My students (5th grade) and I are enjoying your adventures immensely. If you could say hello to them, that would really be a rush. You are a quite an exceptional role model for them! Thank you for being so strong in character. We wish you the best in life.
would love to hear a little history about you- how old when you learned to sail- did your parents teach you and do they both do long sailing trips? Did you grow up on Oahu near the water? does anyone else (siblings?) sail? was there any pressure to go a conventional career route? You're a water person for sure! If someone dropped you in the desert and said you had to live there, doubt you would last for long..🏜 Thank you for awesome videos!
Ran into your videos randomly, i dont sail and am petrefied of deep ocean. Ive been binging and I cant believe these videos dont have more views. Your passion and patience are incredible. I hope success and happiness continue - 25 year old on land
It's much better to bolt plates together than weld. If you could get the best welds, corrosion between the layers is going to build up and heave like ice. Pitting and white powder only catches more salt. If you bolt, you can paint or tar the inside layers and renew it when needed. Your plates are like my motor mounts. I trim off round corners. You could get launched by a wave and cut your foot or something else. It's called " friendly roundness" or it's called " baby safe". I'd carry a header tank for the diesel. If your big tank starts taking water, you could purify it in advance and transfer it underway. I often place a thin sheet of plywood under batteries, and whatever cushioning is needed. I had a brand new Diehard get shredded once. Don't trust your main water tank for drinking. Carry lots of files and a one sided hacksaw in case brackets get broken on trips. With tools, you can fake that you used a machine shop. You might start casting your own zincs. The big ones get expensive. Zinc is free when a washing machine breaks. Always carry extra limes.
Merry Chiristmas! Enjoy your time with the family. I question, how in the world has anyone your age learned so much about sailing and doing the maintenance on your boat. It is incredible!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you Garrett. I see things are moving along nicely and I pray that 2025 will offer up some good opportunities in the water. Good hunting and fair winds.
Happy holidays! Half a foot of snow outside and I have teak to sand while I wait to put her back in come spring. Fortunately removable parts from the warmth of home! And some sail repair, making some new sailbags and fixing rips in old ones, ordering zippers for bimini replacement panels, getting replacement spinnaker lines and putting eyes on them, tying a few more soft shackles, finishing some coding to integrate new coulometers into my boat, even in the off season there's so much to do.
Man, it’s beautiful over there and I would love to go over there. I’m here in Florida. I was just scrolling through and seen your video and haven’t seen them before I’ll be watching more.
No need for a vent tube on you dripless shaft seal. You can burp it when you splash or sny time, it won't get air bound with a displacement hull. your diesel doesn't produce enough rpm to cause a problem, but you probably know that.
Merry Christmas Garrett 🌲 As a soon to be solo sailor I think there are no small topics. Many small random seemingly innocuous stuff may come up and it’s builds the knowledge base. So for me it’s not boring, but rather relaxing to see you covering the odd bits. I’ve never seen a windlass mounted above deck on a separate plate. Doesn’t that impede the foresail foot? Cheers! I look forward for your next video. Fair winds and following seas. ⛵️
Is anyone in your family an experienced sailor? Have they ever done a voyage like yours? At the dinner table, did your parents brag about your month-long voyage? I’m curious how that conversation went-was it as spectacular to them as it feels to us viewers, or is this kind of thing common in your family? Finally, how did your mom feel about you taking that voyage? Was she scared? And when your phone broke and you went MIA for two weeks, how did your family react when you finally messaged them and they found out you were okay? I hope you see this and appreciate you taking time to read it
You can search for marinas in different countries and look up their rates: it's calling a "haulout", usually sold with the return. For Garrett's boat size I found rates from US$180 to US$350 at different Fiji marinas, the upper end not that different from U.S. prices. Often that includes, say, a week's storage on land, but you have to pay for that too if it's not included or you need a longer haulout.
Lewmar recommends at least 8 gauge, or no more than 10% voltage drop. A 27A (and that's a small one not being loaded strongly) windlass and 25' run can meet that with 8AWG wire, but some windlasses use four times or more current. A lot of people use minimum 4AWG on theirs. Whoever put in the one on my older boat used 2AWG!
My dear young Skipper, going around the world all Teak on the main deck, gunwale, and grabrail carry Teak oil to waterproof the wood and prevent leaks into the wood, applying varnish is aesthetic but not durable. This way you save money, an oil that you can use and does the same job is raw linseed oil, not boiled. P.S. Before you get to work, you need to make sure you have EVERYTHING. Good Luck 👌

Leave him some privacy, nobody needs to know everything about him.
Sometimes when I'm having a bad day I'll wonder what Garrett is doing on the other side of the world on the ocean. Always wishing you the best.
Hahaha same! Thought I was the only one :)

Great videos.
I'm wondering what they charge you to take the boat in and out of the water?

Merry Christmas. Have a great year in 2025 and bring us along for the ride!
Ten gauge wire is about right for the windlass, as long as it's not a really long run.
