Man I get this guy is a real life musical genius but nothing he has ever put out has done it for me, and that comes from a place of utmost respect for what he’s capable of.
that was absolutely craaaaaaazy guitar skills. I mean did you guys see him strumming on his 5 string guitar... Man I have never seen one strum an acoustic guitar... that was craaaazy. Man, this is the next guitar virtuoso right here. Crazy stuff.
See if he didn't do all of these harmonies and interactions at concerts and all this unnecessary music theory and perfect pitch, everything's he's famous for, and truly tried writing music and songs rather than flexing his technical abilities instead, I'd actually enjoy his music. This is perfect, really well played between the voice the playing, as well clearly being able to make my own to it as well without it sounding just like a practice piece. These 40 seconds are gold
he is mostly known for jazz, so all the "unnecessary music theory" come in handy at that. you don't specifically dislike his music, you just might dislike his take on jazz.
@@exc9497 i don't think he's arguing on whether jacobs applicatiom of theory is useful but more that he finds his talk of theory and flashy tricks to be unnecessary and bragadocious. My take is all of that extra stuff he does adds a positive impact to the performance, creating excitement.
He does a lot of jazz stuff and all those harmonies you dislike is part of his approach to jazz. It's kinda displaying the reason why he's famous. This video shows some good skills but nothing out of the ordinary. But if you are into harmonically complex genres it's understandable that you might not like it. What he plays in the video is closer to popular music
Yeah dude tell him how to write, I'm sure you have a lot of experience. Hate when people just can't say they don't like his style instead of trying to justify themselves. You don't like it, you don't understand it, that's okay. I don't like free jazz but I don't go around saying: well only if Albert Ayler started playing some proper jazz instead of flexing his experimentation and all that tonal stuff maybe i'd enjoy his music.
I believe musicianship isn't about what's difficult, it's about what's right. Are there guitarists who can play more difficult stuff? For sure. But when Collier plays, it's right.
He's a musical genius, but I always feel like his singing is 3 ranks weaker in comparison to his instrumental skills. If he had the voice and the range of Ed Sheeran or Bruno Mars, that'd be insane...
It’s growing on me, but I kind of appreciate it like I do the goofier Paul McCartney songs on the white album.. it’s a vibe, I just don’t know if I’m the lad or lads to receive the vibe
Not bashing him in the least, he is talented, but not for me. But the idea of him being a guitar genius is a bit much. The guitar has evolved... From 5 strings to 10. Alternative tunings have been around for generations. I can appreciate the minimalist aspect but the band, The Presidents of the United States of America have a total of 5 strings in a 3 piece band. Collier did not reinvent the wheel.
This is derivative of Vincent - don mclean. It’s easier to cop something than it is to make a parody.. and parody’s are rewriting someone else’s work… This guy is fine, but he gets way more push and credit than he deserves. Open your eyes wider than the radio and maybe you’ll find some finer musicians too.

One thing I love about this is that it’s not just his crazy guitar skills, it’s the beauty of open tuning
what open tuning is it?
@@andrealombardo1838 Open F but with capo 3rd fret so Eflat? Maybe some sort of EbSus..?

Well, I wouldn‘t call this crazy guitar skills, but he is very comfy playing it,and it still impresses me.
I love cozy nice guitar playing like this. Seems so comfortable with the instrument
Crazy skills, you made me chuckle...
Not crazy but he does have very good guitar skills.
It must be really lovely to have a neighbor like him

Can someone tell me the name of that five-string guitar?
He designed it and had it custom made
To guitarists it's nothing special, but as an all round musician he's fantastic

Jacob is a wonderful musician, but doesn't have "Crazy Skills" on the guitar.
He is a terrific pianists though...
Crazy skills on piano
The guitar skills aren't very wild (Cause, I mean, Jullian Lage exists) but I always loved the timbre of it on this tune
There is nothing to be surprised he playing from open tuning but still nice

starry, starry night...
Is that a KoaGS Mini? Sounds great-
It’s his custom 5 string Taylor. Tuned to D A E A D I think? He’s a mad scientist but he’s creating musical bath salts.

His singing range is incredible listen to some of his live performances
This just looks like an intermediate guitarist to me but I know he can obviously surpass this.
Reminds me of don McLean, castles in the air
This is just playing guitar
The dude is playing a five string guitar, which is already wild, but he’s got two of the strings missing
Wait nvm, the first two strings are just hard to see. I can hear them on the rewatch. It’s still wild that it’s a five string
Watch the Paul David interview with him in it. He gets into the details of it and it's really quite cool.
