  • Body Search & Recovery Operation In Swift Water
    This video is from the Point of View of the Public Safety Diver / Under Water Criminal Investigator.
    Recently, our Public Safety Dive Team was asked to assist with the search for a missing persons in a local river in the mountains. Due to the environmental conditions of the river, a basic operation became an extensive one, utilizing our dive team for over 2 days. The current of the water, which averaged 2 knots to 5 knots made it difficult for our Public Safety Divers and Under Water Criminal Investigators to do a thorough search of the area. High lines were ran to stabilize the vessel so that operations could be ran from the boat vs off the shore. After a very extensive search, including the use of side scan sonar, the victim was not found. Approximately 2 weeks after the search, the victim was located over a mile away from the area that the victim was last seen in. Through the coordination of multiple Public Safety Organizations, all rescuers were safe. Public Safety Diving and Under Water Criminal Investigations is a specialized field of diving and takes many hours of training to master. Our Public Safety Divers are also Public Servants in our local communities including, Police, Fire, EMS, Rescue, and Military.
    Here is the original News Cast from the incident.

      well Ma'am, I can't speak from the experience of a diver and finding a body, But, I can speak as a Professional Firefighter......... and unfortunately finding one in a structure fire. It haunts you. The victim was missed in the primary search. please keep in mind that the primary search is fast in nature, we're not only trying to extinguish the fire, but search for possible people inside at the same time. the conditions are terrible, and very violent, the smoke is unbelievable, visibility is near zero, you can't see your hand in front of your face. plus the temperatures, a couch gives off 500,000 BTU's, a recliner gives off 350,000. during the secondary search is when we found the victim, wedged between a wall and a bed. we immediately notified our IC( Incident commander) and Marked the location, we changed our air bottles( we were both out of air, because a 30 minute cylinder actually lasts between 12-15 minutes, and when that low pressure alarm goes off and it "dings" you have roughly 3-4 minutes of air, SOP is half the cylinder in, half the cylinder out, but we push that limit and at the Ding, we start skip breathing) and went back in, which is actually against NFPA regs, it's usually two bottles and you're in rehab re-hydrating and cooling off, my partner and I decided after getting the ok from the IC to go back in, and placed the victim in a body bag, and we both carried the victim out where we met the coroner. it was very sad, and is emotional, but being in emergency services, I can tell you that you have to shut that part of you off to do your job. This is why there are crisis counselors in emergency services now, even Priests and Pastors, and I am not ashamed that I have spoken to a few over my many years in the Fire Service, was even put on a leave of absence once because one call we had really messed with me and still haunts me to this day. I will say though, between Emergency services and Rescue Divers, we do it because regardless, the people deserve to be found and laid to rest and honored. I actually love being a Firefighter, I get to help people, one way or the other, and that's what it's really all about. any shift that we do our best, is a good shift.

      @@jackgrant4795 God bless YOU for what YOU do, as well!! It's a 'necessary evil,' I guess! We HAVE to have ppl that are able to shut their OWN minds OFF, just to bail the rest of us out when we do something stupid, or when something horrible happens! :( I've had EMT training & have been the first person to come upon an accident scene, or the first person with any training, to get there! It's automatic! I won't go into detail here, as it would be a NOVEL, but, at most of the scenes, taking charge, calming ppl down, dealing with the medical issues/emergencies professionally, while including bystanders, putting everyone at ease & even making the 'victim' laugh while I'm working on him (for lack of a better term!) has been my 'favorite' memory so far! Late night, car in median, upside down, fully engulfed in flames, 3 victims of whom had been dragged out of the car by 3 young, male bystanders! Most serious was a head wound (that's Louis & the one I was attending to!); Head bandaged; a passenger was sitting next to Louis, stated his collarbone was broken; He was holding Louis' hand; he collapsed sideways; the roads were solid ice, with sleet coming down; I got the passenger to sit back up & stay conscious, wrapped my coat around him & finished with Louis; Kept him conscious & talking; Ambulance FINALLY got there! I was able to tell the EMT right away that they better get a chopper in the air, because of the seriousness of this head wound! Thankfully, she didn't question it! Chopped was called! It landed right on the interstate! After an hour and a half of laying nearly prone, on the ice, no coat on, I helped load Louis for transport; they asked me to help get him over the guardrails, but I had to tell them that I couldn't because I couldn't feel my legs!lol. I had just worked 16 hours!lol. I got a letter from the ambulance service, but was never able to find out how Louis was & how his recovery went!

    Ask any diver or first responder, it's the children that you never forget. I still think of those children you see their pictures then their deceased faces(if any of it is left)that's what hurts,waking up in the middle of the night crying or the dreams you have about them.Im 47 now and I have a six year old I see their faces in him and I'm very over protective,I shouldn't be but I can't help it,I can't talk to anyone about it but I can tell complete strangers because you don't know me not a day goes by I don't think of them I always pray for them my life will never be like it once was but I hope I did something good in life and the families can have peace please protect your babies and put your faith in God and be a good person and help others Love to all from Tennessee Cherokee Nation

      Erik Golden, In a situation like this one, I am contracted through several Public Safety Departments, one being the Fire Department, which I am a member of, and another being our local Sheriff's Office, for which I am a former Deputy Sheriff. I work through a mutual aid agreement for other Law Enforcement and Fire Departments when needed. Mostly this type of work is on volunteer basis. As far as doing normal salvage work or search and recovery for lost items, the individual who lost the item will pay us for the search.

    • @erikgolden3242

      LakeHickoryScuba So you would need a team of about how many people?

    • @LakeHickoryScuba
      @LakeHickoryScuba  7 років тому +4

      Erik Golden, on this particular search we had two divers in the water, with a tender per diver, and two divers on land as safety. Ideally, a team needs 6 to 8 divers. Unfortunately, volunteer teams don't have that luxury, even if they did, there is no guarantee all members can respond.

The other sounds prideful, but we truly have limited resources here in our area, and since we have the Knowledge, Skills, Equipment, and Experience to do it, we have decided to give back to our community by using our talents to help others.

      On this particular search, we were searching a back and forth the channel, and were being controlled by the personnel on the boat. The tenders would simply let out line as needed, and the boat was being controlled by a high line. It would get pulled across the channel as we swept side to side. Then the tenders would let a said amount of line out, and the boat would be pulled back across, allowing us to sweep in the opposite direction.

    Are those the Mares Power Plana fins? Am looking for more rugged fins for work yet lighter for travel, they seem more suitable than jetfins

    • @LakeHickoryScuba
      @LakeHickoryScuba  6 років тому

      Yes, I am using the Mares Power Plana Fins in this video. For Public Safety Diving and Salvage Diving, they work great. They are actually short enough for me to safely walk in them (I should clarify the word ME, I don't encourage anyone to try walking while wearing fins). They are extremely rugged and durable. As far as traveling, at least by airplane, just one of the fins come in at 3 pounds, and that is without a buckle strap, bungee strap, or spring strap system. They are really kind of on the heavy side.

      The Force Fins should work just fine. I prefer a much shorter fin for PSD work, which the Force Fins tend to be short. As long as they provide enough propulsion for you, I would say yes, they will be just fine.

    Lets waste 10 mins of dive time by wearing a full face mask above water & then not doing a basic buddy check before the dive. Basic basic diving.

    • @LakeHickoryScuba
      @LakeHickoryScuba  7 років тому +28

      Thank you for the concern. We do believe safety is the most important part. That is why we use Surface Air Valves on all of our Full Face Mask while at the surface, so that we do not waste our air supply while gearing up. On dives like this, RECOVERY not RESCUE, gear checks are done 3 different times, since time is not an issue. Once while setting up, once as we are gearing up, and lastly once again by our tenders just prior to descending. Also as you can see in the video, we will adjust any and all equipment if needed in the water. This was our third dive of the day, and had already done our safety checks prior to starting the camera. There are a lot of things the camera itself doesn't see behind the scenes. Once again, Thank You for your concern for our team members.

    • @andyneal8271
      @andyneal8271 7 років тому

      Yes i guess like not seeing the surface air supply. Witch is why the comment was made your breathing from the tanks on your back. Not from SAS. Also normally with SAS you have coms as well. Standard Rescue/Recovery diving practice for Police Rescue for the UK.As is Video Recording for any coroners court if a body is found.

    • @viburnumwillow4669
      @viburnumwillow4669 7 років тому +3

      Andy Neal Chill man, they might breath with SAS at the surface, you probably just cant see it in the video. Besides you can her when tank air is being supplied versus when there breathing vented, or through a SAS. Also this isn't in the UK, so standards are probably different, they may not need a communications system for a report they may just type one, or something. Like they said there checks were probably done before the camera was turned on, most times when things are being filmed, just for time saving purposes, they won't turn there cameras on. Also I don't want to be mean, but I actually had a little trouble reading your comment. You need to have better grammar, capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. Just saying.
      Not trying to be mean. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @LakeHickoryScuba
      @LakeHickoryScuba  7 років тому +4

      Andy Neal Not sure where the confusion is coming from, but we are not using Surface Supplied Air, we are breathing from our tanks. However, we are utilizing SURFACE AIR VALVES that allow us to breathe normal atmospheric air while at the surface, and conserve the air in our tanks. A simple turn of the valve shuts the valve and tank air is transferred into the mask. Just prior to us descending, you can here us shut our valves and you will here the air flow into the mask. Thank you for all your comments.
