    I started dove hunting when I was 10. I can only imagine what would happen nowdays if someone saw three kids walking down the road with shotguns...

      That's the truth! There's still some parts of the country where no one would bat an eye but I'm sure they're a little harder than when you started

      When I tell people my dad and uncle use to turn my cousin and I loose with shotguns and a revolver in a John Deere gator or an old dodge 1ton that was an airplane tug truck for the military in a last life at the age of 10 on my uncles farm they act like my childhood was traumatic. I remember having a tons of fun and finding out what freedom felt like.

    Great 101 dove hunting video Thomas.The best tip to estimate that Max range of 40-45 yards you were speaking of I got from a guide in Mexico of 50+years experience. He pointed out that the bead of most all shotguns will cover up a flying dove at that range... take an empty shell box step off that range put your bead on it and, there you are! Of course the bead in any kind of wing shooting plays "no part" in success but it sure helps the beginner dove hunters.
    One thing not mentioned but important to dove hunting, particularly to a novice is shoot an open choke... IC or even skeet.
    Sorry for the book!

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Sly! I'd never thought of using that method for figuring out range but I can see how that would work. I went back and forth about including a point about chokes in this video but decided to leave it simple and cover it in my next video.

    Great tip of using a marker as your range limit. Lots of beginners don't realize how far 40 yards are.

      @@HokeOutdoors Thanks! Scouting the past few weeks is gonna put us directly in their flight path. Morning and evening flights literally yield tens of thousands of mourning, white wing, and Eurasian doves. Our group of six will likely limit out in about 30 minutes if we take our time. 😜 Time to stack em!

      Much appreciated! I’d say at least 100 yards with dove hunting but 150 yards would be even better. Unfortunately on some public fields you’ll see plenty of hunters setup 20 yards from other hunters

    I'm looking to start dove hunting. I'm trying to learn as much as possible. How affective is a 16 ga? I hear about 12 and 20, but what about the middle of those?

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  5 років тому +3

      16 gauges are plenty effective for doves. They used to be one of the most common gauges used for wing shooting actually. Unfortunately they fell out of favor when the 12 gauge became so popular. If you can find shells and a 16 gauge to shoot though I'd definitely go for it!

    • @lethalweeaboo2239
