This 1978 Ferrari 308 is one of the most interesting and unique builds we've ever featured. The original, carbureted engine was removed (it now lives on a shelf at ATS) and a "700 crank horsepower Frankenstein engine made from at least seven dead Ferrari's" with a bottom end by legendary Ferrari tuner Bob Norwood, sits inside. Highlights include high-compression forged pistons, 348 cylinder heads, 328 oiling sytem, sequential EFI management, and a single Precision 6265 Turbo with ATS's custom air-to-water intercooler. There's an upgraded suspension, big brakes, and proper tires to back it all up, and though not exactly built for the race track, this car's performance is staggeringly good by any measure. In fact, the engine is good for quite a bit more, if there were a reasonable clutch that could handle it. This 308 is right at the top of the favorite drives we've ever taken.

This is an amazing build. I've always felt that the 308 is one of the most beautiful cars of all-time, but they lacked a bit in performance. This is the perfect solution and Bob Norwood is a legend.
I own a '76 Vetroresina. That's the version to have. The Fibreglass body is 200kg lighter than the later Steel Bodies. The Carburated Engine also has 50hp more and 50nm higher torque than the later fuelinjected Cars. Love this Car.
Considering its vintage the 308 didn't really lack much. It was equal in performance to the 355 in most rrespects and better than 348. Ferrari is not a all out powerful car and it wasn't supposed to be. It's strenght's were handling, braking, good looks and fun to drive. I always really appreciated the Maranello idea of a sports car, and I love the way that the engine sound and powerband was recognized as something that makes a car fun.
@@kevinhayes4508 Lol. Equal in performance to a 355? Not even close.
328 GTB was the pinnacle...cleaned up the lines of the 308 and had 270hp
gotta agree with the 308 being one of the most beautiful cars because i consider the 288 gto as the most beautiful ferrari
Blue is such an underrated color for Ferraris.
jbk94 blue is the best color period
I like this color blue though
Specifically this blue
Totally, ever seen a metallic light blue 348? stunning
Lancia Lord blue is the best.
It still looks and sounds great. Revs nicely. Shifts smoothly with a distinct click. This is a very Ferrari-like tune. Nicely done.
As much as I love to see regular people bring their cars that while cool, aren't usually totally insane cars. But a 308 with a stupid amount of power? Well I can't think of a much cooler car. The 308 bodystyle to me is the best looking Ferrari they ever produced. To see any Ferrari heavily modified is great, people seem to want them stock, but a 78 308? Oh man....
true about the "best looking"
He also tightened up the looks, the wheels look a touch too big diameter but otherwise it's sweet.
Agreed. 308,328,355 and 512BB are favorites
These cars are SOOOO Small. Parked next to a 2007 Nissan Sentra, it's 18 inches shorter in length and the roof of the 308 is at the top of the side view mirror. 572HP is massive in that small of a car.
I remember parking next to one at a car show in my 240sx and the nissan looked gigantic in comparison! very weird when you see them in person just how tiny they are.
I'm 6'1" and was so disappointed sitting in one at a salvage yard many many years ago. I had to idea of an engine swap but I'm just too big to fit comfortably. There was no way I was going to fit.
But doesn't Matt claim to be 6'3" That doesn't really make sense unless the seat rails are modified to be lower somehow.
Yeah I guess I aint gonna buy one of those when I make it in basketball (7'1", i could not drive a bmw 5 series e39)
It's funny watching Matt's head bounce off the headliner!
Man, how baller is this? This is one of the all time great cars on this channel for sure!
This is what I would call a sleeper Ferrari. No one would expect a hundred horsepower more than a F40 and exact the same power as a 458 Italia in a 80's Ferrari 308. What a treat, thank you Matt!
got more power than a 458, more like an f12, cause it's 570 wheel hp
Oh yeah, exactly! My bad.
570 whp is almost 700 hp or a little more crank hp so it’s much more than a 458. 458 only put 440-460 hp to the wheels stock
Looks amazing. Sounds fantastic. A cool build with a cool story. One of the best One Takes so far on this channel with this classic Italian beauty.
What a fabulous concept, especially since so few Ferraris are modified because owners terrified of impacting residuals. Well done that man.
Matt you were never a broke college student 😂
Luke Mezzatesta 'relatively broke'
Yeah I was laughing my ass off at that when he said that.
Yea whose he kidding lol
Wow I would like the have a talk with that owner and his tuner friends. Remarkable work on that engine. Great skills involved. Not easy at all doing what they did and he is very humble about it.
This 308 is absolutely beautiful! Fantastic restraint on the part of the owner keeping it mostly stock. That blue is an awesome vacation from the red that are on most.Good show to the owner!
Very nice, I love seeing tuned Ferraris, usually it's just the Porsche guys going nuts.
Great vid. Amazing how this 308 is so timeless in it's aesthetic...beautiful.
Best onetake car in ages. Fell in love with the Ferrari in 1980, like everyone else, when Thomas Magnum, takes off sideways on the grass in the opening credits. Great shape to the 308, but it is an old car with unreliable everything. But to get to take one apart and rebuild it with modern components would be a great project to work on. Doesn't sound as good as the f355 Berlinetta in the one takes in the canyons though. Possibly the best sounding car of any of the onetakes. Great set of cars and video from Aaron and Matt.
seen the 348 video? best car ever
God I love the 308. They are going up in value now so I'll never get one lol. This is super unique. Love the build! This is probably one of my favorite OneTakes I think.
This car is the proof that red is NOT the best Ferrari color and that turbo noises are the best.
Tom T. I’ve always loved blue and black Ferrari’s over red.
What a fantastic looking car the 308/328 was.
THIS! SO MUCH THIS!! I've always thought these things were gorgeous and man...570whp would make it as fast as it looks. Friggin LOVE IT!!
chuckled @10:31. Can't get enough views of those body lines and that color. Spectacular! Would love to see this particular vehicle driven out in California with those top panels popped on one of the canyon routes.
Coolest 308 I've ever seen! Great looking and wild power!!!
It's amazing what some wheels and some suspension work can do to improve the look of a car. The jump in horsepower is nice too.
You better start taping some more One Takes.. When great video's like this don't exist anymore i'm really gonna be upset.. Thanks for all your hard work bro!!!
Oh my god looks and sounds amazing now i want one
My father actually met Enzo Ferrari when he bought his 308 a long time ago. He actually got an engravedmetal platewith our family name on it in the car
Expensive but what a beautiful Ferrari. Congratulations to the owner...pretty sweet!
But does it shoot flames?
Entrepreneurs in Cars no :-( I tried, we even left the fuel on during decel in the ecu, but alas no flames.
Eventually.
This gang is all about the motor. It helps that proper tuning houses did these jobs (Callaway and ATS).
I will cry my self to sleep for a month when these one takes end 😓
Hey Matt... it would be cool (at least for track runs) to see your speed, RPM's etc...
The K Man I’ll be fine just with a tachometer shot, wouldn’t mind seeing the rpms and see where he slowly gets used to each car he drives
It’d be hard to do for old cars, but for OBD2 cars there are systems for it. Jason from Engineering Explained has one.
Tough luck, he completed filming the last one-take back in December. You're suggestion will forever go unanswered.
aiGeis like forever?
The K Man yes
I saw this car in the background on the lotus video a few weeks back and have been checking everyday for this one take! Thanks!
That turbo spool sounds amazing
Two of my favourite things. Boost, and Ferraris. Have experienced both, but never together. What a great car.
Hope you rock the 1million subs soon, you deserve it 100%.
Oh boy! Have I been waiting for this one..
Amazing! An older turbo Ferrari. Love it!
Probably one of my favorites to date. What a ride.
For those who like to know more check out ATS Racing website, the MR2 Matt is going to review is there + a guide to make your own.
PS: I've checked and they dont supply the money for you to build the car, they sell some parts tho. There is always a catch ain't it? If anyone can lend me about 30G plus a MR2 I would be happy
EDIT: The total cost was about 12k. I lied about the 30K. They also have all the parts needed, where to get them and why get them. Cool stuff.
LazyRock
In that case, you could get a car and be about done for that $30k.
Not bad, then
Good grief. That thing sounds fucking awesome. And, that gated-shifter, and coIor? Mama mia! I wish I had a neighbor like the owner.
The most fun I've had watching a UA-cam video in a long time. Thanks ATS and thanks Matt. That's such a sick, left-field car.
I always skip watch commercials, because I hope Matt will notice and think, "Hey, lets keep doing one takes. That one stranger doesn't like watches."
I watch all the other ads as "payment" for the awesome free content.
I'm not claiming this is based in logic or reality.
That's my dream car right there... 500+ HP mid-engined and sexy looking.
damn, wish the owner stayed in here he sounded like he really loved the car
Phil Rindone thanks! I really do.
I like and appreciate how he re measured the higher front fender well/shock assembly to now match the rear assembly...looks proper now. As we all know the original car ride was high in front and lower in rear if ONLY looking at fender hieght compared to tire height...big gap in front compared to rear and you addressed and fixed in properly. Nice work!!!
looks badass w/ that 288 GTO front spoiler
Bad ass car !! Love the color, the two tone and the wheels and the sound is just so awesome ! I loved these cars as a kid and no doubt influenced me in my love towards C4 corvettes . Two thumbs up !!
I remember your ZR1 from CorvetteForum a couple years ago. One of the most beautiful C4 on the planet.
Remoh19 thx very much I appreciate the compliment ! :)
Man you were right around the corner from me. Hope you enjoyed the state! Take some of your cali brethren back with you lol i kid i kid.
Having my morning dump while watching the latests episode of The Smoking Tire. Very nice.
C'mon, Matt. We all know you were never a broke college kid. We all know your dad is a big Ralph Lauren exec, haha. I bet you took off your Rolex for that ad read and put it back on afterwards, I get you've got money to make but don't try to sell me on shit watches you wouldn't wear yourself.
Dan #burnt
He's wearing an AP Royal Oak Offshore in this video lol
Yep, wearing a $43,000 watch in this video, dying that you saw that right after the watch ad.
Everyone of this dudes cars are amazing. So glad you were able to showcase and drive these things.
Now I’m just excited to see the mr2 ! I’m a Toyota fan for sure
I've watched this video twice in the past year.
This is one of the best looking cars EVER!!!!!!
non-red Ferrari ... instant like.
I've finally found somebody else that feels the way -I- do about red Ferraris. :)
my favorite color is yellow... not so rare, but so beautiful.
@@WRXBase there are a few of us. In the 308, a darker blue than the one on this car but NOT a 512 BB blue; a gun metal dark grey and black of course.
NOTE - My only criticism of this amazing 1978 308 GTSi is the Ferrari Boxer blue and paint configuration.
I have seen pictures of a white all over 288 GTO. It looked amazing. I don't know who real it was other than the owner claiming it cost him US$30,000 and used officially approved Ferrari paint. The white 288 GTO looked amazing and it instantly caught my attention.
So nice to see someone with great mechanical sympathy treating a test car right with the proper warm up and warm down. Respect.
This makes up for the Lotus. What a wonderful sound!
Love turbo sounds 😍
amazing car and another brilliant one take. I love it when matt genuinely likes the cars and smiles like it's his birthday.
Always loved these Ferraris - just the gated shifter and that sound when you put it in gear snick snick oh man’! 8500 rpm too!
Think his 308 is crazy, the mr2 is nuts!
Favorite car so far for me
What an awesome car! it actually sounds like my 2zz turbo powered Lotus
What a BEAUTIFUL car! Thanks for the review. WOW!
Such a great build! Aaron really is a great guy, and this car says it all. Beautiful!
amazing project! Eargasm 100 % !
That noise is pure gold.
Norwood also makes twin turbo kits for Testarossas, so if you get a chance, try out one of those... ;-) Just be sure to wear your Depends.
omg the sounds that car makes
I'm no really even a Ferrari fan, but this thing is a beautiful built, and this might be one of the best one takes yet!
I had a 308 for about a year but was forced to get rid of it for financial woes. I really wanted to do an NA build on it. I frankly think the 308's have a great classic Italian sportcar feel. I tried to imagine what 570whp would feel like in the car and frankly I couldn't imagine it. My supercharged z06 made that exact same number at was ferocious. The video does make the power delivery much more linear appearing and very controllable. I always felt though, 350hp naturally aspirated 308 would've been a great car. That steering though...yeah...80's Ferrari's...not the best at all. Steering wheel has no tilt, it's at a funky angle and heavy. Testarossa was real bad....I used to feel like I pulled muscles steering that thing at low speed.
Testarossa's had Flat-12's
Yeah, I think 350hp +/- is a good number for a ripping, NA sports car. Like the 997 Carrera S or one of the rebuilt Singer 911's.
Wow, that's just PERFECT!
Matt, your reactions were priceless
man, gonna miss the daily videos =[ sad for these to end
Agree, especially seeing Matt on form and in a really interesting car!
logan86123 yeah he was really in his zone for this one, great car, nothing sketchy, and seems like he woke up on the right side of the bed
Wow Matt! That is really special. It does sound a bit different, but you can hear a bit of the classic 308 trying to come through. I bet the power is just crazy. Love the color too... You live a charmed life my friend :)
The sound of that turbo is just so amazing. Whooooo
Im in love with Matt's Audemars Piguet
My neighbor actually owns a red 308 GTS, always keeps it covered up and takes really good care of it. Respect to this owner for his build!
This may very well be THE MOST GORGEOUS car I've seen you drive to date...?
My 328 would love an extra 300 horses.
Magnum PI never drove a 308 like that! Looks like that thing rips. I have always loved the 308. What an amazing build.
Great to listen to a guy that really knows his build.
That is a beeeeeeautiful Ferrari! beautiful engine and exhaust sound, just the right amount of turbo noises to drive all day long!
That car sounds AMAZING!
One my favorite Ferraris. Love this car.
What a beautiful ferrari. 👏
Sound is a pure delight .
My favorite sound was the gated shifter. I knew this was going to be a good one before he ever headed out the track. Cool car.
this car has aged so well, still stunning, this build is awesome !
Never been a fan of the 308 but this is one hell of a good-looking car.
Ridiculously beautiful build, Matt!
WOW! Listening to the interior sound track to this car, sounds so much like the Need For Speed game!! Nice turbo noise, BOV and the metallic clink when shifting!!
Missed opportunity to ask the owner "What's the retail on one of those?" and hope for the appropriate response.
More than you can afford.
That car sounds like its straight out of a 70's or 80's racing movie, where they add in car sound to make them sound better. That is a great build.
Beautiful car beautiful color choice and fantastic soundtrack
Fell in love again with this car again.
Sounds like 2 4AGE stuck together and turboed.
Oh christ, now I hear it too.
And with what we know about suspension systems now! Dream builds!
This is the first 308 I have seen that doesn't have the blue puffs of smoke when being pushed. Nice car.
That's a beautiful car! Nicely done!!!
Im blown away by this car, it sounds AMAZING
When on the track Matt can you please put a GoPro on the speedo.
Such a handsome car
Wow... that sounds totally different yet really wicked. And I love the 288-style front light treatment.
