Garrett, you're a genuine inspiration to both young and old. It's an incredibly brave and challenging thing you're doing and I wish you all the best for the remainder of your adventure.
Garrett, I am certainly enjoying reliving my 1977-79 singlehanded voyage through you. I'm an old man now, can no longer do what you are doing (and am glad to have missed the rogue wave that surprised you!). Aitutaki was one of my very favorite anchorages for the reasons you mention: the people speak English, are extraordinarily friendly, food was inexpensive, and if you dive around the outside reefs, the diving is spectacular! There are a couple of old sunken whaling ships on the south side of the perimeter reef (nothing really left now) that struck the reef during the mid 1800's and you will find some of the crewmembers buried in the church graveyard with interesting markers. Diving at the mouth of the entrance pass should reveal a lot of huge groupers (and some sharks) but make sure you go with someone in a dinghy to make sure you get back! I am wishing you fair winds on your trip to Tonga.
@@skaraborgcraft No, he said that he needs it to charge his batteries (computer, starlink, etc.). Plus his boat neighbor is letting him borrow his generator. Go look for conspiracies elsewhere, Garrett keeps it real.
@@vorpalmotors What? What conspiricies? Im glad for him to be living his dream. My perspective is from doing the same in a time of pre-internet and engineless. I find it amusing that someone carries a generator, so they can have internet access....thats all. Call me an old fuddy duddy if you will.
I got up and went to work this morning just as I have since 1987. I definitely chose the wrong path way back then. There is life and then there is LIFE. This young man understands what living should be about.
I like the drone perspective of you running aground. Can't believe you were able to multi task this while navigating a new harbor single handled. Good stuff, thanks.
So glad you made it to Aitutaki, one of my favorite places. Quite awhile ago I was allowed on the supply ship at Raratonga for passage to Aitutaki. Had a great time on deck with all the locals. On board was a small sailboat with a glass bottom. Since the supply ship had to remain outside the reef the sailboat needed to be sailed into the lagoon and I was the only person able to do it. The locals were so kind to me for that. They were practicing their dancing at night for a major competition. So I got to learn real Polynesian dancing. At night huge numbers of red crabs would come out on the roads. At the far end of the island there is an archeological site where cannibalism was once practiced. Very eerie. Vincent
Keep going Garrett, you'll do OK.....at some point, you'll meet a good sailing soul mate, be prepared to fully share and you should be fine. You'll continue to meet interesting people . Life, as you're finding out, is a journey........
Sorry to hear about the wave but glad you made it safely. The lagoon at Aitutaki is awesome especially the white sand near one foot island. Excited to see what you find when you explore. I was there a couple times back in the late 90s. The people of the Cook Islands were so welcoming and friendly. I'm glad to hear they appear to still be that way. Enjoy and thanks for sharing.
Thanks Maybe towards repair of generator or whatever is needed. Good luck young man, doing amazing things. Example yo many young people to take on your dreams.🎉
Maybe a LiPo4 battery bank and more solar and wind turbines to charge it instead of a generator? Motors are a pain to maintain and you always have to hope they work. Great videos! Thank you for your time and effort putting this quality content together for us
Thanks UA-cam algorithm! Mate, Aitutaki is a special place, some real legends there, hope you find the Koru cafe, if you like coffee it’s the best. I spent 4 seasons working on the island, met a few sailors travelling through, always blew my mind on the courage to do it. I was told a story by the Aitutaki mayor over a few brewskis of a man that was found talking nonsense on one of the tiny outer islands in the lagoon of Aitutaki, the men that found this man assumed he was drunk and they put him in the local lock up, the next day the realised he was speaking a different language, they then found a tiny fishing boat flipped on the outer reef, that bloke was actually from Tahiti, had been out fishing, motor died, storm came through and blew him out to sea, then spent 5 months drifting in the currents and landed on the island, his family had a funeral and everything. I was blown away thinking no way, but low and behold it’s true! Sound like it’s not the way you are heading I highly recommend Rarotonga, if you want that majestic landscape, similar vibe little bit more touristy as just way bigger, people just a nice! Safe travels dude!
Hi Garrett, thanks for sharing mate. Interesting to a land lumber to see how things pan out, Rouge wave is scary. I am also following my mate barry on his boat ma kai, who is heading from nz to Fiji, be funny if you run into him. Frost here in the south island nz. Barry and I met through ham radio. Take it easy mate, hope the new Gen works well for you, must be a constant battle against salt all the time. Cheers : brian.
So sorry about your generator and the wave that caused all this. I suppose that's life at sea which can be pretty unpredictable. Great video again taking us to incredible places. Thanks for sharing your life with us. Keep well and safe. James.
Awesome video man watching you sail q baot made me want one and I have been looking for one to get so I can sail it around the world because that's something I've always wanted to do is see the world and you help Mr figure out how I can do it so thank you for everything keep up the great work man

about your acne I had the same kind of problems when I was young and I was allergic to milk and some of its derivatives, chocolate etc. I stopped and the problems disappeared.. you have to find exactly what types of food your body does not digest, can be butter and or excess oils in cooking (then use margarine), it can also be certain meats such as fried pork, saussage, eggs which Americans are fond of for breakfast ..You have to do many tests and see the results on your skin but milk, yogurt, chocolate, sweet cakes, dry cake and sweets , fried food are often to blame ( lots of sugars in some sodas..) . the idea is one week you stop completly milk and cheese , one week another thing etc. .Sometime food you like the much is the one who makes energy and digestive issues in your body .
Garrett…..sorry about your generator…no doubt you’ll get it fixed or get a new one like you want! Maybe the hatch should always be closed if you’re not inside…pain in the ass but so is your stuff and the inside drenched! That curry looked awesome! Have a great day!
Great update vid, on the only sailing channel I've found that's just authentic and no annoying drama and bs. Too bad about the generator, but it might be fixable in time as a backup or for parts.
Am following You Garrett, am so Happy You have visited my Birth Place of Aitutaki and pronounce it pretty good as well. Hope You enjoy whatever little stay You have on Aitutaki Brother. Safe Travels. Stay Blessed, Stay Safe ❤
Garret, watching your videos made me feel like you are my buddy and I am checking with you from time to time whenever you share a video. About your acnes. Yes, it’s good that you are following a strict diet but I think your situation requires external applications as well. Try to pick up some face washes/creams for acne-prone skin. They will speed up the healing process. I hope in the next video your generator problem will be solved. I am happy to see you have even more Patreon supporters now! Also, this was another great video! Stay safe!
I had to do a double take when you paid for your groceries. The New Zealand $20 bill is almost identical to the Canadian $ 20. First thing I thought when your generator got dunked was what if you put it in a big garbage bag when you are not using it. Might prevent something like that happening again. Enjoy your time there sounds like you landed in a nice place.
I'm really sorry about your generator and know how it feels to lose one. Late at night my plug on my Honda generator got fouled but being half asleep after cleaning it I stripped the threads trying to put it back in. Thinking I could just drill it out and insert a new thread coil I forgot to lower the piston and put the drill right through it. Unfortunately you can't just replace the head, you have to replace the entire engine case! Fortunately the parts are cheap, but unfortunately it's a major project. Yep, sailing life.
Me and my brother went to aitutaki in December, its so neat seeing you go to some of the stores we bike over to from paradise cove. if you get more time id recommend you to rent a bike and go to ootu beach past the airport. May the wind be in your favor.
I also struggled with acne at your age, drink plenty of water (divide your body weight in half, that number is how many ounces of water you should be consuming each day for optimum hydration) and a few minutes of direct sunlight each day will brighten your spirits. You will eventually grow out of the acne stage and soon enough will be able to eat everything and anything you want. ~tyfs~!
The ups and downs of travelling, especially like this on the sea! Nice that you enjoy Aitutaki a bit better, enjoy the company and being able to speak to people haha
Love this channel ! Subbed. don't know how you got the balls to do this trip, entirely alone, on a relatively small boat, across a vast ocean susceptible to incredible power of nature and frequented with reefs and hazards. I mean what happens if you get appendicitis half way between Bora Bora and Aitutaki, you're alone and its blowing 35 knots??!! I envy your courage to be honest with you. What is the secret to under taking such a journey???!!
Hang in there and hope the generator thing works out. It will be better than before. Have to up my support level ;-D Happy sailing and looking forward to your next video.
Garrett, you're a genuine inspiration to both young and old. It's an incredibly brave and challenging thing you're doing and I wish you all the best for the remainder of your adventure.
The best sailing channel I've found. This is actual "reality television" because you keep it real. Thanks for letting us adventure alongside you.
Hope this helps towards the generator and veggies. I’m enjoying your adventure. 🩷

So refreshing to see actual sailing channels. Everyone starting channels trying to make them all theatrical.
Do you not see the irony? Damaged my generator, need it to power starlink, so that i can upload videos.......

those channels are not mean to be "just" sailing channels, and you are not their intended audience. No reason to be disgruntled about it.
You are my favorite sailor on UA-cam, please please keep at it it’s so amazing and relaxing to watch you

something to be said for routine and stability as well
Smashed by a rogue wave. "So lame".
Garrett - master of the understatement!!
Love that you include "Mom" at the top list of your supporters. Love this channel man. Living your adventure with you. Stay safe brother.
Im a supporter on Patreon but consider a gofundme as needed! We could replace the generator quickly.
You’re a total badass. How you manage to keep that thing afloat with the massive balls you’re carrying onboard is amazing

Honda generator will be fine. Remove the shell and rinse with fresh water. Pull spark plug, pull cord 3x, put plug back in. Change oil and go.
Clean every electrical connector you can and use dielectric grease on connections if you have some.
