- The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an iconic American carrier-capable supersonic fighter aircraft. It could achieve speeds beyond the speed of sound. The wings could adjust their sweep angle for optimal performance during flight phases.
Still possibly the most beautiful fighter jet ever made.
Yeah! In the 70s-80s
Still!!!!!! Is the most beautiful 😍 jet ever built. Went head to head with the Eagle and won. Almost caused the Japanese to buy the Tom Cat instead of Eagles
I agree so much!!!

As Iranian I was 12 yrs old when Iraq attacked us and war ended when I was 20 yrs old. F14 saved thousands of lives as most of Iraqi migs canceled their mission while facing F14. I salute to all those engineers who designed and made this incredible machine. It is Lamborgini of aircrafts. My aunt's husband was airforce officer in Isfahan airbase which was F14 base. When I was a kid he took me to airfield to see F14 closely. I never firget this experience. It was my dream come true. As an 55 years old man I still feel the kid inside me.
It's a truck and much of the design was ripped of after they bailed on the F-111B program. Their partner General Dynamics took it right up the keester when they bailed.
i wish i could experience the same way you do..congrats man!
And today Iran are puppets of Putin Russia

In 1984. I remember my mother taking me and my brothers to Morgan Imports after church. "A toy a piece" she said, I chose the F14 Tom Cat. It was my favorite plan then, and still is to this day.
This aircraft did make a debut not only in the United States Navy, but also in Top Gun. It's speed and agility did make it famous, but Top Gun made the F-14 even more famous. Those are two top things that really made a benefit for the F-14 Tomcat. So, yeah. Well done. Keep up the good work.
Look up The Final Countdown (1980). That movie was the real movie debut of the F-14.
The F-14 Tomcat was not flown by the US Air Force.
@@user-pj3ch8ou2h It didn't? Funny that. It should fly for the Air Force too, unless another aircraft had that covered.
@@ronaldv_tm So, that's where the F-14 came in. Interesting.

Gotta love the Tomcat...
I'm a USAF F-15 man, but I damn sure love and respect the big Tomcat!
Same here I have worked on the F-15 most of my live but now retired and they still make the F-15 in 2024.

Man, I miss the F-14. Tomcat, the fighter jet is the best. Top Gun got me hook on the Tomcat, I hope some day the the Navy will bring it back into services
Me too
They were almost all destroyed to prevent Iran getting spare parts. Unbelievably tragic.
You are free to dream on…that part of life stays good, if you don’t develop a mental illness or live with permanent pain…😮
Why would anyone that has exponentially better technology (with at least 4 production fighter jets) ever want to take not just a step, but leaps & bounds back in time and fly an outgunned, slower, less agile and way easier to hit with weapons jet when they have multiple options that far outclass the Tomcat? It's a beautiful plane and in its time it was second to none. But that time is way past and she's now in her rightful place: history.
It’s not the best or we’d still have them. The F18 is way better both in looks and in performance and capability.
That F-14 Tomcat is One Totally Super Badass Fighter Jet!
Definitely one of the better products of the US military aerospace industry.
The F-15, was the first plane that could gain velocity, in a straight up climb, because of it's engines and aerodynamics.

Navy pilots loved flying the F 14. They were extremely disappointed when the Navy ended the F 13 program.
I had a dream of Maverick flying the F14 in what *seemed* to be a *manic* way but with *total* control and absolutely *maximum* concentration, using the swept wings asymmetrically to outmanoeuvre modern fighters and then landing the plane on an aircraft carrier after flying below the level of the deck and above the ocean until the very end. I think the gist of the dream was that obviously technology matters but it’s the pilot’s *personal knowledge* of the aircraft that matters more than anything else.
Um, № 1, it's kinda weird that you're dreaming of movies, and № 2, that was the end sequence to Maverick, not a dream.
@@Robbie1075that’s his point.
My cousin was one of the test pilots for the Tomcat. He was also an instructor for the Iranian Air Force up until the Shaw was deposed.
They don't make them beautiful like this anymore. Now everything looks like the F-35
U mean everything look like the f-22 since it was developed before the f-35
Had that F14 Tomcat plane toy as a child, with the open-closing wings. That was really beautiful.
Naval version of the F-15 Eagle. At least that's what it looked like - the resemblance is uncanny.
Best design ever🤩 F14 Tomcat and P51 Mustang are my favourites.
P-51 is a true work of art. It is the most beautiful fighter ever, not the F-14.
I don’t even thing the F-14 is even good looking. It always looked big and clunky to me. It’s a huge plane.
F14 tomcat
The sixiest airplane ever😊
Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Why we are not still using this beauty and still using other aircraft from the same era is mind-blowing to me. When the F 14 was active us lay people or public never even knew what a F 15 or F 18 was and they were around at that time as well!! The thoughts of an upgraded block of F 14 s with the upgrades the 15,16 and 18s got would be terrifying!!!
Even the best F-14D can't compete with newer F-15s,16s, and 18E/Fs. The F-14 was an aging platform by the mid 90s, which is why Grumman proposed the ST21 and other upgrades
Thar. And cost. Like the B1. The 14s swing wings made them EXTREMELY maintenance heavy. Which increased costs and decreased combat readiness for any period of time
@@hurricaneace143 Not just the swing wing, the entire F-14 had maintenance issues
@@TaGF_Tomcat That's just not the case.
None of those fighters could beat the F-14 in it's role as a fleet defense interceptor. Comparing modern variants is truly apples to oranges, as the F-14 would have continued to receive the same sort of updates. Comparing it to F-15's and F-16's is equally absurd as those are not carrier capable aircraft.
The F-14's were never replaced on carriers, their role was eliminated after the collapse of the soviet union.
The old F-14D's are still better than the latest and greatest F-18's in the interceptor role.
@@Anubis78250 Dude, my name is literally "Totally a Grumman F-14 Tomcat", you can trust that I've done my research.
As much as I love the F-14 it did need to be retired, and is not the same as other 4th gens in regards to it's ability to be modernized and sustained.
The most beautiful fighter jet ever, as far as I know.
Always loved the 14 and 15 s the 16s too but the 15 and 22 are my absolute favorite
A fighter jet for ever ! Tomcat 14 F
Iranian Air Force
You can thank the Shah of Iran for its existence. The fly off between the F111 was chosen by the Air Force as a swing wing precision bomber. The Navy didn't have the funding and it sat on the shelf until the Shah pledged $500 million to complete testing as long as he was assured he could purchase it. He did the same thing with the Bell 214A, a very souped up huey that was especially for the hot desert climate.
Got in to this badass bird via Swat Kats. Absolutely LOVE the beauty of the air frame, along with its top notch superiority during its time. If only we could have a next gen version. Alas, variable wing geometry is too much of a maintainence upkeep.
Tomcat Tweaker here. Love that jet.
Should of never been retired awesome fighter saw them at Sigenella NAB Sicily
I love the F-14, but it was old and needed to be retired. The replacement choice on the other hand, is more up for debate
@@TaGF_Tomcat Read somewhere there was a Super Tomcat, but politics got in the way.
@@flybobbie1449 That’s a bit of a long story, but with the Cold War winding down and congress not being super happy with Grumman (and a sprinkling of political corruption) the Super Hornet was selected over the Super Tomcat.
The decision was made partially for cost reasons, which is somewhat ironic given that the Super Hornet cost far more than initially expected.
Just to be clear, both the Super Tomcat and the Super Hornet are basically new aircraft made to look like the old aircraft.
I agree, we should have gotten Super Tomcats. The "hornet mafia" made sure that wouldn't happen.
Maintenance was becoming a problem and since ships had advancements in dealing with threats, the cat just couldn’t stay in service. It sucks but it is what it is

Iran doesn't hate America, they hate your government's interference into their country's affairs. Last time I checked, America hates when others interfere in our domestic affairs.
you're using my words .
in their defense they love america but hate that america isnt part of their country/religion as a dogmatic full force. they would throw out america banners all day if america officially embraced their version of Islam for every citizen.
Cuz without those American fighters they have third gen sukhois
Kind of crazy that old bird is still in service. I'd be worried about the wing joints no longer work 😂
Wow a supersonic aircraft that can fly faster than sound. Who would have thought? And it VARIOUS weather conditions?? Oh my! Other than dumb writing, the F-14 is probably my favorite fighter.
The one plane the enemy's fear most is the A-10 warthog because it's the only one that does close combat support.
My brother flew the tomcat he even went to top gun not bad for a country boy from Oakridge NC i got to see them up close where they practice touch & go landing's a painted runway a boot with a light where it can be moved to mimic a pitching deck real close real neet 😮
Iran has reverse engineered the F14 and are making spare parts on their own for years. They’ve modified it also to use non US made weapons.
I always associated F14 with Thunderkat of the SwatKats cartoon. Hence it'll always be a legendary aircraft for me with it's adjustable wings
We have year long memberships at our local Air Museum ( that was recently devastated by a tornado) my kids get a choice of airplane every time they go. They have chosen the F-14, F-18 and the F-22. I’ve had to replace the F-14 due to frequency of use.
Dewfinitely one of my favorites, there are far too many cool US designed aircraft to list. Even the F4 Phanthoms it replaced were cool.
Love the kitty cat
F-14 Tomcat is my favourite fighter jet thanks to Maverick
My favourite jet fighter.
F14 and the warthog are my favorites
I think the airframe was ingenious and with advance in avionics and propulsion it could have been around for much longer but the swing wing was difficult to manufacture. Another reason the F-111 was phased out as well. Both could haul as and carry lots of weight.
We know this f14 tomcat frm topgun tom cruise
Such a wonderful jet. It was a sweet jet in he movie Top Gun. My question is, why did the Navy retire it?
My favorite jet
For its time impressive even if expensive to maintain and run but f18 got the edge over it as its costs way lower, way longer durablity f18 like 8hrs against 2 or 3 with F14. So it was a no brainer for navy
Yeah anyone ever wonder where Iran gets it's trickle of spare parts from????????
Hmmmmmmmmmm well there's I guess 2 sources from the USN or direct from Grumman.
Since the spare parts would be embargoed that means the goobs are involved in getting the parts to Iran.
Maverick approves this message.
If I recall correctly, Grumman wanted to use the tomcat moniker in WW2, but the name was seen as too risqué for the time.
C'mon Mav let's see some of that pilot shit
what versatility speed and weapons system... she could light up the sky , lock on to multiple targets and for her size she can mix it up like a aircraft considerably, smaller, i have a feeling if they would have made the updated version and solved the intakes and making much it much less likely to lose a flame and go into a flatspin making her maneuvering even more lethal and less likely to lose abort a aircraft
Top gun 💯
Still a beast
The navy was so determined to kill this bird. Grumman rolled out a super cat, fully upgraded.
Navy said no and killed the program.
I worked the last of them, the 'Bomb Cats', during the Bosnia campaign. They were killing it in air to ground operations.
Much better than the F35 at a fraction of the price
For some reason, I just can't count the ones in Iran as F-14s. I know they are, I know Iran got them when we were on friendly terms with them. But knowing who is flying them now puts a big shadow on the greatest and most beautiful plane we've ever put into the sky's. R.I.P. to the F-14.
I remember when the F-14's shot down zeros in the movie The Final countdown.
The USA did not want Iran to get spare parts from the F14's we were mothballing, so the powers.that be scuttled the F-14 and even if a military branch wanted parts for the 14 they are aren't available. The F-14 was dangerous to the pilot in that if an engine went out on take-off from a carrier the plane would roll and was difficult to recover. Our ship served takeoff operations and our job was to recover pilots. I do not have any idea how often this happened, but this was the chatter as to why they were moving away from swept wing and having two engines in that configuration. I understand the F-18 is safer and can be repaired more easily. I'm sure others have knowledge about this transition to F-18's in the early 90's.
I love the Tomcat because of zero to mach two faster than the pilot would want to handle the G forces. My friend got to ride and he passed out and vomited. He loved it!
Thx
Why some ❤️ that much?..her design has a soul 👻

It’s almost a half century old! Next week someone will dig one up in an archaeological site!
Im sure the Russians were watching "Top Gun" in 1987(?) and were like "Ivan!....Ivan come here! Look at these big, clumsy planes that are slower and less maneuverable than our MIGs the the Maverick and Iceman are flying!! Oh, niet!"
What generation fighter is the F-14 considered?

If we're going on looks alone the chinese j20 is absolutely gorgeous if we're going on looks and preformence then it would have to be the f22 though the f14 is a beautiful plane

Have a Tomcat scale model in metal and hard plastic.. it was a Renaissance plane for the U.S Navy but now has been retired. Nevertheless, it's presence enabled the U.S. to establish itself with advanced technology to further generations of new fighters we have now. The Tomcat will definitely have a spot in the history of military aircraft of the U.S.
The Iranians have good taste

I thought it's gonna refer to the F-22 instead of F-14, especially during the former's confrontation with Iranian F-4s where the Raptor pilot stalked them and told them to go home.
Recently, circumstances arose that may have changed the aircraft to spare parts ratio.
You mean we sold Iran F14 tomcats!?.
The Shah was in charge . He wanted fighters. There was a fly-off with the F-15. Tomcats look super cool wings swept, banked for the assembled masses, Tomcat wins!! Grumman engineers smuggled out some key parts. One of the reasons the Tomcats were shredded 😥
I never thought I would be jealous of Iran over anything... 😮😊😂

You know, if I was in charge or if another country was in charge and had the capability to build these planes. You know, I don't think they would sell him.The fucking competition or the enemy more that
As a muslim country & bordering state, why Iran & Iraq need to go for war? Iraq was back by American while Iran is on their own with minimal Russian support. The war only make both of them poorer, infrastructure destruction & thousand of death
Iran started manufacturing spare parts for the F-14s they have. Also, a few countries trading with Iran helped in parts acquiring, too.
If she isn't leaking hydraulic fluid then she's empty
Can anyone explain me why in this last top gun movie with Tom Cruise the strike team didn't use the most modern airplanes available to US air forces and kept repeating that line ...we can't get against 5th generation enemy plains"????
See the movie, litterally, first 30 minutes you already received the answer, watsonian at least
Doylish? The F35 is a one seat plane and is not possible to make the same trick as with a double seat, that without counting the price of operation being less justifiable and the plane being kind of difficult in a lot of areas

Highway to the danger zone
Not the best review as it fails to cover some of the most important features: the ones that make F-14 such a great pair for F-16, for example.
How did the iranians get a hold of American hardware? Was the previous regime friendly to the Americans?
The U.S. and Iran were extremely close allies until the Shah of Iran was deposed in 1979. When the Shah was in power, the U.S. saw them as a stabilizing force in the Middle East, but also as a threat to fall prey to the influence of the Soviet Union as had happened with Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. Therefore the U.S. permitted them to purchase many modern sophisticated weapons systems so that they would not develop close ties to the Soviet Bloc in order to procure their arsenal.
Yes, and the U.S. sold them to Iran freely (much like we do today with other military equipment and foreign countries).
Then Iran went absolutly crazy and had their revolution that ousted the Shah, whose regime was friendly with the U.S. The new islamic fundamentalist regime hates the West, especially the U.S. and Israel. The F-14 was so much of a threat that the U.S. destroyed their retired planes so that Iran couldn't get replacement parts. I like to think this is the exact reason why the U.S. won't sell the F-22 to anyone - you got to keep some things to yourself.
