felix were better. Felix is just a speeddemon and putting thunderbrand on him killed literally anything in one hit.
For me, Raphaels crit Chance all of a sudden went to basically a constant 40 and he just crits like 4 times in a row
Ferdinand and Leonie teamed up as cavalry units mixed with Caspar as a Wyvern Lord made my playthrough fun af.
I think Bernadetta is much better that Ashe, their growths a similar but Bernadetta ability to deal 5 extra damage is much more useful than Ashe Locktouch or w/e it’s classes. Also Bernadetta has Indech crest which amazing to be able to attack with 3 basic attacks. What I think really makes Bernadetta one of the best bow knights is the fact that she get enclose which is hands down owe of the most useful abilities in the game. To me Ashe doesn’t compare at all

Am I the only one who had a just all right Lysithea like she was good and punked the death knight but she kept getting killed by flyers and even calvary units if she didn't have dark spikes equipped

If anything Bernadetta should be slightly higher than Ashe by virtue of having a better Personal Skill. Probably not enough to be different tiers, but placement within tiers.
Pass is underrated as her budding talent, her crest while unreliable helps her when it does. And she has a straight path to Bow knight
Absolutely. Her personal is pretty easy to activate, and her crest is not reliable but it there and is actually a worthwhile effect!

I think it was more the hype. Everyone hypes up Lysithea as being the best unit so then newbies who play the game expect her to solo the entire thing with zero strategy or skill on their own part. Then when she keeps dying or doing horribly because they have no idea how to use her, they blame her. There's also a fad going around where hating popular things and being controversial is considered "cool."
The website also recommends that the weapon Quake should be used for Lysithea. You know, that spell that's boss exclusive?

I think people sleep on Ferdinand. Swift Strikes + Crest of Cichol + Lancefaire is nonsense kinds of good, and if you beeline for paladin, you can have that combo from pretty early on and it never becomes irrelevant.
I’ve seen several of Ranked Boost’s tier lists and I’m convinced they don’t actually play the games. I would say they’re randomized, but they at least put Byleth and the three lords in the top tiers.
I don't think the order of characters within tiers is meant to be a scale, I think they just go from Byleth to the Black Eagles to Blue Lions to Golden Deer
Caspar was the reason I was able to beat my maddening run. But you’re right he’s so difficult to get good but once he’s got some momentum it’s uphill from there
I would love to see you do a tier list, FED. If you do, please do one that includes the church units. IMO every unit is at least viable, the only unit that comes close to being just plain bad is Gilbert.

On my first playthrough, which was black eagles, I saved and recruited her and thought she was bad, but when I played golden deer, I loved her.

So real talk, who are the worst units in the game? So far I’m guessing Caspar, Ignatz, Ferdinand, and some of the knights/faculty like Alois and Cyril?
Caspar and Alois, probably. Gilbert as well. Ignatz learns Rally Speed/Dexterity/Strength so he's got some nice utility, and Cyril's Weapon Ranks allow him to easily become a Wyvern Lord, and starting with Point-Blank Volley means that, despite his bases, he doesn't struggle in netting kills as much as you'd think.
Alois. His bases are cool but his avaiability isn't

The only reason I can see anybody put lysithea at the bottom is because they’ve only done the edelgard route and decided not to kill her and she appeared in your team under leveled and poorly built. Either play golden deer or recruit her before the time skip
Not to mention Lysethia has Dark Spikes T, that thing is broken
In my first playthrough of golden deer I thought that Lysithea was bad however I discovered how and why I was wrong near the end of the route.
Raphael was one of my best units as a grappler on my first play through
Bernadetta can learn Physic. I made her my main healer along with Dorothea who also has Physic.

Finished Maddening on Silver Snow route, and I don't understand why Caspar is considered "bad." Literally everywhere I look people say he is one of the worst units in the game. I don't understand.
Yes, Caspar bases felt maybe worst than the other units- actually just in speed; however, I'd argue that gauntlets are one of the better weapons (alongside magic and bows) in Maddening due to the high speed of enemies and most any character would die on a counter. Also, it's not like any Black Eagle member was doubling early in the game, including Petra. His personal ability of reducing enemy avoid and decent dex growth allowed him to be one of the few characters who could actually reliably hit anything too. Also despite Caspar's bad bases, Edelgard struggled more early game due to her shaky hit rate of 30-70%. She was amazing with gambits though.
If anyone out there got an Ingrid that was actually able to kill things in less than 3 hits, let me know, I don't know if it's possible.
She was my MVP in two separate playthroughs. First playthrough (Golden Deer) I made her an archer as a Pegasus Knight and she was able to do a lot of safe hit and runs that usually killed if I gave her a Silver Bow. Second playthrough (Blue Lions) her resistance was high enough that she almost single handedly carried my army through the big difficulty spike of final mission. She wasn't able to kill that playthrough without Brave weapons, but since she could reckless charge forward while my big damage dealers would all get wrecked by the mages, it was worth giving Brave to her. I played on Hard, not Maddening, so that might make a difference.
"Lysithea is a tier of her own" yes, and it's called Lysitiher.
Lystihea is a must pick, slap the relic staff on her and it doesn't matter that she dies on one hit (if aegis/pasive doesn't proc) because odds are she's melting the enemy before they even breathe in her direction
I think tier lists for this game are pointless. Unless you’re a pretty serious about optimization, just use the units that you think are cool. Even in maddening it’s possible to beat the game with units that are “low tier.” For example Adam said Raphael was a low tier unit for him, but in my play throughs of the game, Raphael is one of my best units due to how I play the game and the strategies I like to use.
I think tiers lists for FE are pointless in general.
There isn't an ultimate and more valid way to play the games. For example Sumia is the second best unit in Awakening Hard Mode in efficiency but in a kill-everything run, the second place easily goes to Tharja.
Some says routing is the best one, some says ltc is the only valid one etc etc but that's personal bias
Tier lists are pointless in general. Seriously, I have yet to find a game where Tier lists were essential for properly doing anything within the game. But we make them anyway, because it's fun, and people love sharing their opinions.
I used to think Ferdinand was C tier at best, but recently (on maddening ng- too) went for a max defense build and he was a monster. The dodge tank Ferdinand people seem to do never worked out for me.

This seems like he played through Black Eagles only. When you get Lysithea in BE by saving her she isnt super good and dies pretty easily but still even if you just recruit her their she still snow balls hard and kills everything eventually so F still doesnt make sense.

Of all 18 members and byleth, only 6 of them he rated as C tier or lower. Saturating the top with characters and having an empty bottom kinda defeats the purpose of a curve.
I think I saw this, and they ranked people based on stat growths. But not RELEVANT stat growths, necessarily, just overall. So Lysithea has low growths in lots of things and comes in at the bottom, despite being LYSITHEA.
You should make a list, but seeing how generous you were to some of these guys, the constrict should be that only 3 people max per tier. Anyone worse drops lower. When you have limited space, you actually start to compare them against each other which is what a tier list should do.
Is it an Argument to put Bernadetta higher than Ashe because she's especially good with the Bow that bear's the same crest as her?
Honestly 3 houses if I did a 3 houses tier list it wouldn't be who is good and who is bad ratings but how easy is it to get value in the unit
I've never understood why people think Caspar is bad. I've had Caspar in all of my playthroughs and he has always been one of my best units, and one of the fastest.
@@TwinPkVideos Yes its true I do like him, but that has never garunteed anyone on my team. I will admit that his speed does start out low, but that doesn't as much if you give him guantlets, and take down the grappler then war master path. If his speed gets too low, I turn him into a wyvern lord to increase both his speed and attack. Either way, Caspar turns into either a quading crit machine, or a hard hitting flier.

There's absolutely a good argument that she's the best in the game but Im not sure I buy it. On Maddening she dies to a light breeze in the endgame. Luckily, she has Thyrsus to be a mile away from anything she attacks. She might one of the strongest units on the offensive but her lack of versatility on the defense can certainly he felt when you disposition her in Maddening.
At the very least she's top of A to somewhere in S tier tho.
So because I didn’t want to make Lysithea TOO strong I gave Annette Thyrsus and made her a dark knight and she was literally KILLING it like definitely my mvp towards the end of the game
I gave Lysithea caduceus instead and she was still amazing and sniping people from all over
