    Is this the Quest replacement we were always looking for? Or is just another plastic paperweight?

    No matter how much people claim the link cable and air link are good now... Virtual Desktop has been the *only* PCVR option to net me good results even with Quest. So this isn't really a downgrade. As it is the integral experience of using any standalone headset out right now is highly dependent on third parties.

    • @scribblenaut100
      @scribblenaut100 Рік тому

      I have used them both, but. I must say the airlink is better in terms of "just slap on the quest and off you go". It is really that quick and easy. If I had to use the Pico 4 yeah I'd use VD too. But for quest? Airlink 100%

    • @AyaKho
      @AyaKho Рік тому

      @@scribblenaut100 I dont understand this perspective. In either case its a button press away and the physical aspect is the same in either case. The PC-side software on VD is superior and lighter. Oculus' PC software can be charitably described as unreliable at best. While it achieves better images it is finicky, often laggy, mess when dealing with VR instances outside Oculus' own ecosystem and is not near as customizable on-the-fly as Virtual Desktop is.
      Neither airlink or the link cable operate like mature technologies and the fact I get better results out of Virtual Desktop than with the link cable even with massive tinkering, something that should be impossible given the massively higher transfer speeds, lends me to fully believe Meta just wanted to be able to slap PCVR on the box to increase sales and has no intent on their version of this technology ever being mature.

      @@AyaKho ease of use. Is all you need to know. All this customizing stuff is nice I suppose. But not needed. So I don't feel the need to use VD when Airlink does what I want. And nothing more.
      The software isn't janky on my end. I haven't had issues with it yet.
      I just put on the quest. Turn it on and connect to my woken PC. Works perfectly fine until I am done.

    I live South Korea and saw this for sale for what is about 380USD for the 256GB version. I heard about 3 free games for Black Friday and went back and bought it. There were no free games, at least not for me on activation. Probably not a deal for this region. That said, I'm coming to this device from a Lenovo WMR device. The Pico 4 is an upgrade. Much clearer text, vastly lighter and better tracking. The shape of the controls is great for putting your hands together. Better for holding virtual guns, better for fishing and working the reel etc. I didn't even bother with the given streaming app and just instantly bought Virtual Desktop.
    I have an older rig, but new Wi-Fi 6 in my room. This is probably where this headset really shines. Half-life Alyx just works really well with the controllers and looks amazing. I feel no lag. Kayak VR Mirage is another title that looks amazing the the controllers work as if set for the Pico 4. The controllers vibrate when your paddles hit the water, so its just really immersive. Plus once you go the PC streaming route you get access to Steam VR sales. This then lets you buy AAA titles for 2 to 5 times cheaper than the stand alone store (those prices need to come down). I'm so impressed with PCVR streaming I've finally decided to upgrade my trusty 1060 graphics card to a 3060. I never saw the need before, but PC VR has given me a reason now. I find this headset very comfortable. I'm afraid you just have a giant head :). Cue Mike Myers monologue.That boy's got a giant head. It's like an orange on a toooothpick. I don't have any of the fitting problems you have said and find it very comfortable to wear, order a usb c to 3.5 Jack so that sorts the lack of no Bluetooth headphones and yes virtual desktop is the way to go like with all stand alone VR head sets from what I understand.

      Cool to see you got yourself into VR through this headset! As with the pcvr, it should be an option to have a solid wired connection that you can use to get consistent quality to the pico, I had to explicitly buy a new router for VD and I imagine a lot of people are not fortunate enough to have proper 5Ghz wifi connection setup in their room, it was just a bummer for me to see that the wired connection was worse than virtual desktop and I would love to see improvement on that field as I do not mind a cable but love some good quality

      I sent my pico 4 back and kept quest 2. The head tracking is slightly jittery, the lenses are not edge to edge clear at all, my quest 2 is better, the facial interface is appalling but that will get fixed in time by vr cover. It's nice and light and the fov is only a tiny bit more than quest 2 I got 96 quest and 98 pico in steam test environment. If you ha e no headset I would probably still get pico for the lightness and sharper image, but if you have quest 2 don't bother.

      check MRTV showdown.
      and its simply because of the hardware..
      You have so many more pixels on Pico4.
      Pico4 got 9.33 mio pixels and you have a PPI at extreme 1193 pixels pr square inch.
      Quest2 is like the old cardboard mobilescreen approach with one single screen . it got 3.5 mio pixels and a PPI at 487
      Meta Pro got 6.9 mio pixels.
      IMO Pico4 is likely beiing subsidized heavily wit a priceloss, and the BOM cost is likely way higher then the inner value its being sold at.. nothing new.. Meta did the same in a period.. and its been more then norm then not on consoles.

    Informative, but I must say Virtual Desktop is a must have whether Quest or Pico 4. It really doesn't matter which seems better through their built in solutions in my opinion. Virtual Desktop is an absolute bargain and it's developer stays unbelievably ahead of the curve. As soon as new capabilities were made available for the Quest and Quest 2 that could enhance the wireless experience, Guy was putting them to use in an update.
    So I can't imagine for PCVR that the Pico isn't leagues better. The mic through virtual desktop is better than the Quest Mic so who cares if PICO software can't compete with virtual desktop. It's hard to imagine how the Pico could possibly be more uncomfortable than the Quest 2 but I cannot argue your experience without one of my own. It seems as though through virtual desktop the streaming performance is equal so I don't know how it is possible for the Pico 4's better FOV to not give it the clear edge.
    Obviously someone with a large Quest library will find the Pico 4 to be a tough sell, and people with borderline VR capable PC's might hesitate to not have access to meta's stand alone library, but as a budget PCVR headset the PICO 4 should be the new King. Elsewhere a reviewer noted that the Pico 4 displays are not quite as bright as the Quest displays but also that he could only notice this by directly switching back and forth between the two. AKA it's a non-issue for those who don't want it to be an issue.
    But I digress. What is most important is an honest review, so thank you for that. Also comfort is apparently extremely subjective as I find both Quests to be very uncomfortable with after market mods being critical to find something more tolerable with truly comfortable not being an option at all. That's my experience yet there are those who swear it's better than an Index, a headset I can use for far longer in a single session than I probably ever should.

    • @MBaderson
      @MBaderson  Рік тому +3

      Virtual Desktop for sure is a work of brilliance! And I am super happy it does the job so well, I just wanted to state my overall point from a Pico focussed view, and a wired connection for instance should be a consistent source of pcvr throughput where even that was lacking so much due to compression :(
      As for comfort, yeah that is subjective and is the reason I made a point of having issues with my large head in the past, I am sure there are ways to wear it a little better but so far my preference is on the index any day still
      Overall a great little headset! Especially for this price but I also cannot wait what other companies will do to answer to this!
      In any case I am glad you enjoyed the video and maybe I will see you next time :)

      I bought Pico 4 and i'm very disapointed. I'm using Quest 2 from one month for PCVR with USB3 cable. I spent a lot of time to find out the best configuration (FPS and Quality). And now a lot of YT and internet hype for Pico 4 with Virtual Desktop (aka game changer and so on..) It's a bullshit for me. I've bought Pico 4 few days ago for better FOV, resolution and overall "image quality". Tested everything (WiFi6, USB-C etehernet card, USB3 cable, Streaming Assistant and Virtual Desktop (Godlike on my RTX 4090). Sorry, there is no way to have even close what i have on Quest 2 with OpenXR Toolkit and Open Composite with USB3 cable (I mean FPS and overall image quality not FOV of course). Now I will return my Pico 4, stay with Quest 2 and in the time where I wait for Quest 3 I will try HP Reverb G2 V2 because have also better spec then Q2 but can work same straight way like Q2 (OXRT, OC) without this sh**ty heavy SteamVR which Pico 4 use. Try your configuratiion with Virtual Desktop instead Streaming Assistant and You will see much better quality and performance, yes it's true. But again, for me even VD it's not to close what i've got from OXRT and OC. I wanted to have the same quality and performance on Pico 4, and even better due to the spec, but it's not possible until Pico 4 will not fully natively supports/uses Open XR.

    good review! although for your problem with comfort, from how i've seen you wearing it, you should let the back of the headset sit slightly higher on the back of your head, and rely more on the top strap to support it, first placing the front of the pico 4 on your face, then sliding the back until it feel comfortable without going too low, and then tightening the top strap to fix the balance how you set it.

    I will get my Pico4 next week and without any second thoughts, the first software I will buy for it is Virtual Desktop. I use this apk ever since I have my Oculus Go. It is the best to me and I sometimes forget to turn it off when I'm done playing with the Quest2. Don't want to go to the Quest menu.
    Then of course, you need a Wifi6 router. They are cheap nowadays and if you are interested in playing PCVR titles, thats the road to take in my humble opinion. No device works perfect out of the box. For stand alone it is ok, but if you want extra, you have to make those steps.
    You mentioned the sound was lacking? You are the first one who said this.
    Well.... my latest phone also didn't come with a headphone jack. But already long before that I switched to Bluetooth headphones. Recently I bought some very good earbuds and it is so nice to work in the garden with those buds. I even can let my phone 10 meters away from me and still enjoy good sound.
    So I will try to connect them with the Pico4....
    But as for now, the Pico4 will be only my "bridge" headset until the Quest 3 comes to the market.... that will be the replacement of my Quest 2 and hopefully it comes with new controllers that have some of the features of the Quest Pro controllers....
    The Pico4 will be mainly used for PCVR gaming...

    soundcore vr p10 works great for sound, it plugs into the usb-c plug and even has a passthrough so if you want you can still charge etc. ..and yes you need to have a decent router and virtual desktop. I am waiting for a better face interface from a 3rd party however, both for comfort and get your eyes closer to the lenses, thus increase FOV. I did manage to frankenstein a very decent solution, though it is slightly less comfortable than the already meh comfort of the standard interface, it does increase the fov by a good bit. My biggest gripe so far only playing around a bit in a few pc games is that the controls are not on par with a pcvr headset. For instance in Superhot VR, shooting and punching works great, but it is almost impossible to throw things. They seem to go in all sorts of random directions. Using Steam VR environment you can pull up stuff like a paint tool, however choosing colors does not seem to work, so it always defaults to black.

We can safely assume it will also have the same kind of horrible facial interface the Q2 also had. It also won't have eye and face tracking. Returned my Pico 4. Comfort is really bad. The face padding is really stiff and wont follow the face very well leaking light from the sides that bounces on the pancake lenses.
    The side straps are hard plastic and stiff and in the way of bigger headphones/headsets. The best IPD setting hurts my nose because the lenses are so big.
    Tracking is jerky, especially in SteamVR and even though I have Wifi6 running at 1300mpbs on a 5ghz channel with 0.3% utilization I can't go over 40mpbs in Virtual Desktop/steamvr before things gets unplayable.
    The store is barren, the headsets "smart" features only look for PCs on the same subnet for streaming and thus does not support multi subnets etc.
    Resolution and FOV is good though. The controllers are kind of meh. I felt the light rings were in the way of some racket sports games. Also don't agree with the button setup.

    Out of the box it feels like an Apple product in terms of build quality and materials, the motors on the IPD feel like this cost 2k. The face mask is just terrible, you have to get the AMVR face plate then it’s the most comfy headset I’ve ever used. the audio speaker ports are nowhere near anyones ears, just stupid. I use VD over a 4.5m 20gbps subculture cable that goes to a usb Ethernet with power pass through so I can use it without any battery drain always stays at 100% No streaming artefacts at all I stream it at 100mbps. Controllers are amazing as is the tracking. I am this weekend in the middle of designing and 3D printing audio shields that direct the sound to your ears. If you cup your hands over it and your ear the sound is fantastic! So I’m making clip on convex shields that cup your ears and the port. All in all I’d say it’s the best all round headset on the market with a few addons. OLED would be nice but not needed on most games. Fov is fantastic., clarity is fantastic on the whole image, pancake lenses are game changers, no godray flares. Light weight, beautifully made, Just has a few design flaws like the audio position and the face mask. Also quite a lot of geese have wavey lenses to various degrees, my left lens has some wavy ness when looking around. I] only noticeable if I’m looking for it. I think it’s just the artefact of pancake lens production must be hard to get perfect.

  • @rawdog7220

    I've come from the original htc vive.. The Pico 4 is way better in many ways. The Rez, the clarity, the weight, the wireless capability etc. The only issue is latency when in using virtual desktop for all my steam vr games. It's very small - 35 to 40ms over WiFi 6 with a dedicated router, but it is noticeable in fast paced games. Also, the bandwidth of 5G WiFi 6 does require a fair amount of compression, so the clarity is not quite on par with the stand alone games. But this all said, it's still way clearer and nicer to use than the vive, a definite upgrade 👍
