Parallel Walks With a Reactive Dog

  • Parallel walks are a great late-stage exercise for reactive dogs who have grown more experienced and desensitized to seeing other dogs close by. Once your dog can stay under threshold in the vicinity of other dogs, a parallel walk with a calm helper dog may be a great activity to try!
Parallel walks are also a great technique for introducing any two dogs to one another. Direct, head-on meet and greets are really stressful for dogs, and many dogs so much better meeting new friends through parallel walks.
For a reactive dog, you'll want to start out at a distance (potentially even across the street depending on how reactive your dog is). Reward your dog for calmly looking at the helper dog, as well as for checking in with you. Slowly close in the distance between the dogs, so long as neither dog is displaying concerning body language.
Have you ever done a parallel walk with another dog? Let us know in the comments!

This is so helpful! My girl even looks like Remy! She's not aggressive, just has ridiculously overexcited boxer paws and even the calmest of dogs don't want that in their face.

@@K9ofMine Ok, I will definitely let you know! My dog is definitely more reactive with bigger fluffier dogs, so I am going to try to get my friend's foster dog (hes a Great Pyrenees) to do it with us. We have been doing a lot of engage/disengage with her and it has been going amazing, so Im really excited to see how this goes!

@@K9ofMine So I just did the walk with her yesterday, and she did SO well! She stayed extremely focused on me and didn't even bark, growl, or lunge! Thank you so so much! 😁

This is a great video. Do you have one of when another dog is coming towards you expectantly?

Thank you! Can you do a video on how to use a fake dog if you can't use a stooge/calm dog.

Hey Kimberly - we can definitely consider doing some counter conditioning work with a stuffed dog, but it wouldn’t be possible for parallel walks since the stuffed dog can’t move. Neat idea!

This is great, your pitty looks just like my Ava, but my girl is more intense. So hard to find others to work this with. I think my girl really wants to interact with other dogs, but she just gets too excited and may be too much for other dog. Ava had a pitt friend Jake, she would chase, growl loudly, hump, try to hug him.... he never minded and there was never biting, when overexcited, I would step in and pull her back to calm...... I really think she was infatuated with him..... they understand each other sometimes when we don't. How about starting up a ...... PARALLEL WALK GROUP ?

I also sometime feel that Remy wants to be friends and play with other dogs, he just has ZERO social skills and has no clue how to interact. There are some dog play groups in my area that are run by a canine behavior institute and where they evaluate the dog first and try to match play styles. I might try doing something like that with Remy... we'll see! As far as parallel walk groups, I bet Nextdoor would be a great place to look for parallel walk friends locally.
