I am a member. Can you give any tips on training strong, hard working bred GSD. I use punishment, with all my dogs [A great many in the 50+ years I've constantly had a dog or 3]. at the level appropriate to the individual. But I'm struggling to be hard enough for THIS dog. I cannot convince her NOT to kill cats. She hasn't caught one yet, but "loses it" even if there might be one around!! NO trainers here. Scottish island.

I am also happy that Tom said "Everyone tries everything until they've done it right". A lot people have that attitude when it comes to working with their dogs, and it doesn't only to apply dog trainer. What a brilliant trainer!!

I've heard so many people say you're a bad dog owner if you don't let your dog sniff everything on walks! Thank you for debunking that! Sometimes I just want to exercise my dog and myself!

    • @beasport505
      @beasport505 2 місяці тому +2

Sniffing is a big part of a dogs behavior. It's their super power detecting the environment etc. You can train the dog to walk with you and then allow them on command "go sniff". It's still important to allow your dog to SNIFF

Just want to say thank you for being an advocate for the prong and E-collar! I have literally had clients break down into tears after using a prong and realizing that they can have a great relationship with their dog without getting dragged down the road, getting an arm broken when they get pulled down ect... They are amazing tools when used correctly and can save and change lives! So thank you for being such a great advocate for the usage of tools that work! Love watching your videos, you have helped me improve some of my own techniques and picking out body language as a trainer too, keep up the awesome work!

I was uneducated about prongs when I got my first pitbull. My trainer highly recommended one but I was still skeptical. I did my own research and decided it was a good tool when used correctly and decided to give it a try. My dog is a completely different dog when she has it on during our walks. It’s amazing.

    • @un-lady-like

@@KO-zi2xf absolutely! I have had so many clients over the years come in to a class being literally towed behind their dog. I have had quite a few clients come in after having an arm or hip broken because they were pulled down while trying to walk their dog... people offten come to me when they are at a point of being ready to give their dog up because they can't even walk them. So many have been made to feel bad for using a prong or have been fed so much incorrect info about the tool that they are super apprehensive about using it. Then they do and it is absolutely life changing! I'm so tired of seeing people judged and ridiculed for using a tool that has given them a whole new and amazing relationship with their dog. That is one of the reasons I love seeing the positive ways that Tom is showing just how great and effective proper tool usage is. People need to stop shaming dog owners for using the prong and e-collar.

As I'm sure many people in the comments section have said, I thank you for showing us how to correctly use an ecollar, as it is a total game changer when used at the right moments and levels. In my journey training my fear reactive 9 month old cattle dog, I've found my voice, the ecollar, and a lot of good treats to be a complete game changer in taking a dog who spent many months barking at any new person or dog, desperately trying to get them to go away, and helping her become happy and confident enough to be touched by new people or sniffed at by other dogs.

I think your channel is one of fews that actually use the words 'accountability', which is SO IMPORTANT. And not even humans are aware of it.
Just because you know something, doesn't mean you will always do it reliably. And being accountable for your failures and keep yourself on track is so definitely the main point in any training.

I rescued my Great Pyr mix at around 9mo old and was completely clueless to anything regarding fear aggression, resource guarding, proper leash walking, etc. I keep up with your tik tok and UA-cam but definitely get the most relatable info from the consultations you do on the podcasts (plus they’re easy to listen to on the way to work.) Thank you for consistently providing K9 perspective, endless outlets to reach more owners, and education on what are considered by some as “controversial training methods”. Thanks Tom for the clarification between the top ring and dead ring on the prong collars. I got my 75lb husky/shepherd cross a Herm Sprenger prong collar a couple months back. As a small woman, I was having troubles controlling him when he would get excited on walks. He would always want to greet other people and dogs which is not always appropriate depending on the situation. My trainer told me to clip the leash to both rings, since my dog isn't aggressive. However, I've noticed that he often doesn't respond to corrections on the leash and now I know why. Thank you for this great educational video. I always learn so much.

Every time I cross with someone that is skeptical about these tools or criticizes me for wearing them, besides trying to explain I tell them they should check your chanel to be better informed about how they can be so life changing for dogs and their families! And it's so true what you said about everyone has tried everything until they do it the right way, most people don't know how to properly use the tools or have good foundations for the tools to make that much of a difference. Thanks for advocating for dogs no matter what :)

It took me only 2 days to get my to do thing that’s she’s never done before. I’m so glad I found Davis he has helped me build a better bond with my dog. She has trouble off leash though. I’m hoping that I win the E-collar because she always runs off into a street and I’m afraid that she’s going to get hit by a car. If she does my parents don’t have the money to pay for any surgery but with the E-collar I have a opportunity to reduce the chances of her getting hit.

I am a strong advocate for force free training and have seen many people progress with their fearful and reactive dogs from it, but even small "corrective" actions we've taken with my severely reactive dog have shown so much improvement. We are working with a trainer now, who had us start walking him on a martingale instead of a harness and he has already shown improvement. I am pretty sure she is going to move us to a prong soon, which I would've been totally against before but it is hard to argue with the results we are starting to see.

About a year ago when my bro decided to get a sport/activity dog, that has very high level of energy, I was quite sceptical of our knowledge and skill about dogs, and he was only watching what this breed is capable of. I was kinda afraid that we aren't able to give the dog what it needs to be wealthy. So I stumbled on this channel. And a year later now we both learned leadership and how to act with a animal. I've learned sooo much, that I have the feeling that we took the dog from a trainer. I'm amazed and thankful for what you guys are doing, so keep improving cuz its totally worth the time and effort!

My dog is so very nervous and fearful, but it's totally random and getting more frequent. For over a year I've been trying to find the triggers but I haven't found a single consistency. Her basic obedience is pretty solid, but when she gets fearful she shuts down to the point where I don't think she even registers my voice or leash pressure. I adopted her as an adult and she wasn't socialized well or trained well with her previous family. She's extremely reactive after being attacked several times (she used to love other dogs). I have an appointment with a vet behaviorist tomorrow to try and help her. It breaks my heart to see her so scared when I can't figure out why. I hope we can figure something out for her.

Your videos helped me make the choice to use a prong collar and an e collar on my reactive Weimaraner.
You completely showed me the “bad stigma” is incorrect about these tools! They are humane and safe for our dogs.
These tools have completely changed our relationship as Jade now understands what I am trying to communicate. The e collar has also given Jade and I so much freedom.
We hike off leash (she is not dog aggressive). And I know that I will be able to get her back if she gets a scent and bolts. The e collar is our seatbelt!! Her recall is impeccable now we use the e collar. She knows I can touch her from afar. You should see how happy she gets when her tools come out. She knows it’s adventure time!
I rescue Weimaraner’s so I have 3. My goal is to get my other two on e collars so we can all communicate and hike off leash together. ❤️

I have been training and handling dogs since I was in 5th grade and my mentor had a similar ideology to you with dog obedience! Using both positive reinforcement and positive punishment has allowed me to not only successful competing in dog shows but also establishing the best bond/relationships with my dogs!
I have to say that it is refreshing to see that there are still trainers that utilize both positive reinforcement and positive punishment for obedience training. Nowadays the concept of fear free has overthrown the use of positive punishment with training and that is not realistic!!!
As I head off to vet school this summer. I hope I will be also to use my experiences with dog obedience to assist clients once I am a veterinarian. Unfortunately dog behavior is not really taught in vet school and many pet owners who have behavioral concerns/questions tend to consult their vets first for assistance. I hope to be a vet that can provide both great medical service as well as realistic and useful behavioral service too :)

I think I watched a video of yours from like over 4 years ago and thought you were a bit of a tool in that video, then saw this as the next video. You’re so much nicer here and it shows. Glad to see the training get more positive and nicer with dogs

This video was soo helpful for me! Our dog has had very very little social time because of Covid. We hot him in February of 2020. He is sooo afraid of loud things outside and retreats home immediately! I really pray this will help us.

That sad face broke my heart 💔! Tom's training gave this sad girl a chance for a HAPPY life 😊, and an ADVENTURE-FILLED one, too. For the owner, too!
It's like he unlocked 🗝 the door, and let them out of jail 🕊.

Love your videos! They have helped so much. I foster dogs and they come with unknown pasts, sometimes have reactivity, separation anxiety, have never walked on a leash before and often resource guarding. Your videos have given me so many tools and have educated me so much. I feel like I am better equipped to set them up for success so that they can be adopted and have success in their new homes.

I enjoy all of these videos. Tom is never rude to owners. Even if they just don’t get it. He’s firm when necessary, but not condescending. He teaches…teaches… 💜

The way you explain the use of equipment and the actual truth behind it is amazing I wish more people would be able to understand it in the way you advocate about it! Love your videos and keep it up ☺️👍 love from Alberta Canada from me and my pup Riggs 🐶

Thank you for the videos that you continue to put out there. I like that you take no stabs at other training methods and adjust to each dog based on the owner/dog relationship you observe. You understand that tools only help and a heavy reliance on it can be detrimental. The majority of us can learn from this especially those desperately looking for a “magic” tool for a behavior adjustment. Guided relationship building with the right amount of using the tools are the takeaways from your videos.

It's so hard not to coddle and protect ur doggo when they seem fearful, but all its doing is reinforcing that they should be afraid. This was such a great education on how to work with a nervous dog
My own dog doesn't do chill walks. We do either stop and sniffs or exercise walks lol we have to take stop and sniff breaks. I have to remember that dogs need breaks!

Been tuning in and lurking for a while and just wanted to say I’m a big fan! This video is EXACTLY tailored to my nervous anxious pup’s needs. She’s my first experience with having a dog and I’ve definitely struggled a lot. I’m so thankful to the wealth of knowledge and resources about tools that you provide, although I haven’t had a chance to try everything I want I feel more comfortable knowing about them so I can try them in the future!
