Vietnamese traditional costume "Áo Dài" + other East Asian traditional costumes

  • This video is mainly about the Vietnamese traditional costume "Áo Dài". The viewer of this video will see that the Vietnamese traditional costume isn't just simple and plain like a normal white girl's school uniform but that it also can look different than what they are used to see in media and on the streets in Vietnam. Its traditional/royal form is called the "Áo (Dài) Mệnh Phụ" which looks way more fancy and prettier than the modern one.
    At the end of the video all traditional costumes from the so called "East Asian cultural sphere" or as known as the "Sinosphere" are shown together. Each one has its distinct characteristics and all of them are pretty in their own way.

      Soon after North Vietnam expanded its territory to the south, dominating Champa land and part of the Khmer (Cambodia). As a result, Vietnam's territory is now more than half located in Southeast Asia. A long time ago, Vietnam was on top, part of East Asia! And now Vietnamese people are East Asians living in Southeast Asia. But Vietnamese want to be a part of Southeast Asia in the future because they want to be an Asean leader. Right? :)))

I just did the video for the Aodai because I find it sad that Vietnam is always overshadowed by the other 3 countries. Some people are just too narrow minded to understand that Vietnam is just geographically SEA but culturally EA which counts more in my opinion.

      Well, not really. South Korean men who live in a village can't find any Korean women to marry because they don't want a poor husband. Moreover, the birth rate in South Korea is very low and Korean women are too focused on their career. So poor South Korean men marry poor Vietnamese women through so called marriage agencies. Koreans need more offsprings for their country so they attract poor Vietnamese women with a "better" life in South Korea by offering them for example free plane tickets so they can come back home to Vietnam frequently. It's like a give and take for both sides. It's not illegal but sad because it gives Vietnam a bad image like how you've been brainwashed by those information. Btw, my parents aren't like that. They met in an international foreign school. However, nowadays globalization can't stop international marriages though...

I just want to say to the people that are saying Vietnam is week and poor, over these years and years and years of war and battles against bigger countries, we are still standing. THAT IS WHAT MAKES A STRONG AND WEALTHY COUNTRY, NOT IN MONEY INSTANCES. Over the 90's we were considered a poor place, but look, we've learned, we've grew and is still growing. If you "hate„ such a country, *it's your loss and it isn't ours.* I love all my countries, China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam! cam on Bánh.

This explains why! *Missing the coat, and sometimes we are lazy to wear the headress. That is amazing when I was in China I didn't see a lot of Viet stuff but since I came to the US I just love everything about Vietnam!:) P.S. No offense but Viet accent is the only thing that I can't get used to, it sounds weird to me just like Cantonese or Thai. I think Malay is my favorite SE Asian accent.
    P.P.S. Now in China Cheongsam/Qipao is more accepted as the official costume instead of Hanfu. In the ancient times, many tribes took control of China, the last of them is Manchurian, who is the origin of Cheongsam. Since it is Hanfu to be the orthodox costume of Han(the majority of Chinese, the same as Kinh in Vietnam), in these years it has started to revive

    • @ddoublevdvv7111
      @ddoublevdvv7111  8 років тому +3

      Well, the majority of the Vietnamese in the US are from South Vietnam and therefore, they speak Vietnamese in a Southern accent which is way more nasal than the (standard) Northern accent. Maybe try to watch this little news clip in Northern Vietnamese => ua-cam.com/video/-pNuX1cSdMQ/v-deo.html Would be nice if you can tell me if you can actually hear a difference or not? ;)

    • @ddoublevdvv7111
      @ddoublevdvv7111  8 років тому +2

      Yes, I know ^^ The Vietnamese experience the same revival movement of their own traditional clothing from the time before the Nguyen dynasty took over, which also resembles the Chinese HanFu a little bit. But if you think logically, the last dynasty is like the "winner" and therefore, you have to use the traditional clothing from that very last dynasty and not something from the other ones who lost. But it would be nice to literally experience an exception to the rule for both China and Vietnam since both QiPao and AoDai look kind of too modern and not as fancy as the Japanese Kimono and Korean HanBok :))

      Personally, I prefer Qipao coz although Hanfu, Kimono or Hanbok look fancy but not convenient. You know Kimono takes a long time to put it on and you need someone else to help with it. Not mention wearing your hair in a traditional style. Aodai/Qiqao are both traditional and modern like you said, for times we need sth we can wear casually in daily life

    For our Western viewers, Vietnamese "Áo dài" literally translate as the "Vietnamese traditional long dress"; for "Áo" - or "áo" - means "dress" and "dài" means long.
    The purpose of the Vietnamese Áo dài when worn by a Vietnamese woman - or any woman for that matter - is to convey sense of modesty, chastity and gracefulness.
    The silk fabric of Áo dài is designed to wrap tightly around the woman's voluptuous figure - bust, waist, and bottom - so even though the Vietnamese traditional long dress covers everything, it hides nothing! Straight men with good imagination are often tantalised sensually when they see women wearing the Vietnamese Áo dài.
    Let your imagination go wild, gentlemen!

Trước áo dài trang phục truyền thống VN rất đa dạng và phong phú. Việc tuyên truyền áo dài như 1 loại trang phục truyền thống chính thức và duy nhất là 1 việc hết sức sai lầm. It got influenced from China but it's different. Qipao is a dress not worn with pants and with very low split below the knees during the Quing dynasty. Later it got sexier to split to the thigh since 1920s. Vietnamese dress has similar top but with high split to the waist and is worn with pants.
      Just like you watch Cdramas in the Tang dynasty, you'll find their clothing is similar to Korean hanbok with high waist and flowy skirts.

But instead of high-collars, these Aodais have cross-collars and round-collars. High-collars only existed in Nguyen. But they're technically all Aodais since their outer top shirts (áo) is long and reach to their knees (dài).

During 19th century, Vietnamese thought they are the only one still hold Han culture ( Han's Ming dynasty be invaded by Manchu long ago) and they think Qing dynasty just a some barbarians. But they never realized that their clothing actually be influence by...Manchu more than Han.

Chinese have many styles and developnents of national/traditional costumes much more than other Asian countries because of the very very long chinese histories. Not suprisingly, Chinese costumes (such as Hanfu) have the largest influences on other Asian clothes in many periods. Perhaps Hanfu is the original one !

      Jennifer Xiong Panda it doesnt matter which vietnam is real. You’re not vietnamese either right? If you’re not, you dont have no say. Besides, south vietnam didnt even exist until the 18th century so what you mean south vietnam is the “real vietnam”? Stfu because you’re probably chinese and you don’t know what you’re talking about. Besides its none of your business on which is real. It doesnt affect you so shut up.

      It's not copying but only influence. By wearing western clothes like jeans, business suit, converse shoes and so on in the 21st century doesn't mean that the whole world copies one another but all countries are influenced by the westerners (white people)... In ancient times only China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam cooperated with one another so it just comes natural that they all got influenced by the Chinese who where right in the middle of these countries.
