In my opinion, ohtani is the mvp and it isn’t even close. As for the greatest mvp race ever, I think it was Sosa and McGwire in 98 when both guys broke maris’ home run record.
I honestly think there's not much of an "MVP race" right now. Ohtani wins, Vlad Jr. gets a respectable second place - I don't see it as being at all close. If you were just looking at batting, Vlad would take it by a respectable margin, but Ohtani's pitched over 100 innings with a 3.00 ERA - that's considerable.
I think the point I was trying to get at here is that the race isn't great because of how close it is, but how historic it is. Vlad could legitimately win the AL triple crown this year and still not win MVP, that's what makes this so insane to watch
If you think 2021 MVP race was good, just wait until 2022. Hahaha. I've enjoyed binging some of your catalogue of videos - enjoy the length, style and topics and you clearly are passionate about growing the game. I, too, talked about Vlad's season reverently in 2021. To be honest though, we all exaggerated it some. Way too many (myself included) kept saying that it would take a season like Ohtani to prevent Vlad from winning the MVP. Even if you just look at hitting (because I know there is a defensive adjustment in WAR that will always favor elite SS and CF), his season would rarely win the MVP in any other year in the last 2 decades. Vlad had a 167 OPS+ and 166 wRC+. Among qualified hitters in the AL, there were 3 better in 2000, 1/2 in 2001, 3 in 2002, none in 2003, none in 2004, 1/2 in 2005, 1 in 2006, 3/4 in 2007, none in 2008, 1 in 2009, 2/3 in 2010, 2 in 2011, 1/2 tied with him in 2012, 3 in 2013, 1/3 in 2014, 1/2 in 2015, 1 in 2016, 2 in 2017, 3 in 2018, 1/2 in 2019, 2020 awards don't count, and 2 in 2022. Overall, if MVP was decided by bat alone instead of total value (where he would've been even less competitive), he could feasibly have won in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2008, with maybe a few others he'd have a shot. All that is discounting the pitchers that won or were challengers in some of those years too, plus the overall value of players that played more important positions. 4 in 21 seasons is not nearly as deserved of hype compared to the praise we lavished on the season. What he did in 2021 was really impressive, but I do think we all overhyped it a bit at the time, especially given what we went on to see from Judge next year - a season that deservedly overthrew Ohtani's MVP stranglehold.
Fair point, but I think the biggest thing to look at in September is if he will stick the landing. A few bad outings and a slump to end his season could still cost him the trophy if Vlad continues to dominate. If Shohei is able to end the season as the home run leader it will be hard to vote against him.
@@fated316 Look man, we all know Shohei is the favorite, and I literally said he was my pick to win. But last I checked, there's still a month of season left and the mvp voters haven't actually cast a ballot yet. Let's just enjoy watching them for the next few weeks lol
Not really, he's obviously hitting a lot of home runs but he's still 28th in fWAR in the American League this season. I love Salvy as much as the next guy, but he is nowhere near MVP level.
If you prefer Buehler to win, I understand, but if you can't recognize that Burnes has been the clear frontrunner all season and has by far the best rate stats in MLB (he currently has the second-best FIP ever recorded in the modern era behind Pedro in 1999), then it is you that needs to wake up. Burnes has produced nearly 2 more wins worth of value than Buehler in 30 fewer innings according to FanGraphs, and Wheeler nearly 1.5 more wins.
@@TheDiamondBaseball FIP is not going to win you the Cy Young. ERA & wins will determine the winner and Burnes is so so. Want to make a bet ??? you name it, there is a zero chance your boy ends up higher in the voting .... just because you have a youtube channel doesn't mean you actually know anything LOL
how is this even a close race @ all...if vlady had more homers than shohei...& ohtani had an ERA of 10 with zero strikeouts on the mound...then i would consider a race
Your take on this race being even close is controversial. Shohei otani is by far the MVP without playing another game. For this to even be close, Vladimir would have to be hitting 390 to 400, or have 65 home runs with 160 rbi. If Vlad goes off for those kinds of numbers, I will say that it's close. But don't forget that otani has a chance to win 11 or 12 games as a pitcher too.
Yeah, this is fair. But the point I was getting at here is that the race is phenomenal not necessarily for how close it is, but for how historic it is, with Vlad Jr. putting up a possible triple crown season and Shohei, well, being Shohei lol
Not even close consideration both teams are 4th place.... please put down the crack pipe before the next video 2 4th place teams don't make this a the best race lol its actually a very boring race again please put down the pipe...

Who do you think is going to win the AL MVP this year? What do you think was the best MVP race of all time? Let us know in the comments down below!
This is the best mvp race ever and I think it comes down to whoever hits more homers
Ohtani is a lock
Ohtani deserve it. Cuz he is doing something that hasn’t been done about a 100 years.

Both guys on the 4th place teams definitely not great or important lol neither guy can help their team
@@nick0tripp312 Vlad slighty more helpful though

So, so good

They are both good player but for me i think Ohtani is MVP of the year 🎉because he has a lot of talent not only home runs but everything 👍✨
Vladdy doesn’t pitch. How could this even be close? Ohtani is like the modern Babe Ruth.
Idk about best, but this will certainly be one of the more memorable races in recent years
I think we can all agree on that
Miggy/Trout race was the best
Arguably the race that made WAR as popular of a stat as it is today
