This far, my favorite hammer is a ball peen I got at a cheap tool store that I reground into a rounding hammer. I use a 2# cross peen from Blacksmith supply for lighter work and an even smaller claw for delicate work. Plus a myriad of specialty hammers.
Point is, you don’t have to scour flea markets and garage sales (unless you really want to) to find some thing hard to hit something hot.

My first hammer was a rounding hammer I made when I took a class from a local blacksmith. Yes it was more expensive than buying one, but I learned a lot and it has my initials in it.
I absolutely loved the advice John. My first job was in an ornamental iron shop in 71. Hammers, and hammers you can handle, have always been key.

Less than a year in the craft and I already have a wide selection of hammers . My go to is a 2.5 lbs French cross pien
"all new tools are made with old tools" I wish I could remember who I heard this from to attribute it to.
Couldn't agree more! I ended up buying a Brazeal-style hammer last year, after using the same cross peen for years, and now rarely use anything else. It fits my hand, and though it's heavier than I was used to I get lots more work done with it each heat, and when I attended a training session with Brian he actually approved of it!

Two of my favorite hammers are a couple old champion rounding hammers that I got at a garage sale and an antique store for $2 a hammer head. Hammers are not my favorite tool to make so if I can find a good deal on one I don't pass it up!

Gotta to say it: "Engineer's hammer"? I've never seen or anybody have ever seen an engineer wielding a hammer, or even close to one, unless it is a drawing on a computer screen... and you know it!
Does the weight of the hammer matter? Lets say you can pick up any hammer no problem, would choosing a heavier hammer be any more beneficial than a lighter one?
A heavier hammer will be harder to control and have a greater risk of injury. Most people prefer a 2 1/2 - 3 pound hammer

Wonderful advice! But to show off and artificially boost your ego, you have to have one of those famous blacksmith forged hammers with fullered necks and wide cheeks that cost $100+. 😀
