There isn't a day goes by that I don't boot up the computer come to You Tube and look for a Thomas Johnson video. been an avid fan for better than 6-8 maybe more years . been here so long lost track of the time. I'm 81 and don't do the woodworking I used to. down to occasional repairs now. but still watch and learn every time I see you at work. I pick up on something I didn't know. just goes to show you that old adage is true! "YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN" Thanks for teaching this old dog new tricks! Tom! and for sharing. ECF

The best advice you have given me has been to learn to accept some imperfections as part of a piece’s history. My dilemma remains how to decide which imperfections should be left alone and which can be fixed with my limited skill set.
As a student of restoration, the idea to only fix that which distract from the piece as a whole. Thomas have some excellent videos where he doesn't remove all the scratches, but rather blend the scratches with the finished piece. The was a table with 3 obvious water marks from cups. And some other scratches. He didn't completely got rid of the water marks, but faded them enough so that it would remain part of the provenance, without drawing your eyes to them. I'm sure Thomas can explain it better and give more details.

Thanks Eddy! Yes, I agree. Another factor is can a particular defect be corrected later? Like if you have an opportunity to repair something while the piece is disassembled, but can't be repaired once the piece is glued back together

I was surprised when you repaired the table leg then immediately cut it off (what the, huh??). Then you redid it with the dowel and it made perfect sense. I have just such a repair that I plan to tackle some day. I'm sure glad the viewer sent that question 'before' I finally got around to it. Great show, Tom. 😊👍

Watching your repairs gave me the courage to try repairing my grandfather clock case. It had been knocked over and the finial was broken off, with a chip missing. It took three tries to match the color. I sneaked up on it, just as you do, not dark enough, not dark enough, a little more and there it was. Thank you for your guidance, Mr. Johnson

This one gets bookmarked! The washer for the drawer pull was called a counter sunk finish washer where I bought it. Very handy and nice looking too.

Good morning Thomas. As an addicted viewer of your videos I saved this one as a tutorial. Fantastic service of yours. I once had to repair a table with 3 "bended / curved" legs and used the same methode you did. Art the end i plugged the screw hole (only one long wood screw) with a dowel that i cut, sanded and stained afterwards. today i hardly can find the repair spot anymore. Regarding your advise for the "Glas knob" I would suggest to drill out the hole and glue a suitable wooden dowel in it. After that the lady can still use a wood screw after drilling a small pilot hole, The knob will cover the dowell - if not stained to match the drawers wood. What a lovely selection of questions and answers Tom. This is the way to keep the art alive as so many old school skills are dying out. Machines have their place but if you want to truly restore without wrecking a piece replicating the original methods with as near to original tools and glues is vital. Your counsel on how not to over restore is so refreshing too.

Oh, such a GREAT idea, Tom (#askTomJohnson). I have no doubt you will be inundated with questions. Thanks so much for this helpful video. I, for one, frequently have problems clamping odd pieces together. I also don't have a lot of power tools yet (like a band saw, so GOOD). Wonderful, wonderful advice on all subjects. How about that bird's eye maple? You say it's 'quilted' - I've not heard of that & folks have such lovely pieces that they are restoring. This is heart-warming, for sure! Thanks for the video!

Hi Thomas. Thank you for your knowledge. As we don’t see much quality furniture production nowadays we rely on good people like you for the preservation of these gems from the past. I don’t think IKEA restoration will be a thing in the next century lol. That Berkey and Gay sideboard is absolutely the most beautiful piece I have seen. I had to pause and inspect the detail. As much as I love woodworking this is something way beyond my meagre talents…. and budget, But very inspiring.

dislike exageration: you have helped me with at least 30 methods of repair/restoration. I make new, less ornate, "arte brute" furniture but with precious wood - for those whose decor matchs. Watching repairs/glue ups of Barroque/Recocco so instructive to methods to "get it together" proper. Congradulations

I am amazed that some people take the time to email you about something you cover numerous times in your videos. It would probably take them less time to search your videos and find the answer they were looking for, and they might learn something else in the process. You handle it so well, instead of replying the obvious - "take a little time and effort to look it up yourself, please"

Argh! I did something I've never done before. I had my visiting mother in my shop and as we talked I was gluing drawers with wood glue. A few days later she left and I went back to my project. That's when I realized I forget to square off the drawer and clamped it....slightly crooked! How can I take it apart? I've never had to unglue wood glue before and don't want to damage this very, very old wash cabinet that belonged to my grandmother! Help! Because of this problem I now have a Do Not Enter policy for my little shop. lol lesson learned. PS...I absolutely love these kinds of videos. You're advise and help is tremendous. Thank you.
You're welcome!That is too bad! Use heat and white vinegar. Heat the joints with a hairdryer and begin tapping with a hammer. If there are any spaces get vinegar in them with a syringe and keep tapping taping tapping...
