I got a question. How does companies look at one if you use keyshot? Are one expected to be able to make the same great results with renders like Vray or Mental Ray on their own?? Tweaking and trying to get the materials and lightning and all the remder settings right is still a big confusion for me... With keyshot it looks so easy.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You are great at explaining the steps! Seriously helping me regain faith that I can pass my Modeling class. Geometry wasn't really ever my thing but this makes sense!
Thanks for this tutorial Mike, and thanks for being awesome you are such a help, hopefully if the project I wanna make this for pays off will be able to show you how your help paid off :)
Like medieval armor an example. Something with difficult and different forms. Very interesting, how your make UV for texturing this. And if your prepare models for videogames how your make it, i'm newbie in this work.
hey mike i'm really stuck here and i hope u can help me, can u do a tutorial about how to do a light emitter object in renderman ( lightbulb, neon light, ... ) i cant seem to find aby tutorial about that in the new renderman
Another great tutorial Mike. I'm having an issue with the rope around the outside. My cylinder wont extrude around the curve, it only extrudes in a straight line. I added more divisions and it just won't follow the curve. Poly cylinder and a nurbs curve right?
Hi Mike. Great Tutorial again. Unfortunately I am stuck with the rope extrusion. I can select all four faces of the rope cross section but I can't sellect the curve after that. I am holding Shift but it just does not work out. And when I switch from Face mode to Object mode (to select the curve), the face selection disappears. It's a wierd problem, I tried to find the solution on the internet but nothing was helpful.
i am having issues with the rope too. i read the comments and tried it all but still isnt working for me. i grouped the cylinder faces together, right clicked face mode, shift selected the curve.... set divisions to 200... and it only extrudes in a straight line. please help me? thanks!
Hello! I have a question about Maya texture. So, I download a character from a website. To be more specific, a rigged character that has it's own texture. The problem I am having is how in the world can I apply the texture to the character. For example, the pants, skin, etc. I looked for some tutorial but I keep finding videos showing you how to texture it yourself but nothing on how to apply the texture that came with the character.
Mike Hermes I think I managed to figure out how to apply it. I went to hypershade and then add the images to the color option for each part of the model.
Mike Hermes Hello again! I just encounter another problem. I am trying to move a character from the original position to another but every time I drag the arrow to move, Maya completely stops responding. It doesn't even shows anything. I can move the mouse but nothing can't be done except force-quit the program.
Yeah, I saw that later on :) You have very helpful stuff, they're very good. One question though, I must UV Unwrap my models in order to paint them in substance painter, right? The painter paints shaders, not models. Did I get that right?
Super late reply haha but yes you have to UV unwrap your model before you can paint it in any program that can export said textures. Substance painter aswell as other 3D texturing packages paint on top of the UVs which is not in 3D space it is a 2D image that's why you UV so you have 2D space to paint on. Hope that made sense!
Quality getting better and better
Thanks Jonathan, I do my best

I think the MH in your logo can be a little smaller or basically use the "MH" in your intro as a logo

Did you select the face in face more or object mode ?
Object mode. I'll figure this out yet, lol. Love a challenge.
Select the face in face mode, shift select the curve and extrude ( with enough subdiv )
Thanks, I just figured that out. Hey, I can do a tutorial on 50 Ways to do it Wrong, lol! Great tutorial Mike, thanks again!

Apply a new lambert to the entire character. Then plug the texture file into the diffuse node
Mike Hermes I think I managed to figure out how to apply it. I went to hypershade and then add the images to the color option for each part of the model.
Yep, that is exactly what I said :-)
Mike Hermes Thank you.

How you separate parts of shield? Maybe not necessary to combine?
If you don't want to combine you could group ( Ctrl+G )
+1 "UV mapping videos would be nice :)"
I typically don not do that on screen as I have a playlist with 30+ videos on that topic
