UA-cam recommended this channel. I never heard of it before, and watched a video or two before immediately subscribing. Jon Dean is one of the best interviewers I have ever watched anywhere. He is well prepared without ever looking stiff or formal. He lets his guests talk while engaging them in easy yet revealing conversation. You don't need to be gay (I am) to enjoy and learn from each video. A true find that makes UA-cam at times so worthwhile.

I remember watching the Oscars the year The King's Speech won and distinctly remember Ian thanking his boyfriend and referring to him as such. Only Scott Rudin (before he became persona non grata) had thanked his, as he referred to him "partner" John Barlow, on when he won Best Picture for No Country For Old Men, even calling him "honey" on the stage. The three other LGBTQIA+ producers that have ever won Best Picture either didn't give a speech and let others speak or didn't mention any romantic partners explicitly at all. I can't say that it had a big effect on me as I only came out a little more than a year before, but it's something I always remember vividly. It also wasn't until watching this now that I understand how big a thing that was.

Indeed super interview. I’m happy in present time we have more positive ending gay themed movies. For a long time I was put off watching any due to the negative endings. I still remove series/movies from my watchlist when too many gay characters end in brutal ways.
Again great interview, can’t wait to watch the next one.

Jon and indeed Iain, another absolutely " heart stopping" interview. Again not my field of interest... cannot remember the last film I actually watched other than the amazing , ' In from the Side's. Which as you know I am obsessed with! ( Whilst on that subject as my age shows for me ' Queer as Folk' was groundbreaking and indeed life changing! Manchester, Northern and no apologies! The speed of change and direction in the last two decades is astounding! Long may it continue. Let all just become the " norm". But note of caution! Never take the progress for granted or indeed ( we) are completely accepted and in the mainstream. It could be all taken away from us.
Jon, this series and podcast just simply is the best! Thank You! Superb!

Another fantastic interview Jon, you have really nailed some great people to interview, and I am so enjoying this series, and your interviewing skills are top notch might I add. Gosh, I now feel so old when I suddenly realised my first seeing a gay character on TV was Stephen in Dynasty ! which was so huge in my formative years as a 15/16 teenager, just taking his first steps out into the world. It's so fantastic to experience today , and over the past number of years, all the great LGBTQ+ films and series available to find & watch. Its been very nostalgic too, with many of these particular genres of films, looking back at all the different times since my youth, and seeing things that often happened to the characters, being similar, mirroring or having meaning in my life, relationships, friendships and events. Thanks again for a really interesting, lovely positive show. 🫂🤍🙏

Fascinating how long it took for someone at the Oscars to do what Mr. Canning did. The first time it happened at the Tony awards (“And I’d like to thank my lover…”) was for “Torch Song Trilogy” in like 1982.

My favorite part of the interview is the 08:50 mark. “..I’ve seen some of Shame…”. Lol

Tom Cruise wouldn't have been comfortable playing a gay character ? Is he comfortable playing a straight character every day ?

I hope that he is not doing a Sam Smith saying that he was the first at the Oscars.

What about a Trans character being played by a straight woman when there are tons of trans actors who could play the character but are not given any opportunities for work?

So much respect, HEARTSTOPPER is a tremendous gift to the world, but especially LGBTQ youth. Thanks! 🧡❤💙💚🩷
