- In the summer of 1978, News 8's Ted Leitner took a look at what jobs the San Diego Padres were doing in addition to playing baseball. Athletic endorsements sure have changed since the days when Randy Jones, Rollie Fingers and Dave Winfield were appearing in local car commercials. As most know, Ted also ended up with another job. 2019 will mark Ted's 40th season as the radio voice of the Padres. See more throwback clips of our San Diego Padres here: www.cbs8.com/st...
Growing up in SD I remember seeing Randy Jones' Terry Allen Datsun commercials on the tube....memories.
My team forever.
I met rollie fingers around 1980 at cottonwood golf club in el cajon. Great guy. Got his autograph he signed Acts 4:12
Rollie Fingers should have been doing commercials for mustache wax. He's a natural!
Gaylord Perry and vaseline
Far-out hot dog basket catch by Derrel Thomas at 2:33
Derrel Thomas, he was primarily a CF, 2B and SS, but was also a legendary utility man. He played every single position except pitcher at least once during his career. He did two tours in San Diego with the Padres.
Crazy how young Uncle Teddy sounds!
That didn't sound like Ted Leitner lol. Maybe it's just an audio quality issue, but it sounds like he put some more emphasis on his voice some time after this.
Would Winfield even fit in a Datsun?🤣
puros recuerdos de. mis. padres. de. san. diego
MLB players now would not play for 100K a season now, they'd laugh and demand more! Greedy, greedy! I miss the older times back then, baseball was played sure to make a living, but it was played with passion not with $$ in mind.
I know why Winfield went to New York.
