John Craig, USPTA Elite Professional, discusses how to hit the ultimate kick serve.
Key takeaways:
To hit this kick serve, you must incorporate trajectory, spin, and speed(in that order) on your kick serve. Practice hitting kick serves as high as possible over the net and have the ball descend into the court. Practice this using the half serve. For spin, you need high racket speed and getting under the ball when you hit your serve. Use your full serve and practice hitting topspin on your serve. Lastly, try to put as much speed as possible on the serve.
On the technical side of this serve, make sure you are using the continental/hammer grip for your serve. The next key component to this is the ball toss. Make sure you are tosing your ball over your head so that it becomes more natural to swing up underneath the ball. Place your toss to the left and in front of you so you can attack forward and upward on it. The last key component is the contact point. You must make contact with the ball below your highest point of reach because you have to make contact with the ball where the racket head is still rising and ascending up into contact. The swing path for this will look very left to right. Imagine there is a wall in front of you and your racket must not penetrate the wall in front of you, but rather sweep alongside the wall. One more additional tip, pay attention to your elbow. Your elbow should stay behind you to allow the left to right swing action to really occur.

Thank you, Mike! Stay tuned for more great content coming your way!
This is one of the best videos on the kick serve! Thanks John.
Thanks Henry! Best, John
Your mention of topspin several times for the kick serve in this clip produced a light bulb moment for me. Visualise doing a forehand topspin on your kick serve and that tells me I have to swing the racket upwards to get the topspin. With this visualisation when you swing upwards you will stay sideways to the net and your elbow will remain behind you. Wow! Thanks Greg for this awakening! You are a great coach!
HI Laurence, Thank you for your comments and kind words. I am so glad my instruction is helping you play better tennis! Take care and stay in touch! Kindly, John
Love all your videos! They are so informative and useful. Thank you so much ❤
Thanks so much! I am pleased to know they are helpful to you!
Love the idea of the swing path tracing a wall we don't want to penetrate. Going to try that against a fence and see if I can reproduce on the court. Thanks!

Great video! Is there a slice serve video?
Hi Francis, Thank you! No, we do not have a video specifically on the slice, but we will make one soon!
First , thank you for your efforts to simplify tennis for the masses. Please correct my summary of your serves tips and course: Flat serve - Elbow leading; Kick serve - Elbow behind; Slice serve - Elbow ???, parallel !!!. Thanks.
Hi Samuel, Thank you for your kind comment. You are correct about the elbow positions on the flat and kick serves. The elbow also leads on the slice. FYI, my system of teaching focuses on 5 key principles that every high performance player has developed - these 5 principles are universal, as they can be applied to every stroke, which really does simplify the technical/ physical component of tennis, and allows a player to grow and achieve their full potential. Stay tuned as this program is set to be presented soon! Thanks, John
Good instruction on a top spin serve, but I never saw the serve kick out wide
Hi Glen, That's an "American Twist", and unfortunately I don't have the range of motion to create that affect on the ball anymore. But I can kick it straight! Best, John

Good vid coach. How to prevent shank in kick serve?
Munzir Purba Focus more on trajectory than excessive spin
@@PerformancePlusTennis thank you.
Hi John, do you still use pronation if you swing to the side? Or is the spin coming from the angle hitting the ball from 7 to 2?
Hi Alex, Yes, long-axis pronation will be a natural consequence of the outward swing, regardless of the spin you are attempting the play. Thanks, John
Is the racquet angle slightly closed at contact?
Hi, the racquet can feel slightly closed at contact, and it could be slightly closed. It certainly is not open. Best, John
Hi John, good tips. Is this at the Newport Beach tennis club?
quinby123 Hi, Yes this is the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
