  • join me as we explore Edinburgh's standing stones and only stone circle. These monuments to the past are often hidden in plan sight and in alot of cases you wouldn't know they where there unless you lived in the area, often they have a lot at play the political (there are often high status individuals buried amongst them) the spiritual (signs of sacrifice and ritual) and the scientific (some stones are aligned with certain constellations and astrological events. They also act as way markers, boundary stones and monuments to historical events

    Excellent video I must visit them all. Interestingly my sister worked for historic Scotland in Orkney. They have a lot of standing stones you would love it. Part of her job was convicing farmers not to remove stones too make it easier too plow freilds. Or builders not too move to build houses. Or even use stone too help fix walls. Thankfully all remained on her 10 year watch. She probabaly did other things but I like the idea of her in a field at night time with bins watching the stones. Take care lad. Px

    I'm a historian and new to Edinburgh. I arrived here from the US in May. I'm still unsure where many of these places that you mention are located, but it looks like I'll need to do a bit of exploring in the coming days and find out. Thank you for the great video and the history of each stone. Love it!

      Bit of a shame someone appears to have driven a car into the retaining wall of the cairn. Lots of interesting standing stones in and around Edinburgh

    We have a standing stone in Niddrie, just off Greendykes Road, I belive it was something to do with the small cemetery that's there, sadly it seems to have been forgotten hidden by overgrown ivy and bushes when they are cut back in the summer you can see the stone and the cemetery when walking along the footpath to the bus stop or houses

      Hi Diane you'd be glad to hear I'm actually working with the Niddrie standing stone with a group of locals to bring it back to the community and work with the site as investigate it better with some community archaeological investigations.
      It's a fascinating site and is actually a neolithic standing stone of around 6000yeaers. The graveyard was built next to it in I think the 18th century as part of the Wochope Niddrie house estate. Its Similar to the liberton stone in stone type yet unlike the liberton stone, incredibly in the original context having never been moved over its history. ☺️ I'll have to send a picture of it too as took a site visit to it yesterday.

    My husband and I have been visiting Edinburgh for decades, and I was never aware of these! We are planning to come over again this December (touch wood!) and I am going to try to visit some of these then.

    You missed one at Newbridge. On the otherside of the Newbridge roundabout next to the A8. Its on the left as you approach the roundabout. The industrial building had to be built round it but its very visible from the road.

      That's right couldn't get near due to the motor way and it being on private ground. Its meant to be connected to Huly hill. There's also the cat stone which is inside the grounds of the airport.

    There must have been many, many more, now lost. There is another stone at the Inch, albeit it's antiquity is debatable. Located outside the residential home run by the council.

    • @OurHistoryYourstory
      @OurHistoryYourstory  2 роки тому

      Most of them built into the old houses or used as fence posts or built over. I seen a couple whose antiquity was questioned or they where on private ground. I hope you enjoyed the video

    Of course, you couldn't get to the Cat Stane, which is inside the airport.

      Exactly I wish I could have. If I remember rightly it's inscribed and is a burial stone
