  • This is the first-hand account of how Navy Arms founder, Val Forgett, Jr. cleared the famed Bannerman's Island of all live ordnance before its sale by the Bannerman Family in 1958.
Less well known is that this job to clear the island is how Val obtained the funding for his first contract with Gregorelli-Uberti for the first replica 1851 Colt revolvers made by Navy Arms. The cost to begin the project was $5,000.00, which in 1958 was massive. (The average cost of a new home was $19,000.00).
This video was recorded at a meeting of the Armor and Arms Club of New York in the 1990's and includes Val's personal photos shown as he describes the process of removing hundreds of tons of volatile explosives, carefully as possible, while under a deadline to get it done.

What an incredible account of the history - and danger, of this island. So glad this gentleman shared his story with us, and generations to come.

For most of my adult life, beginning with my time in the Army 63 years ago, I have had a fascination with the Island. This is a valuable record of the story of its history. If you are a weapons person, this is a terrific account........enjoy...

Tours of the island are available. Minus the live ordnance, of course... :)

A close freind of mine Bob Ferris (Uncle Bob) from Yuma told me of his visit back in the 80's may have been earlier when Val first purchased the building
