Quick question...why did Ublock Origin change the name "whitelists" to "trusted sites" in order to support diversity and inclusion and avoid "supremacist" language? Are people right to be suspicious of sending all of their web traffic through their app if that's the kind of thinking going on there? What might they do in the future?

This is what is driving me away from all Google crap. Found I'd be in a youtube live chat, and look at the results in my other youtube account, and my comments would often not show up. Certain keywords seemed to trigger it but they had to be include other words, mostly comments involving a small put powerful and basically racist country in the middle east. Decided I'd had enough enriching such a censorship driven company. Not to mention the obvious cooperation with the govts regarding COVID.
Having been on UA-cam and uploading videos for 18 years, I can certainly say that UA-cam has gotten worse and worse over the years. Too many ads, declining video views ( subscribers are no longer notified when you post a video, and worst of all, UA-cam Shorts.
UA-cam is shooting itself by changing the algorithm. It used to be the GOAT platform for content. Back then, people could actually customize our profiles, send video responses and have a community. Sadly, those features got killed off. The internet used to be fun now it’s neutered by corporatism. What a fucking pity
Ironically, I *WAS* paying for UA-cam Premium Family Plan (since it was launched as Red) before they went to war with adblockers, but I cannot abide them doing this due to the amount of scams and malware I have to clean up for our clients because of these ads. I actively support creators, and I've no problem paying for UA-cam, but the war with adblockers I cannot abide and I will not pay UA-cam one dime until they stop this. Yes, I know I'm going to die on this hill, but I'm fine with that.

Same here. I had been paying for UA-cam Premium since the days that it was called Red. As soon as I saw what they were going to to the experience of people using ad blockers, I immediately cancelled my subscription and starting using Revanced since they thought it would be fun to kill Vanced.
I use Ad Blockers, AND YT Premium. The AdBlockers still stop several dozen requests even though I have Premium! I use 4 different AdBlockers: Ublock, AdBlock+, AdBlock, and Malwarebytes.
I'd had Premium for years. The dollar amount isn't that much for the services but what irritates me is UA-cams censorship and Googles unethical political decisions overseas, when it comes to their business model. So, from now on I'm not paying for any service from Google. And clearly, as you stated, it's obvious they don't have their users best interests at heart
I was paying for UA-cam Premium since the moment it launched as Red too. Last year, they told me they were planning to raise the price, even though nothing new was being added to the service to be worth it. In addition to that, I started seeing full screen ads for the NFL garbage UA-cam wanted to sell. Three within the span of 2 hours in the Android app. So now I have an "ad free" service that's about to increase in price and isn't ad free anymore? Heck no. I cancelled it. I split the money I was paying to UA-cam among creator's Patreon accounts instead. Also, UA-cam would do well to unbundle things from Premium. I don't want and never used Music, I don't want and never watched Originals, I don't want and never used Downloads, etc. I just wanted ad free UA-cam. They should make a lower, ad-free only tier (and make sure it's ACTUALLY ad free) that costs less for people who don't care about all that excess garbage. They were starting to turn into Amazon Prime with all these "value adds" that I don't want and will never use and don't want to pay for.
We need more competitors to UA-cam lol. The fact that I need multiple extensions to make UA-cam better is criminal. Odysee is a good alternative, but it buffers, the community is small-ish, and there are not enough features.
UA-cam is the second most popular website on the planet. No matter how much we try the multi billion dollar company that owns it can just advertise youtube harder.
For Mobile: Don't use NewPipe when you have many options such as Revanced Extended and other forks. No ads, no shorts (can be toggled), dislikes visible, sponsorblock integrated, hundreds of customization options, etc.

For android your best option is UA-cam revanced. it used to be called just vanced before but they got sued or they were about to get sued and after a while it got removed. This is i think another team that started handling the project basically it gives these features without sacrificing of any of the features and visuals like newpipe or firefox. So you'll still just be using regular youtube: ·Pop up window ·Ad block ·Background play ·Automatic sponsor, filler, intro skippers (more advanced than the extension) ·Customization ·New playback speeds ·enhanced bitrate which is only for premium ·return dislikes ·dearrow (the clickbait thumbnail remover) There's a few more neat features but these are the ones most people are interested in. I just checked and there's also DeArrow option too
UA-cam is so boring and bland now, I remember back when we had hundreds of creators and varieties of content to watch, now it’s a mess I only use UA-cam to have a video on in the background while I do something else now
UA-cam is just one example of why Big Tech corporate monopoly sucks. Dearrow doesn't serve much purpose for me, because I usually just browse my subscription feed for the latest content (recommendations is just outright broken for me), and most of channels I subscribed to stayed within a reasonable approach to the thumbnail designs, I also use Unhook to redirect my UA-cam's home page directly to my subscription feed. Times like these is when I am glad to be a tech-savvy dissident, too bad most of other users aren't.
I think utube has become a depressing I'm DYING, go fund me entity. I can't watch anymore. The world is depressing enough. For the people looking to unwind and watch entertainment utube is probably not going to be the place you want to find that. In another 2 years, after hemorrhaging more ad revenue, they will justify (ridiculously, I might add) putting ads on Premium; starting with one ad before the video, then another ad after the video, until Premium starts to look like free YT 5 years ago, while free YT itself enforces _completely_ skip-free ads, even if the ads are 5 minutes, 10 minutes or even a full hour long; with some of those ad breaks popping up every 2 minutes, 2, 3 or even 4 ads per break! Fortunately there is NewPipe, to clean up the mess _before_ a video is played.
UA-cam shouldn't have thumbnail pictures! They may look nice, but they can also be deceiving. Better just to select from some still photos from the video as the thumbnail, that way people can see what's really in the video.
I hope more Chromium browsers will have the option to run ublock origin in manifest v2 mode, and not just Brave. Otherwise I'll switch 100% to Brave (fast & blocks ads properly with manifest v2)
I also suggest the "Enhancer for UA-cam" extension. It adds a lot of useful features, like converting shorts to normal videos, adding custom video speeds, hiding shorts, video pop-up while you scroll through the comments, add keyboard shortcuts to switch between video qualities and a lot more. Also if the video thumbnail sizes are too large and you hate it, try reducing the zoom to 80-90%, the sizes do go back to decent.
I've tried it before and even made a video about it a long time ago. But I tried it again recently and wasn't as impressed. I might talk about that sometime
A quick mention: unhook does also allow you to remove shorts, so the uBlock stuff isn't totally necessary. However, since that's just a toggle away, there's definitely a case to be made as far as setting up a more-annoying-to-undo blocklist!

Watching this video just made me realize in how many different ways UA-cam went downhill. I'll definitely use the one that makes titles more informative! It's funny, seeing the new titles actually made Linus' videos seem more interesting. A great extension I can recommend is Video Speed Controller, it allows you to set a speed appropriate for the content and easily skip boring parts, sponsored segments and ads manually with the shortcuts (B & N). I don't think YT will ever crack down on that.

I am trying to limit the number of extensions in my browsers, for security reasons, but the one filtering out the sponsorships looks like a good one to have. What I hate in thumbnails is: AI images, often exaggerated, and real faces with crazy expressions, like if we were bunch of toddlers here, that they have to go to these measures to get our attention. I told youtube not to offer me a few of those already. And those pointing fingers on certain wording in the thumbnails, like if they didn't show me where to look I wouldn't know? I don't mind if your channel looks boring, I like it being real and down to Earth. Keep doing the great job.

Just yesterday, when I clicked on several YT vids, I would get a black video with the time reading 15 or 30 seconds, meaning that the filter was not working properly and ads were trying to get through. be careful. ublock is different from ublock origin. the original creator of ublock got kicked out, and is now working on ublock origin. I wouldn't recommend the current ublock as its maintainer is shady
Another option is to not use UA-cam 😅 Of course this does not work for everyone. There are alternative front-end services available like invidious, Freetube. There are also some Command Line Applications that just allow you to watch a specific video, however I'm not sure these have sponsor block, they don't have any ads or interface except the video player itself and the terminal😅

i actually made my own extension in this regard, also related to shorts, however, what it does, is when opening in a new tab it automatically opens in the normal youtube player, so one can still change playback speed, skip back in the video, etc. basically a normal video lol and most importantly does not invite to doomscrolling i'm no coder at all so still on and off trying to understand how to put it online for it to be properly installed
Pretty much every video on UA-cam now is all about getting more views and money, usually by trying to find loopholes so they can violate copyright laws and not get suspended (leeching off of copyrighted content). I mostly just listen to songs by celebrities on here. Pretty much every user-generated video here is optimized to get as much revenue as possible. Watching people on UA-cam making videos with hard work and passion isn't a thing anymore.
Don't we need a filter that never shows us AI (dead voice) narrated videos in the recomdendations or search results? I would love that because I hate robot narrated videos.
Fun fact, Return UA-cam Dislikes doesn't work for me anymore, because UA-cam has screwed up my page, so everything that was under the player Is to the right, and everything that was to the right Is under the video
The one thing UA-cam should push is preventing non-logged in users from using UA-cam. It will be very easy for them to implement. Visitors to UA-cam will just see a log in page. Those of us who log in will be unaffected by the change.
Also i removed shorts using ublock. Just adjust sliders and you can minimize loss of other ui. I lost part of the sub list (on side) which was useless anyway since got 1000 people i sub to.

@@EricMurphyxyz I just looked at the brave custom filter list settings, and they use the same syntax as adguard (idk if they use adguard under the hood), so I was able to just use the hide youtube shorts filter directly in brave.

As a result, your video has been blocked, and can no longer be played on UA-cam. This is not a copyright strike and does not affect your channel. Last week I got 11 gmails from UA-cam, the previous episode clips I film the video is blocked. UA-cam IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF. COPYRIGHT CONTENT MY ASS. TOO MANY ADS.
SponsorBlock to auto-skip in-video ads Enhancer For UA-cam to add some extra options (like increasing playback speed by 0.1, up to 4x video speed) UA-cam Redux to bring back an older, more square style of YT. It's getting used to, but it's SOOOO GOOOOOD! Almost feels like the good old glory days, when people could still COMPLETELY customize their own channel (remember that? Good shit).

additionally on the UA-cam shorts part, if you do want to keep shorts but hate how distracting it is, there's also an addon where you can convert shorts into normal video format, that way you can keep the normal YT viewing experience

Didn't hear of unhook before, will check that out since YT eats way too many hours truth be told. That said another good one you missed is BlockTube, It allows you to disable shorts and hard block videos or channels based on title and description. It is great to be able to block channels that YT pushes like legacy media slop or clip channels of the n-th unfunny twitch streamer. Really recommend it.
Watch UA-cam crack down on these extensions (or try to) like they did with Adblock (Again try =/= succede) but instead of using their ressources to improve the website, they'd rather waste money on loosing a war against adblockers than try and improve their service. As for sponsor block the only reason I don't use it is because I watch a handful of channels who make their sponsored bits very entertaining it'd be a shame not to watch those.
I would just like to beg all SponsorBlock users who are going to submit things to remember 2 things: 1. Please read the guidelines for what each category means. A UA-camr talking about their new merch is not a Sponsor, it's Unpaid/Self-Promotion. So many people get this wrong. 2. Please read the guidelines again, notably to include the segue into and out of the sponsor or self-promotion. So many people get this wrong too, I watch so many videos where I hear "But first I gotta pay some bills" or "But before we do, let me tell you about today's sponsor" before the skip happens. The segue into and out of the ad is supposed to be included, the skip is supposed to be as though no sponsor segment was ever there in the first place.
Too harsh on YT shorts. It's an easier way for creators to lead their audiences on while preparing bigger content or filling in the gaps. Plus, wasn't the beloved Vine basically this? I also watch a lot of cool vehicle moments like a jet landing vertically, which I would not have found without Shorts.
2:27 yoooo sponsorblock. Literally a godsend. Thank god its built into revanced extended too. I have the return dislike, sponsorblock, and ublock on my pc too. Revanced on phones has so many tools to hide all the unwanted garbage but i wasnt sure how to do this on pc so thanks! There's a bunch of really short sponsorblock segments in this very video lmao. The only drawback of sponsorblock is the fact that it's all user submitted. Yeah it's the only way to reliably do this. But sometimes some asshole will absolutely grief the sponsorblock segments on a vid, it's not really that common thankfully but I ran into a linus tech tips vid where pretty much the whole thing was a rainbow of sponsorblock colors. I always try to do my part by marking legit sections and reporting the griefed ones.
What is REAlly getting on my nerves is the SLOWNESS of youtube - it was fine at one point then the stupid idiots change the algorithems. Videos take forever to load - Resolution keeps changing and I can't enjoy watching in the resolution that I want to LOCK on to - Buffering is another problem and I have to refresh the page or change the resolution its just real SHITTY. Now if you want to do a video on how to overide this and get youube back to the way it was then great ... Need I say more??!!!

Adblock Ultimate works even better, I have not seen even one ad, or ever had UA-cam tell me to turn of my ad blocker. I've been using sponsorblock ever since I first heard about it. I HATE it when creators interrupt the flow of the video to waffle on about how much they love Raid Shadow Legends or Skillshare or Nord VPN (or whatever the newest craze is). I don't know WHY they feel it so necessary to interrupt the flow of the video to talk about those things, just put it at the end or better yet make a separate video about it. I might install the thing that restores the dislikes, I don't know WHY they removed that. Also I'm gonna remove the short because UA-cam shorts are Cancer. Now if we could just restore comments on UA-cam Kids videos that would be perfect, so many times I've watched a video, then scrolled down to read the comments only to find that it's inexplicably a "UA-cam Kids" video, even though it was something kids would never be interested in.

Personally I don't really care much about DeArrow, because if a title doesn't tell me what the video is about, then I don't want to know. I just won't watch it, period. The thumbnails don't bother me. They actually help tell videos apart by who created them, or which series they're from, etc. The only situation where I might have some use for DeArrow, if I ever get back to this, is with dishonest cooking videos titled _"only 2 ingredients and 5 minutes",_ when they should actually be titled _"5 ingredients and two hours in the oven"._ There are so many of these dishonest videos it's disgusting. If you're looking for an actual quick recipe, like I was, good luck finding that needle in the hay stack of bad clickbait.
They can reduce add if they block 4k video upload behind a pay wall. Most people dont watch on a 4k screen. And many times 4k videos other look worse than a 1080p because of there awefull bitrate and lighting and over all production. UA-cam need to push add to affort more storage. Keep in mind the cost of a simple ssd cost... And inmagion buy the amount to able to store 4k data of millions of people. 90% of all uploaders dont need to upload in 4k because there over all video quality is not even good enough to make it worth being in 4k. Yes, youtubers add sponsors... Because they dont get much money from adds. The people they eurn the most from are people using prime. But yes, adds and sponsors are annoying... But what do people want? UA-cam Deleting videos to make free space? No?? Than you got choices to make. Buy prime, or take those adds to the face. The more people take away money from UA-cam, the worse it wil get. UA-cam over all is actually very chill so far with there adds... If you compair it with other platforms like twitch

In addition to that, I started seeing full screen ads for the NFL garbage UA-cam wanted to sell. Three within the span of 2 hours in the Android app. So now I have an "ad free" service that's about to increase in price and isn't ad free anymore? Heck no. I cancelled it. I split the money I was paying to UA-cam among creator's Patreon accounts instead.
Also, UA-cam would do well to unbundle things from Premium. I don't want and never used Music, I don't want and never watched Originals, I don't want and never used Downloads, etc. I just wanted ad free UA-cam. They should make a lower, ad-free only tier (and make sure it's ACTUALLY ad free) that costs less for people who don't care about all that excess garbage. They were starting to turn into Amazon Prime with all these "value adds" that I don't want and will never use and don't want to pay for.
We need more competitors to UA-cam lol. The fact that I need multiple extensions to make UA-cam better is criminal.

For Mobile: Don't use NewPipe when you have many options such as Revanced Extended and other forks. No ads, no shorts (can be toggled), dislikes visible, sponsorblock integrated, hundreds of customization options, etc.

For android your best option is UA-cam revanced. it used to be called just vanced before but they got sued or they were about to get sued and after a while it got removed. This is i think another team that started handling the project basically it gives these features without sacrificing of any of the features and visuals like newpipe or firefox. So you'll still just be using regular youtube:

Dearrow doesn't serve much purpose for me, because I usually just browse my subscription feed for the latest content (recommendations is just outright broken for me), and most of channels I subscribed to stayed within a reasonable approach to the thumbnail designs, I also use Unhook to redirect my UA-cam's home page directly to my subscription feed.

UA-cam shouldn't have thumbnail pictures! They may look nice, but they can also be deceiving. Better just to select from some still photos from the video as the thumbnail, that way people can see what's really in the video.
I hope more Chromium browsers will have the option to run ublock origin in manifest v2 mode, and not just Brave. Otherwise I'll switch 100% to Brave (fast & blocks ads properly with manifest v2)

I also suggest the "Enhancer for UA-cam" extension. It adds a lot of useful features, like converting shorts to normal videos, adding custom video speeds, hiding shorts, video pop-up while you scroll through the comments, add keyboard shortcuts to switch between video qualities and a lot more.
Also if the video thumbnail sizes are too large and you hate it, try reducing the zoom to 80-90%, the sizes do go back to decent.

A quick mention: unhook does also allow you to remove shorts, so the uBlock stuff isn't totally necessary. However, since that's just a toggle away, there's definitely a case to be made as far as setting up a more-annoying-to-undo blocklist!
Does Unhook remove shorts? I think it only hides the Shorts tab, but the recommendations on the home page remain.

Watching this video just made me realize in how many different ways UA-cam went downhill. I'll definitely use the one that makes titles more informative! It's funny, seeing the new titles actually made Linus' videos seem more interesting.
A great extension I can recommend is Video Speed Controller, it allows you to set a speed appropriate for the content and easily skip boring parts, sponsored segments and ads manually with the shortcuts (B & N). I don't think YT will ever crack down on that.

I am trying to limit the number of extensions in my browsers, for security reasons, but the one filtering out the sponsorships looks like a good one to have.
What I hate in thumbnails is: AI images, often exaggerated, and real faces with crazy expressions, like if we were bunch of toddlers here, that they have to go to these measures to get our attention. I told youtube not to offer me a few of those already. And those pointing fingers on certain wording in the thumbnails, like if they didn't show me where to look I wouldn't know?
I don't mind if your channel looks boring, I like it being real and down to Earth. Keep doing the great job.

There are also some Command Line Applications that just allow you to watch a specific video, however I'm not sure these have sponsor block, they don't have any ads or interface except the video player itself and the terminal😅

i actually made my own extension in this regard, also related to shorts, however, what it does, is when opening in a new tab it automatically opens in the normal youtube player, so one can still change playback speed, skip back in the video, etc. basically a normal video lol and most importantly does not invite to doomscrolling

Pretty much every video on UA-cam now is all about getting more views and money, usually by trying to find loopholes so they can violate copyright laws and not get suspended (leeching off of copyrighted content). I mostly just listen to songs by celebrities on here. Pretty much every user-generated video here is optimized to get as much revenue as possible. Watching people on UA-cam making videos with hard work and passion isn't a thing anymore.
When I don't ask for subscriptions or likes, I find that they go way down very quickly.
There's also Grayjay which aggregates videos by creators from multiple platforms.
That's basically the equivalent to Voldemort on youtube so I wouldn't blame him not mentioning it if he does know about it

The one thing UA-cam should push is preventing non-logged in users from using UA-cam. It will be very easy for them to implement. Visitors to UA-cam will just see a log in page. Those of us who log in will be unaffected by the change.

Yeah i have had yt setup like this for years. Personally i like clickbait because i use it to filter channels. Clickbait = never watch channel.
Same applies to sponsor block if someone has bad sponsors and content isnt good enough to ignore i dont watch any vids.
Also i removed shorts using ublock. Just adjust sliders and you can minimize loss of other ui. I lost part of the sub list (on side) which was useless anyway since got 1000 people i sub to.

As a result, your video has been blocked, and can no longer be played on UA-cam. This is not a copyright strike and does not affect your channel. Didn't hear of unhook before, will check that out since YT eats way too many hours truth be told.
That said another good one you missed is BlockTube, It allows you to disable shorts and hard block videos or channels based on title and description. It is great to be able to block channels that YT pushes like legacy media slop or clip channels of the n-th unfunny twitch streamer. Really recommend it.
Watch UA-cam crack down on these extensions (or try to) like they did with Adblock (Again try =/= succede) but instead of using their ressources to improve the website, they'd rather waste money on loosing a war against adblockers than try and improve their service.
As for sponsor block the only reason I don't use it is because I watch a handful of channels who make their sponsored bits very entertaining it'd be a shame not to watch those.
I would just like to beg all SponsorBlock users who are going to submit things to remember 2 things:
1. Please read the guidelines for what each category means. A UA-camr talking about their new merch is not a Sponsor, it's Unpaid/Self-Promotion. So many people get this wrong.
2. Please read the guidelines again, notably to include the segue into and out of the sponsor or self-promotion. So many people get this wrong too, I watch so many videos where I hear "But first I gotta pay some bills" or "But before we do, let me tell you about today's sponsor" before the skip happens. The segue into and out of the ad is supposed to be included, the skip is supposed to be as though no sponsor segment was ever there in the first place.
There is a version (a fork) for NewPipe That Has SponserBlock And Return Dislike Counter Called "Tubular" (NewPipe x SponserBlock formally)
Too harsh on YT shorts. It's an easier way for creators to lead their audiences on while preparing bigger content or filling in the gaps. Plus, wasn't the beloved Vine basically this? I also watch a lot of cool vehicle moments like a jet landing vertically, which I would not have found without Shorts.

There's a bunch of really short sponsorblock segments in this very video lmao. The only drawback of sponsorblock is the fact that it's all user submitted. Yeah it's the only way to reliably do this. But sometimes some asshole will absolutely grief the sponsorblock segments on a vid, it's not really that common thankfully but I ran into a linus tech tips vid where pretty much the whole thing was a rainbow of sponsorblock colors. I always try to do my part by marking legit sections and reporting the griefed ones.

What is REAlly getting on my nerves is the SLOWNESS of youtube - it was fine at one point then the stupid idiots change the algorithems. Videos take forever to load - Resolution keeps changing and I can't enjoy watching in the resolution that I want to LOCK on to - Buffering is another problem and I have to refresh the page or change the resolution its just real SHITTY. Now if you want to do a video on how to overide this and get youube back to the way it was then great ... Need I say more??!!!

Adblock Ultimate works even better, I have not seen even one ad, or ever had UA-cam tell me to turn of my ad blocker. I've been using sponsorblock ever since I first heard about it. I HATE it when creators interrupt the flow of the video to waffle on about how much they love Raid Shadow Legends or Skillshare or Nord VPN (or whatever the newest craze is). I don't know WHY they feel it so necessary to interrupt the flow of the video to talk about those things, just put it at the end or better yet make a separate video about it. I might install the thing that restores the dislikes, I don't know WHY they removed that. Also I'm gonna remove the short because UA-cam shorts are Cancer. Personally I don't really care much about DeArrow, because if a title doesn't tell me what the video is about, then I don't want to know. I just won't watch it, period. The thumbnails don't bother me. They actually help tell videos apart by who created them, or which series they're from, etc.
The only situation where I might have some use for DeArrow, if I ever get back to this, is with dishonest cooking videos titled _"only 2 ingredients and 5 minutes",_ when they should actually be titled _"5 ingredients and two hours in the oven"._ There are so many of these dishonest videos it's disgusting. If you're looking for an actual quick recipe, like I was, good luck finding that needle in the hay stack of bad clickbait.
