Hey y`all, here's a drumworkout.com blog on the subject of ensemble techniques for all of you marching band & drumcorps folks. It's a fantastically mis-understood can of worms and hopefully my little video here will help to lift the cloak of mystery off of it.
sadly some band directors dont get it
This is a gem, they should make this video a requirement for directors!
I just watched latest emcproductions video (i used to suck at drumming) and then this video just showed up on my recommendation

Thank you for explaining this. So many band directors have no idea how this works.
The world has needed this for a long time.
We watch this every year. It’s one of the staples of our program.
Up to 10 dislikes now. Almost guaranteed 9 of them are band directors that were clarinet players when they were music majors. The other one is Ken Mazur.
As a person who plays clarinet this video is still 100% correct.
Thats not really correct for me I've done marching for 2-3 years and for me it comes easy now I know everything about it everything comes nearly easy all I gotta do is practice and it comes easy for me.
7:04 damn he really had to call me out
This is the reason I put the MET in the back field on the 50... Seems to work great.
YEAH GO MR FOREST
+Kurwin Forest It's more effective to have someone carry it behind the battery. That way the students get the idea of "oh, the battery's behind me right here and I should listen back." If it's always back on the 50, students will get into the habit of listening back in that direction, but if there's no battery there (as drill moves around) it'll turn messy.
@@pasta_healsnice idea
As always, incredibly logical explanation of complex theories! bravo!
Excellent demonstration and explanation! I was in marching band way back in jr. high school. I never even considered that the time delay might be an issue. But until this video, that is. Thanks for the enlightenment!
Match grip across the line means you teach 1 technique, 1 type of rotation across the entire battery. Its much easier to teach concepts this way as opposed to relying on traditional.
Also possibly the best video to show to directors regarding the travel of sound. I show this to everyone.
Lol nothing against match grip as I am a former Tenor player, but God I hate watching snare drummers use match...
Where I come from snare drummers love using traditional.
Match grip just looks, weak.
@@youtubecommenter2527 Exactly, it's too easy...
@@RobotRebelCinema Don't know how I ended up here at drumline videos. UA-cam algorithm shenanigans. Haven't participated in one in over 10 years.
I doesn’t matter what style you use as long as it is clean. The judges couldn’t give a shit about match or tradish. Match in the high school scenario is great for transitions of marching instruments as well as going back into the concert band season after marching band.
Great presentation. Thanks Bill!
Bill Bachman = Epic Awesomeness!
Thank you Mr. Bachman!!
Here from EMCproduction.
I remember this analogy from Mr. Bingaman! Awesome stuff ( and Marcus HS is always great (: )
thank you youtube recommended section, finally something beneficial to me lol
8 years old, but still as valid as ever!
Yes yes and yes. Great video.

Hi guyssssss
i’ll make sure they don’t forget the tennis balls
16:24 😂😂😂😂
yes before I was born lol
Can someone explain why this has 6 dislikes?
they don't want to hear the truth
They came from directors who think everybody watches the drum major
Wowie wow-- what's up with band directors and tight shirts??? (No offense)
why do they use matched?
+that guy you know there's nothing wrong with the match grip, i honestly don't see why people bag on it so much for snares :/
+edward moreno I wasn't saying anything against it my school does it too it's just not as common
+that guy you know I know, I'm just saying in general, I hate how people hate on match grip snares, sorry if i came off as blaming you lol
+edward moreno it's ok man no harm no foul
Bit of a late reply, but the reason they used matched grip is because snare drums lay flat, now. Snare drums used to REQUIRE traditional grip, because (traditionally), snares were on a sling which caused the snares to rest sideways. So it'd be impossible to play without traditional grip. Thanks to harnesses, now it lays flat. So you don't HAVE to play traditional.
