- Here you can see the comparison between the previz (previsualization, kinda like a story board) and the final Video.
The previz is used for planning out the shots and setting up the timing and beats before creating the actual movie. Since the previz is made out of simple objects and just the basic shapes, it is fast and easy to render and iterate different ideas and concepts. Especially in the edit, you can see the final movie early on and decide, if the edit and the story beats and the music work well together.
As you can see, mostly the final movie is very similar to the previz. But during the production, there are still some things that can change. Sometimes it's the timing and sometimes even whole shots get replaced because in the end they didn't work as intended.

I see many commenting on it like it's a comparison between two different art styles.
It's not an old vs. new or cartoon vs. Realistic.
It is the storyboard vs. the final film!
I guess not everyone reads the description. Sorry for explaining it badly.
Previz is basically the animated storyboard for the film. A guideline and blueprint for the film. After which the final movie is created.
I just happened to have the original character as a stand in for the real one.
But everything else is just a rough block out to see if the shot works.

im impressed cause its not just 3D animation, its video animation. The scene change, the shaking, the moves, everything is incredible.

Got to say, as much as I said about the old design, (bright and colorful, but still intimidating) this new, damaged design is so good. The brass-esq body with SO MUCH damage done to it. I mean, Storm Eagle crashed in an airbase that was mid flight and he didn't look like he took as much damage as Spark Mandrill. Really makes you feel that this thing was a hard fight to take down.
And the animation. My god. Just keeps getting better. You feel this thing is a titan on it's last legs. Yet, as damaged as it is and as close to death it is, it is still a beast to be feared. Catching and crushing a metal bird. Denting and bending a steel door. And when it grabs on to those power cables, the overwhelming power of it all flowing into him, the pain he portrays is enthralling. You can't look away There's that moment of question. Will this kill him? Will he just explode.
Then the plant goes dark. There's that moment of silence. Was it too much? Then the eyes awaken. Then the shoulder lights. Then it unleashes it's rage. This thing just drained a power station meant to supply a future city. All of that power now focused on a single target.
As much as I like the old design, I don't think the same amount of emotion and gravitas could have been achieved with it. This grittier, more realistic design is what was needed.
I like the two versions! The second remember the game version, it's amazing!

It's not a question of keeping one or the other. The bottom right is just a storyboard. I'll always go for the realistic.

Looking at the previz rough side by side shows a major difference. I mean mostly the franchise is mostly cartoon and anime animated, and seeing that style in a heavy scene like this dose kind've feel off. Mostly because of the body language of sparkmandrill. Despite it being it being rough though I understand why it was made like this.
All in all what I'm saying is what I saw in the rough, cartoon mandrill felt more innocent in my opinion compared BAY madrill (or realistic mandrill as its seen) which fits better in the atmosphere of the scene because of the style alone.
And honestly its still my favorite episode because while there is some sympathy in the Bay mandrill model version, the tension and intimidation of the scene tells me he let the power go to his head and is at point of no return (almost savage in a way but thats what I see) and really makes me wonder what he'll do next.
Can't wait for Ku-wangers episode.
It's actually not two versions or styles I'm comparing.
The bottom right is the previsualization for the film. So the animated storyboard or a blueprint to help with the concept and to see if the idea actually works before working on the actual film. This just happens to have the original design as a placeholder for the realistic one 😉
