I put a rough country 4 inch lift kit in my 2000 WJ and one thing I made sure to do is put thread sealer on every bolt lol. Also after 500 miles they suggest you torque everything again just in case.....my only complaint is the kit didn't include any decals 😆
Watching this suspension work today was awesome 👌. I love where you are headed with the WJ
Should be fun to get back on the trail as well
love the fact that you did this in your driveway just like the rest of us! CHEERS!!!
Haha!
Me too!! Regard from Italy by MY Grand Cherokee WJ !!
Consider installing the Bushwacker pocket flares. I also have 33s on my WJ and without the flares it rubbed like crazy when it flexes even a little but WITH the flares there's no problem at all. Also, be aware of your windshield washer pump. If you don't relocate it it will get torn off. Cheers bro, from another WJ lover.
Another couple of recommendations: drill out the front upper axle side bushing and bracket for a 1/2” grade 8 bolt. You might also need to relocate the windshield washer reservoir as it sits in the space in front of the driver side fender liner.
Good point on that bolt!
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Happy to see another WJ in my neck of the woods! I have an '04 with an IRO critical path 4" long arm up front and am about to upgrade the rear to their 4 link setup. Currently on 33s like you, but will soon be going to 35s. Just thought I'd introduce myself, and hope to see you on the trails soon! I agree with Ted, you'll definitely want to relocate your washer reservoir. I recommend ditching the WJ tank, and replacing it with a ZJ tank. It fits nicely under the hood up near the cowl on the driver's side.
Better yet, use IRO's flex-joint and purchase it in the 1/2" size. Those OEM bushings dont last long if you flex that front out.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 hi i have a grans cherokee 2002 v8 4.7 i have a problem with the steering when i drive on the highway or other road the steering wheel becomes hard to turn.and also i feel the rear going from left to right and it is very dangerous i don't want i hurt my 10 year old granddaughter and not my wife either
@@MuddyBeards4X4 would you have an idea of my 2 problems as I asked in my comment before
Wow. Not a mechanic so this is amazing. It always amazes how you know how to do this stuff. Keep up the videos
Thanks appreciate it
Still here for the XJ but that WJ does look cool. Nice job!
More on the trailplug is coming I promise
That's the kit I wish I would have done. Keep an eye on those shocks. Mine blew out in about a year. Running Bilstein 5100s now and love them. Made the ride drastically better too.
Ya I think I should have upgraded to the bilstein
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Meh, no biggie. Maybe they improved the DTs! Wheel them and upgrade after you've had some fun.
You can use a ratchet strap to help adjust the track bar. I used a straight edge at the center of hub to the spring perch to take a measurement. The closest iwas able to adjust was to a 1/16 of an inch. I agree it is a great kit. I went with the triangulation 4 link in the rear instead if the adjustable a arm.
@MuddyBeards4x4, appreciate your time and effort to bring us your WJ install of the long arm lift kit, looking to do the same with my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited wj, love your channel and keep doing what your doing brah, hang loose see you guys on the next one 👍 stay safe and safe travels brahda 👍 🤙✌ 👊
Sweet ride. The lift wheels and tires looks sick. Completely changed the look of the Jeep.
Man, that thing is impressive off-road.
Dude! What a gas. You got my TASTE. I looked up on their sight about $1900 plus your rear additions. DANG! You must be confident in the condition of the truck. I just rebuilt Ma's 2003 WJ front end suspension. & steering. What a freakin' SCHOOL.
I went with a 7" critical path in my 96 and the two 97's the short arm , I don't remember. They held very well. Rides beautiful
Good to hear
Iron Rock discontinued the critical path kit - at least for the WJ's. I was disappointed because that's the one I was going to go with....
Finally, some awesome content on the Muddy Beards channel..That Rock Link kit looks amazing Robbie, nice job.💪👍👍😁😁
I am very impressed by it.
Nice build! I'm looking at a WJ to do this to and let it be my last one (I've had 7 of them, bought, fixed and sold) they are solid vehicles if you treat them right. Want the overland package so I get the H.O. with the varilock diffs and do a T-Case swap to a select track and be done with it.
Will front and rear end of a 05 fit a 99 and if so what are the advantages if any?
I just ordered the IRO 5.5" long arm pro kit with the 4 link rear conversion for my XJ. I can't wait to get it installed.
I love my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 4 inch long arm lift 33 x12.5 R17s Inline 4.0 Mint Condition Blacked Out and i have a new 2021 with 16000 kms but oringal ,Love My Jeeps
I also have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 4.0 Im thinking of going with the 4 inch lift too! Did you get the kit from iron rock?
@@GuillermoLopez-od5hj it started out with a 4 inch Cross Country but it's been heavily modified in the 5 years I've owned it with better Shocks, Springs, Everything lol So many parts I've replaced to get it to crawl over 2 foot Rocks, few feet of mud and come out alive and the Jeep Still Drivable lol
I'm actually going for the complete long arm kit front and rear, replace the existing suspension mounts and do some much needed rust removal. Well done video.
How do you remove the rust?
@@matthew7972 depends on how bad it is, can be as simple as sanding and using anti rust coating or complicated to the point of cutting it out and making a new panel section. Some parts even have new manufacture replacements or replacement panel sections, one such example is the spring perches that are a common area of major rust. The same goes for rocker panels.
Looks good shoulda done the spring isolators too tho ... They make big difference on these wj's keep up the good work..
So beautiful, nearly brought a tear to my eye!
I bought this kit two years ago 3link not to fond of the actual kit but had the long control Arms no A axel some parts look new that they added but the kit overall makes my jeep feel like a spider going over things with ease when off roaring
Atta Boy 🤙I love the IRO stuff!! If I ever get my hands on a WJ cheap, I want to install their WJ 8" ROCK-LINK PRO Long Arm Lift Kit, which looks🤩SICK!!
I think my buddy put that kit on his 99. The amount of suspension travel is amazing!
I got to try it out the other day and it works great
Great work but after off roading for that last 30 years I would say that the most important and minimum tire size should be 35". Also I gotta say I love that you doing a lot of this barefoot!
I was In until the cutting of the front control-arm mounts - ain’t no way I’m cutting into my unibody. 🚫
But I will check out this supplier, see what else they might have to offer. I’ve had my ‘01 WJ for just over a year, and still haven’t even been able to find decent TIRES to fit it, let-alone suspension and overlanding upgrades.
I mistakenly thought the Jeep community was more helpful and supportive, but in a year of asking other WJ owners for supplier suggestions and product recommendations, I have never gotten one single response. Must be another sad sign of our times.
Nonetheless, this video was excellent. Great job recording the video, and narrating the audio. 🏆
Thanks for your response. Short arm lifts (which IRO does offer) would be a good solution if you do not want to cut off the brackets. For most applications short arms will work just fine. The IRO ones are also adjustable.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Awesome, thanks! 👍🏼
Awesome that you show it so detailed and step by step plus in comparison to the original parts! 🤙
You could be lucky that you got no technical monitoring associations as we got it here in Germany. These associations do not allow to cut off any part of the original car body. Sucks!
But - no risk, no fun! 😆 My WG nevertheless has gotten a smooth lift.
Right on brotha I love what you do. I got a 2002 WJ overland (same color too) and love hitting the trails here in Northern California. If you're ever out this way give me a holler 👍🏻
I love IRO products. I have there full 3.5" fully adjustable suspension in my ZJ. There parts are so beefy and there customer service is great. My only regret is not getting long arms at least in the front.
That zj kit looks good too
This is exactly where I want my 04' WJ overland with the 4.7l HO to be! I'm currently on a 4" suspension system with core adjustable short arms with a rear spacer. I think I'm going to go with the IRO rock link LA front and keep the SA rear with adjustable upper arm just like your build! You have a great looking WJ now!
I'm on 265's trimmed out currently, but want to run a 305/70/16 tire or possibly 35"/37" in the future when axle upgrading happens. But as yours sits, I think I'd be happy with a 33-12.00-16. I'm in Iowa, so I have to drive too, or trailer to wheeling spots. I was going to do this to my XJ, but after this video, I'm going to keep it SA front, ACOS and 33x12.50x15 tires.
We also have another 04' WJ special edition 4.0l that has a 4" SA and 255 70 17's and ahe wants bigger wheel and tire combo as well.
Glad I found your channel, it's exactly what I had in mind for my WJ overland and seeing it has sold me on IRO over Clayton. I'm going to have to subscribe and follow on muddy beards! Thanks for the complete video!
Right on buddy. Sounds like you have some fun toys
@Muddy Beards 4X4 Sold my built YJ to get back into a WJ. Had one before and I hit a deer and it went through the windshield and was totaled out. My fiance has a lifted WJ and now we have almost matching ones. The XJ is the trail rig and have a challenger for the road during warm months.
I've always been a rock person, but we want to get into overlanding. Eventually make it out your way to the PNW. I'd like to go back to moab with the kids and show them the slick rock along with hitting black bear pass too. I'm glad the kids enjoy it, gives us something to plan and do!
Thumbs Up! Nice rig and build video. Can you expand on how this IRO lift kit is the best as compared to a Rustys, Rough Country, or other WJ lift kit available from other reputable manufacturers? Also, do you think a 6 inch lift would clear 32-33 inch tires without any fender/body trimming?
Thanks and looking forward to videos of this rig in action on some trails!
I went Iron Rock Off Road long arm, front and rear kit. Their upgrade is the only lift that does not twist the axle when flexing.
I am super happy with my lift
I got the iro rock link for my 06 Jeep LJ. I freaking love it.
I did have ironman all country mt like 4 months after they came out. I'll say in Wisconsin they were fantastic in all the terrains and led me to km3 in the future. My downfall with them was they wouldn't balance, it seems that issue was worked out, but minus the balance issue I loved them. I believe it's the old km2 mold.
They do have some balancing issues for sure
@@MuddyBeards4X4 I don't know if you got something besides E rated tires, but I wonder if that may be part of the issue being that they're more for a full size truck. When I went from E rated to D rated on my ~4000 lb lj. Ride quality changed dramatically, and my D rated Patagonias balanced out a lot better.
Apples to oranges though.
Looks great! Thanks for sharing. Would have upgraded front brake callipers to Akebono style for sure
Really like the video. We've got a few WJs and believe they're one of the best family wheelers out there.
Couldn't agree more. I can't wait to have this thing on some adventures
Enjoyed this…ratchet strap are our friend when it comes to suspension work
Absolutely
I have a '02 WJ, lol I got rid of those Tevis front calipers, Akebono's fit just fine, or you could upgrade to Wilwood calipers, with that, great job on the lift.
Good job man looks great did a 3” lift on mine love it putting new track bar on next week all other components are new!
Sounds awesome
I did all this and I had a lift and it took me all weekend. I live up north and the rust was so bad it took an entire day just to remove the old parts.
We sell those Ironman tires a lot where I work. Ironman is a good brand.
Actually took them out today and I thought they worked great. They are noisy on road though
I've got the same setup, it wheels really nice. Likes a couple other people mentioned the flex joint in the front upper mount is money and I just put there otk heim kit in.
Brave fella installing that kit in bare feet!😳
Meh it was hot out
Awesome Jeep
I'm going to buy a 2005 Jeep with a lift already on it.
Awesome build .New follower
Would love to see a vid of how you trimmed the fenders.
Nice..I have simular setup but we installed flex joints above the axle & coil retanors, bump stops & bilstein shocks with bar pin eleminators
Sweet vw in the background
I wish that someone would make a slightly larger front brake kit for these Jeeps but they don't that I know of. The slotted discs that you put on the front of this Jeep under hard braking I have found cars a little bit of a vibration and I ended up having to install them with the slots pointed like they look like they were on their backwards. I swapped them side to side. You may find that it is a smoother brake pedal that way especially if you get under hard braking.
I have a 2003 in gold, I love the color run that one you've got. I don't intend to raise mine because I drive it 99% on the street. I have no plans on off-roading it. I am thinking about putting a bit more engine in it. You will find that if you use the 2007 cylinder heads and use the 2008 cams and switch over the timers that are on your original cams. You will get probably 30 to 40 more horsepower and if you keep the smaller intake manifold that you have on your Jeep you'll probably get a bit more torque. You can get more horsepower if you go to the larger intake but I don't think it gives you more torque I think it gives you a little bit more horsepower and flattens out the torque but the should stay higher with the smaller intake.
I have been able to tweak my alignment a couple of times myself whenever I've done any changes. It's actually not that hard to do, and you align it with a couple of measurements and you go out and drive it and you can figure out which parts need to be adjusted to keep your steering wheel straight and your wheels in alignment as best as possible. Go get your front end alignment for a baseline if you wish, I used to change out a lot of steering racks in the '80s when they weren't filtering them and they were chewing themselves up, I would always put in a Chrysler fuel filter into the system that would stop them from wearing out and I always did the front end alignments with a piece of string and by eyeball and the people never complained about their alignment. One person even met me about 66,000 miles later and said they've never had to get the front end line it wasn't burning off the tires it wasn't wearing the tires like it did from the factory, it was great.
Man I need to find a video like this for a WK (2005) build.
I've been waiting to see the grand cherokee get some attention
This thing will be getting lots of attention here on out
Dang thats sexy. Looking to lift my WJ just trying to figure it all out. I've owned a ZJ, and two XJ's both XJ's lifted last one was 4.5" with 33's and I miss it.
I'm impressed with my IRO long arm kit on my ZJ, you def could've done worse! Looking forward to seeing ur WJ in action!🤘
Very nice Jeep , it turned out great . Looks like a good quality lift but I think we can all agree , it’s a bit overpriced. With a little know how, some fabricating , ordering parts from different sources , this lift kit could be achieved for way cheaper than 3500 dollars , which is the price after taxes . That’s just insane to me . But anyway,, looks awesome , 😎 ,, I’ll be following you to see how it performs
Love the WJ look once they’re lifted but I went with the ZJ. Long arm is the best thing you can do on any Jeep IMO it’s great on and off road.
Also, man that mk4 is making me miss mine. Mine looked very similar to that one at one point. Silver with black rub strips and red/clear tails 🤘🏼
Haha I get more attention with that car then anything else. Its just a tdi daily.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 And it’s a TDi 🤩 I’m jealous
America, yuo are great!!! Love America!!!
your jeep looks perfect,
Thanks!
Looks real good brother !
How on earth do you tastefully trip them wheel wells?!? GOTTA see it!
That’s a nice kit! Great work!
Looks great! Excited to see a trip
So am I!
When you hear that clunking in the back, its the upper shock mount bolts.😜
Curious why you didn't opt for long arms in the rear. I'm running the IRO 6” lift (long arms f/r) on my '02 WJ and love it.
You know I really pondered it. But it came down to cost and purpose of the rig. I want it to be offroad capable but it's supposed to be an overlander. If I was going to rock crawl with I for sure would have done the long arm rear as well
Nice thing with the IRO kit, he could always get the 4 link kit later if this setup doesn't work out the way he needs it to.
This kit significantly improved the handling of my rig over stock. I would like to get the rear long arms at some point in the future too. I have the quick disconnects on the way now for the front swaybar.
I have a 2001 2 wheel drive !! with a 4'' RC lift..
For now that set up it's only a dream for my WJ. Have you done a review after off-road test?
I think I'm the only one that noticed the Volkswagen on kinda rare factory vw BBS RC wheels
Haha yep. Just a little tdi daily
Love the WJ content! I might have to subscribe if you’ve got more coming.
There should be lots more
that took a just-another-SUV to cool 4X4 status
My thoughts exactly
Got me a dang ole low mile Grand limited V8 probably be barried in it respect my wj brotheren
I really like this rig
Bought my WJ about three years ago with 112,000 miles on it.Now has 133.000.Replaced heater core and a bunch of other goodies and threw a 3 inch supreme suspension in it.This baby rides like a Caddy. Also upgraded the stereo to a double din pioneer with the orig.Infinity sound system.Did you have to do any mods to get the front bumper on?It looks awesome.
Sounds awesome! I did have to trim the bumper but no other modifications
I didn’t finish watch video yet but found mixed break rotors on rear axle (9:03) (passenger and driver side)
great video. Thanks.
Clean for a 2001. I assume you don't live in the rust belt. My WJ is pretty rusty.
Yep up here in the PNW we don't worry too much about rust
Looks great! It’s hard to tell from the angle, but are you sure the joints in the lower control arms installed correctly? IIRC they send offset ones which are side specific to reduce the initial amount of angle the joint sees. Love that kit!
Oh yes they are in correct. Double checked all that.
dig it buddy, good video.
liked and subscribed!
👍
Soy de Panamá te quedó bien tengo mente proyecto así
Do you plan on a winch mount? If so HK Off-road makes a nice mount where you can keep the factory bumper.
I am looking at doing a winch bumper. Not sure if I am going to buy or build
Why didi you install your shocks upside down I have always been instructed to install them with the rod down in order to keep mud and other ?debris off of the seal?
Iron Rock off road are they still trading? Looking for kit for WK. Great video
Looks great
👊
claw hammer FTW! :)
Did you get the pro version of the lift kit or was it the regular one plus the A-arm upgrade
Did you have a issue with the stock rear driveshaft being too short ?? I'm fixin to put mine on Today.
That's sick robbie! Looks great. In total what the final tally on wheels and lift?
Less then 2k. I got the tires on tire buyer. Com. I have no affiliation with them but check them out for good prices on tires
Which do you like better for offroad? Jeep Wj or the Montero?
Had a 99 and miss it, put a lot of money in ; no regrets
They are pretty sweet. Super happy with mine
Great video.
I had the same lift and had terrible bumpsteer and steering geometry issues.
How did yours handle once aligned?
Did you have to add trackbar drop down brackets or anything later?
This drives surprisingly well for a lifted jeep. I still haven't even gotten it professionally aligned and it does pretty well. No bump steer, but does have a little sway at high speeds
I have the iron 6.5 on my WJ . I need the rear upper a arm tho
What about the drive axle angles?
Correct me if I’m wrong but are you running coil spacers on top of the four-inch springs?
There I am without a plasma cutter, damn end of this video.
You could accomplish the same thing with an angle grinder
Are you going to swap to the akebono brakes and that's a great color combo just different enough to see two colors but still work together
Dude I should have. I am familiar with the difference because I had the wj swap on my xj and used the akebobo calipers.
I got a 2001 last week, I hear my front driveline won't work with a lift. What is your experience with this on yours?
Is it the cv style (rzeppa) of does it have a u joint? My 2001 came with the u joint so no issues. I thought only some models came with the rzeppa but i could be wrong. But yes those style front shafts don't like the angles produced by a lift kit. But you can convert or look up how others are getting around it.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 I haven't been under yet to look. I just read in a forum cv starts in 02. But yours gives me hope. Happy Thanksgiving
and you don’t get death wobble?
Looks good bro!! Not as good as my wk but good lol 😂
👍
@muddy beards 4x4 do you experience any death wabble with this lift? If so, what fine tuning fixed it?
No death wobble. This kit has been solid. I would check control arm length. Make sure bolt hole to bolt hole is the same so you you know axle is straight. Then check caster and adjust upper arm if needed. Then double check trac bar bolts are tight and that the factory mounting hole isn't oblong
I have the IRO 6.5" long arms front and rear and love it, not impressed with the Doetch tech shocks though. Another good upgrade is to replace the arm bushing on top of the front diff with one of IRO's flex joints. I'm loving the WJ content, keep it up.
I like the idea of a joint for that upper. Might have to take you advice on that
How do you like the 6.5"? I've been debating the 4" or 6.5. I have a 2" with 31" tires and I want to be able to chain up and have a little more suspension. I'm worried about power and ride quality. With my 31's the jeep still has really good power and it rides a little stiffer but not bad. I have a set of brand new 33 I could use with the 6.5 but I'm worried it will be more sluggish.
@@jeremyhenning6831 I like it plenty, it rides good and flexes great. I'm on 35s and the power is somewhat diminished but I think a re-gear should fix that.
What did it cost?
I want to do this to my WJ but... cubic dollars. I have sooooo many other things I'd rather spend money on.
That transfer case tail housing is long. Any plans to swap it out? If there is any option (like on TJs)?
I plan on eventually swapping it out for the 231 in my xj. That way I'll have 2wd as well
