I forgot to mention this but fun fact about making this video; I spent nearly a whole day playing WDL and once leaving my apartment at 1am, I very briefly drove on the wrong side of the road, because I was so used to driving in London.
Creepy story, I was playing Legion for a while, and managed to get a spy character earlier on, and I loved playing as him, it was easy to project myself onto him, his appearance was close to mine, and his personality was sarcastic, witty, but doesn't really know how to communicate with people. During my playthrough, my friend passed away. A week later, I booted up the game again, and the opening sequence to show what the character did while you were away played a short scene of my guy sitting in front of a grave, and Bagsley asking if he wants a recommendation on books to deal with grief. I did end up playing and beating the game. Wasn't my favorite, finding the 'right' character to play as definitely improved my experience.
I don't mean this in a bad way but this almost sounds like a setup for one of those gaming creepypastas from back in the day. In all seriousness though I'm really sorry you lost your friend, and I hope you're doing okay now.
Imagine if this franchise was so successful we could have had a lot of these with different cities like Tokyo New York Washington DC. man but this is what we get.
Word. It's like they couldn't make up their mind about what they wanted it to be. Was it going to be a gritty techno-noir GTA game, or a sunny "little-guy anonymous vs big corporate techbro" game, or a cyberpunk near-future dystopia? For me the perfect Watch Dogs would be an amalgamation of the character motivations and believably of the first game with the hacking and drone mechanics of the second, because the first game is a little too John Wick and the second game is often too hard to take seriously what's going on despite it being a fun world to play around in.
The signs were showing in WD2, when everything was made "non-lethal" and accomplished by a group that looked like a Benetton ad. But at least 2 was still fun.
I do love the IDEA of playing as anyone. I love how you can turn a random NPC into your protagonist and write your own backstory for them. The fact that they can die or get locked up at any moment (if you enable that option in the difficulty settings of course) is great and reminds me so much of X-com series. That's the reason I keep coming back to Legion every now and then. It's my guilty pleasure Ubisoft title. Shame that the rest of the game's features are done so poorly.
@ it’s ok you can make up for it by telling gamingwins to upload his ff7 rebirth video now women have given birth in the time it’s been since his remake video.
For the voice acting thing/writing unique dialogue: Larian hired *hundreds* of voice talent for Baldur's Gate 3. Every line is voiced, written, by a human. Every small little quip from random nobodies you could care less about on the Sword Coast, is voiced. Ubisoft being the mega-giant that it is, decided to just hire a small handful of actors and did the bare minimum of writing/acting for 'play as anyone' in London. Like I don't know the metrics and behind-the-scenes stuff, but Larian continues to embarrass AAA dev studios.
26:27 lol the Cyberpunk Johny Silverhand theme playing when talking about "failed systems," about how Ubisoft failed to deliver, and how they took away baseline abilities is gold
WD:Legion had one last good thing with the AC Crossover DLC that was hinted that they were conneted since the first game, and the 4th AC. But Ubi decided to not make it canon after all that edging.
I completely agree with your point about the tone of the game, people are dying in the streets, Clan Kelly is selling organs and people, Skye basically lobotomized her mother and brother, but the characters are always so emotionless or are making jokes at the most inappropriate moments. I think Bagley should have been the comic relief to cheer up the agents after seeing such horrible things, it would make sense, especially at the end where he "dies" saying goodbye to the one who was there to keep the resistance together, it would make the moment even more emotional and kind of prove that AI and technology itself is not the problem, but the people who use it to get power and money.
We live a world like this already. I enjoy my tone that I project through the world. Why be saddened publicly. when I can do something about the world I’m hyped about it.
What worked for me the most was having Aiden serve as the "primary" protagonist for Legion's story -- in a kind of expanded AC Brotherhood / Syndicate hybrid way of accruing more people, and occasionally playing as them, through a more collectivist mitigation of Albion's power. Wrench, Darcy, the granny - all important, all useful, but like supporting protags. There were hiccups, inconsistencies, under-baked content. But following his arc after Bloodline, it felt right to bring things full circle.
Legion saddens me because with just a couple of tweaks it could've been great, imagine if the main story focused in on 3 or 4 main characters each with their own missions GTA V style, but at various points in the game you have to go out and recruit characters with particular skill sets to play roles in bigger missions like the Heists in GTA V, but after you finish them you can play as them in the open world and be able to go on their own side quests based around their lives. A more focused approach to this game's concept could've been excellent

So Uncivilized summed up Legion perfectly hilariously enough: "The point of this kid is that he can be anyone. The point of this kid is that he is someone".
It's like Ubisoft has a different team of writers for their side missions compared to their main story missions. They're generally so much more interesting than the main game and I don't know why there's such a big disconnect
less corporate oversight, I should imagine. The main story of any AAA game is going to have a heck of a lot of people inputting on it, whereas side-missions not so much.
I do appreciate how real you can be. Its good to show the best side of a game but also be honest when it doesn't work. I like the idea of Legion but for it to work it needs have less story and focus on its mechanics. Without a set character it lacks an anchor. It should have focused on the more emergent storytelling it has.
It would be so dope if Ubisoft somehow make Watch Dogs 3 and the story is that the deadsec in legion gets corrupt and the group we built become the main villains in 3, that way they can still make this canon while also redeem it to the fans.
something that you miss in Chapter 4 that is pretty amazing is after you finish a story mission, you can go back to your team and talk with them about their opinion of skye larsen, how it feels to be on dedsec, etc. And that make you connect with your agents
From my understanding they WANTED to include something like the Nemesis system... but they couldn't because W.B. copyrighted the mechanic. Stupid right?
I feel the same way. This game has so much potential and has glimpses which makes it hurt all the more. To top it, Ubisoft forced you to buy the best unique operatives instead of earning them in game.
The recruit mechanic sounds like something that would work mostly for online, specially invasions. Cause the idea of minding your own business till you get notified that a rival hacker is stealing away your data and you gotta track and stop them only to fail because you overlooked a grandma that was on the background sounds interesting.
The thing is i REALLY wanted to like legion. The idea of if you kill a character in the game they can’t come back always intrigued me and doesn’t get explored enough in games. So when I see this game I was really interested just to get bored of it in a few hours. Leave it up to Ubisoft to mess up good concepts
Thinking about it more, with the uploaded-consciousness storyline already present in the I feel like they should have done what Driver: San Francisco did which was have your character jump from body to body, retaining his identity but possessing their body and car. Imagine if your character was Bagley or some other uploaded consciousness and you could take control of people via hacking brain chips or something along that line. This would’ve allowed them to keep the character writing which made Watch Dogs 2 so memorable by having core characters, while also doing the “play as anyone” bit they wanted for Legion. Plus, it would’ve been a cool evolution on the franchise to get to the point where you’re not literally hacking people.
Hey man, I hope you're doing good. I always enjoy your vids even if I don't always agree with your opinions. I really like your positive vibes but it is nice to see you aboslutley shred Legion into pieces lol. Looking forward to the next vid!
My favourite part of Watch Dogs Legion is... Watch Dogs 2 finalle. Instead of giving us hundreds of empty shells they should've made a hacker group with different personalities and specialties, to reflect your preferable playstyle. You want to go silent and sneaky? Play Sitara You want to use different gadgets? Play Josh You want to go boom? Play -Rico- Wrench Just like GTA 5. Just like... AC Shadows?
you know what this game reminds me of? MGSV. the game about collecting soldiers and building a private army to stand up against shadowy governments. you know what that game had? the option to play ANY soldier you hired into your army, granted it was more of a novelty and there, there wasnt really a reason to engage with the system, but honestly it would fit perfectly within the systems of this game without having to sacrifice a central character and consistent themes. this just seems like such a slam dunk and i can't look at this game without imagining some alternate version of it.
You know what's super weird? Legion's London is the first ever video game map that's made me sick. I have no clue what's causing it, but something about the graphics, the camera distance and shake, the layout, the design of everything... It all gave me what felt like motion sickness. Even now watching the gameplay, I still get it. Maybe it's all the messy clutter, how busy the screen is, especially when driving. There's too much chaotic colours everywhere, there's no colorpalette. But then I play Cyberpunk's urban sprawl and I get none of that. Maybe it's the heavy TAA too as blurriness gives me a slightly nauseous feeling as well.
I really don't see the issue in WD1 and WD2 having such different tones to each other. Plenty of series change the mood completely between sequels. The issue Legion tried to embody both, rather than attempting it's own thing.
It split the fan base instead of improving the first one. It makes no sense to change tone when you already have an expectation. It could of been a different title name which would of helped but no, they decided to add two.
@@Dead8Head I swear you bozos are tone deaf. Watch Dogs 1 takes place in Chicago and Watch Dog's 2 takes place in San Francisco so tell me, what is the difference between these 2 cities? You say the games tone and writing was "whiplash" but what you don't get is it wouldn't make sense for WD2 to have the same tone/atmosphere as the first game, that's like playing GTA 4 and expecting GTA 5 to be the same game. Watch Dogs 1 was a revenge story with the primary goal of taking down a crime syndicate, Watch Dog's 2 is hacktivist game based around exposing the snakes of Silicon Valley and how companies use people's data to basically spy on them. Game franchises change things to keep from going stagnant, Chicago's depiction in the first game was dull and broody compared to San Francisco that was bright and colorful. You couldn't have expected the second game to have the same atmosphere and dark story ≠ good writing.
I actually quite enjoy this game, purely because I played it once the Aiden Pearce DLC had come out. I was able to play that then use Aiden as the main character of the actual game, and for me, it genuinely felt like a sequel to the first game. I don’t think I would have had as much fun playing as a random NPC, but playing as an established character like Aiden made it so much better
I really wanted a Nemesis system like Shadow of Mordor, but with grudge hackers, double agents, revenge missions, crazy personalities, and all that stuff. At least the Epilogue DLC was pretty good.
I have never seen England portrayed more cringe than in Watchdogs Legion - and that is saying something. The heroes are all those teen mods from Book of Boba Fett.
I just wish they chose literally any city other than London. The last time I played a game set somewhere in the UK that was made by a non-UK studio, that wasn't set in London was the first Resistance game by Insomniac Games and even then they couldn't resist making the final level be London. No-one likes London. Even Londoners hate London. Why not Birmingham with its rich history of subterranean caves, or Norwich with its mote castle? London as a setting is as unimaginative as using New York in a game set in the US.
I wish you posted this video sooner. I started with Watch Dogs 2 and was convinced by your video to play the first game, through the ignorance of wanting more I bought Watch Dogs Legion and haven’t even finished it. Anyways great video, I’m gonna go watch the infamous 2 review for the 3rd time.
Y'know, even though I've never played either of these games, you'd think Legion would've taken some notes from Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops/Peace Walker and whatever other games in the series had a similar recruitment system, since that not only let you play as anyone (though I think that part might've been really limited), but still gave you a main character to follow. And I can only assume the reason they didn't was for perma-death to work which... was clearly not worth it. Again, I've never played these games, so I could be wrong, but either way they really should've compromised on the play as anyone thing for the sake of the story if nothing else
I really wanted to like legion like you said, the resistance mode is what made the game so much better. But with the bass issues such as the takedown punching people, it just can't be played. I wish someone could eventually fix it maybe but people don't care enough for this game anymore
9:50 what it sounds like you're talking about... is an rpg... Like what if they made watch dogs legion a genuine rpg with choices. something devs have been genuinely afraid of doing as of late and is probably going to happen less now that bioware botched ME and DragonAge and are firing a bunch of people...
The hit detection and glitches are the only reason why I never attempted permadeath modes in WDL, GRW and GRB. All these games appear to have the same issues. This is especially clear when comparing the shotgun drone from WDL with helicopter rockets in any of the two GR games. You fire, the projectile hits, the enemy lives for somewhere between 0.5 and 4 seconds and then the game recognises the hit.
I liked 1 and loved 2.Legion broke my heart. I was so excited for Watch Dogs 3. Imagine how great it could be if they found ways to improve on the already great, Watch Dogs 2. Then I saw the reveal trailer..... I was so angry. They completely destroyed the series. An open world game is held together by its world and its protagonist. Ubisoft tried to make an open world game without either. They didn't just have a bad protagonist, they had no protagonist at all. If you're everyone, you care about no one and if you care about no one, you don't care about the story or the world. It's video games 101 and Ubisoft somehow managed to fail that class. It's god damned mind boggling.
The best way to care for your protagonists in this game is to recruit a select few and keep permadeath on. That way you grow to care for them and the risk that they will be gone forever makes you want to play the best you can
I remember getting it on a deep sale along with the other 2 games. It's kinda sad how Yahtzee's writing was wasted on what is essentially a ChatGPT plot synopsis of a Watch Dogs game
Damn this is good timing. I just recently picked up Legion as my inaugural PS5 game. Watch Dogs 1 was my first PS4 game so I wanted to keep up a tradition. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two games. Yes, both had their own problems, but I enjoyed both much more than Legion. I went into it blind. I knew nothing about the “play as anyone” aspect of the game. I thought it was cool at first but I felt so detached from each character. Not being addressed by name in the game alone made everything feel off. Like nothing mattered. There was no connection between myself and any of the Operatives. I’ve been hate-playing it ever since I got it. Playing through Resistance mode right now to get the last Trophy I need to 100% it. After that, I’m never playing this game again lmao.
During my play through I discovered that enemies are incapable of following you into the underground train stations. There is just an oversight in their programming where they just can’t get all the way down the stairs. This resulted in my wanted level disappearing because they can’t find me, or the AI freaking out because they know where I am but can’t reach me so my wanted level wouldn’t disappear until I found a new place to hide. Is this still the case?
i liked the hand to hand combat and drone operator, got a whole line up of them lol. played a crap ton of multiplayer still do a tiny bit but slowed down.
The watch dogs series reflects our society today Watch dogs 1: conspiracy theorists want to be hidden, it is a niche Watch dogs 2: there is more conspiracy theorists and some are fine with being more open about it Watch dogs legion: if you are not a conspiracy theorists, you are the odd one out. ANYONE and EVERYONE has their own reasons for being one
I just finished Legion’s campaign and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can easily say that this game is over hated. So this video’s timing is heartbreaking 😭
You Are Not Alone here's how I rank my Watch Dogs trilogy Watch Dogs 1 Watch Dogs Legion in Watch Dogs 2 that's how good I love Legion even though it's the weakest but it's still fun game I called this my 007 open world game
My headcanon for the story is that we're the AI taking control of the bodies of operators, like in Clive Barker's Jericho Makes it more interesting lol
They should have just done something similar to AC Syndicate. It would also be cool if they had a character creation and whenever you died you had to roll another character. Sort of combine roguelike elements with a dash of dnd. And it would be super impactful if it kept track of all your dead characters and showed you their graves or obituaries.
My husband bought Legion for me while was sick from pregnancy. Being pregnant made me fixate on games really hard, but Legion legot made me put down the controller, and trade it back in at GameStop. I never ever want to see a light line puzzle again.
Back in 2022 my friend and I used to exchange games to play. I gave him GOW 3 remastered and he offered me a choice between cyberpunk and watchdogs legion. He advised Legion saying cyberpunk was too buggy to play(it was the ps4 disc and i didn't even have wifi to update for bug fixes). My experience with Legion was SO bad(not even bugs, just the game itself) I swear on the bones of my ancestors i would have preferred to go through cyberpunk in It's day 1 state because at least my friend said he managed to finish the game. My save on Legion got corrupted when i went to school some day and didn't even want to replay it. I just returned it to him
The fact that there isnt a protagonist has never made me wanna play the game less. I am pretty sure I would like watchdogs but knowing I wont like the most recent game makes it hard
I played the game for one reason only "Free London." I played it with Ubisoft+ and played it on the resistance mode. The story didn't capture me, so that's why I just made my own story of becoming a rebel. It was very disappointing when I freed all the locations and there was no cut scene, no acknowledgment of freeing London, not even a trophy/achievement (played on Stadia)
The city is definitely one strong point of this game. Love your video man. Always, entertaining and a nice dive into an analysis. I like that even if youre speaking about glitches and issue a game may have, you still enjoy em. Youre still a gamer and not pretending like developers didn't try or that great concept but could have been executed better.

Bloodlines cemented for me that we should've had a main protagonist and the play as anyone should've been supplementary.

The quest where you go to Sky's house!? That was crazy! That was a platinum gaming moment in the midst of a sea of turds.

you know what this game reminds me of? MGSV. the game about collecting soldiers and building a private army to stand up against shadowy governments. you know what that game had? the option to play ANY soldier you hired into your army, granted it was more of a novelty and there, there wasnt really a reason to engage with the system, but honestly it would fit perfectly within the systems of this game without having to sacrifice a central character and consistent themes. this just seems like such a slam dunk and i can't look at this game without imagining some alternate version of it.
Bloodline kinda successfully did that then the base game funny enough.
@@Dead8Head your comment doesn't make sense
@@IllMatic97 the game's tone and writing is a whiplash instead of focusing and improving from Watch Dogs 1
Every new that boy aqua video is the best that boy aqua video
First game (masterpiece)
Watch dogs 2 (great)
Legion (Heavily MIXED)
I really wanted a Nemesis system like Shadow of Mordor, but with grudge hackers, double agents, revenge missions, crazy personalities, and all that stuff. At least the Epilogue DLC was pretty good.
They was but Wb copyrighted it
I have never seen England portrayed more cringe than in Watchdogs Legion - and that is saying something.
32:31 I laughed so hard I nearly pissed myself 😂😂😂
Y'know, even though I've never played either of these games, you'd think Legion would've taken some notes from Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops/Peace Walker and whatever other games in the series had a similar recruitment system, since that not only let you play as anyone (though I think that part might've been really limited), but still gave you a main character to follow. And I can only assume the reason they didn't was for perma-death to work which... was clearly not worth it.
Again, I've never played these games, so I could be wrong, but either way they really should've compromised on the play as anyone thing for the sake of the story if nothing else
PERFECT TIMING, I JUST WATCHED THE WD2 VIDEO YESTERDAY
I really wanted to like legion like you said, the resistance mode is what made the game so much better. But with the bass issues such as the takedown punching people, it just can't be played. I wish someone could eventually fix it maybe but people don't care enough for this game anymore
9:50 what it sounds like you're talking about... is an rpg... Like what if they made watch dogs legion a genuine rpg with choices. something devs have been genuinely afraid of doing as of late and is probably going to happen less now that bioware botched ME and DragonAge and are firing a bunch of people...
Its crazy how this whole video was anger and frustration and the first watch dog video one of the biggest problems was aidens coat😂
this boy can write!! new sub!
Quick question (haven't seen the video yet), what is GRW and GRB ? I really like permadeath modes and i'm interested. Many thanks in advance.
@@CheekySkruby Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint respectively.
@ Platinumed them back in the day, permadeath difficulty. Was quite hard, many thanks for the answer!
This video sums up exactly how my playthrough and experience was
God you perfectly described my feelings for this game; although I didn’t get half as deep as you did before I quit
Hearing a few cyberpunk songs makes me hopeful for a (probably 5 hours long) cyberpunk video😭🗣
Hey buddy, that Canadian impression was pretty spot on, guy.
I literally watched the watch dogs 2 video a couple hours ago, and then i get back home and see this.
The GOAT dropped again, now I know everything's gonna be okay
The best way to care for your protagonists in this game is to recruit a select few and keep permadeath on. That way you grow to care for them and the risk that they will be gone forever makes you want to play the best you can
God, I just wanted a game with the characters, themes and style of 1 and the hacking depth of 2.
Instead we got... Legion
The Toronto accent part made this video an instant classic
I was so excited when this came out. I loved Watch Dogs 2 to death.
I played 3 Hours of Legion and then just quit very disappointed.
The NPC talked the same and they behave as droids.
Damn, I really miss watch dogs. It was my first ps4 game and I was hooked to the fullest.
i liked the hand to hand combat and drone operator, got a whole line up of them lol. played a crap ton of multiplayer still do a tiny bit but slowed down.
The watch dogs series reflects our society today
Watch dogs 1: conspiracy theorists want to be hidden, it is a niche
Watch dogs 2: there is more conspiracy theorists and some are fine with being more open about it
Watch dogs legion: if you are not a conspiracy theorists, you are the odd one out.
Bloodlines is good. But legion is no where near as good as 1
I liked it but it has it's flaws
You probably enjoyed the srw reboot
@ what’s srw?
My headcanon for the story is that we're the AI taking control of the bodies of operators, like in Clive Barker's Jericho
Makes it more interesting lol
It's crazy that a game specifically about hacking is worse than Cyberpunk which has hacking as an option.
They should have just done something similar to AC Syndicate. It would also be cool if they had a character creation and whenever you died you had to roll another character. Sort of combine roguelike elements with a dash of dnd. And it would be super impactful if it kept track of all your dead characters and showed you their graves or obituaries.
It certainly pleased the people who actually drive on the left hand side of the road :P
My husband bought Legion for me while was sick from pregnancy. Being pregnant made me fixate on games really hard, but Legion legot made me put down the controller, and trade it back in at GameStop. I never ever want to see a light line puzzle again.
I always get confused with this guy, the salt factory, always nerdy and captin midnight
I had fun playing this game, forget the story.. the gameplay was fun with all the abilities and of course being in London was immersive
"Pay the fuck attention"
-That Boy Aqua, 2025
I just returned it to him
It will never happen, but I'd love to see a game placed after watch dogs 1, showing how Aiden is destroying some other mafia
Yo aqua would love a death stranding video, with the second game coming should make a great vid for an underated game
The fact that there isnt a protagonist has never made me wanna play the game less. I am pretty sure I would like watchdogs but knowing I wont like the most recent game makes it hard
I kinda fux with Legion ngl...I think the procedurally generated characters were hilarious
It’s funny I get this video I tried it out again today and the world just feels so lifeless and doesn’t make much since
The city is definitely one strong point of this game. Love your video man. Always, entertaining and a nice dive into an analysis.
I like that even if youre speaking about glitches and issue a game may have, you still enjoy em. Youre still a gamer and not pretending like developers didn't try or that great concept but could have been executed better.
