Internal Family Systems (IFS) and trauma #freeonlinecourses with Richard Schwartz Internal Family Systems and Janina Fisher TIST trauma therapy/somatics (free webinar: therapywisdom.com/2022/11/18/...)
    Video Transcript:
Janina Fisher: And I can still remember in 1996, I picked up the second book of Mosaic Mind because I was desperate for help with some very difficult clients. As I read it, everything made so much sense to me. It provided an understanding of complex individuals, and my head was spinning with insights. It offered a simple and positive way of working with them. I've been forever grateful, and I'm glad that you'll be able to share this work with our audience.
Richard Schwartz: Thank you, Janina. It's great to be with you again, and I'm very thankful for your support of IFS over the years and your teaching of it. I'm excited to have our conversation.
IFS has evolved over time. It's been about 40 years since I started on this journey, and it's continuously moving towards a psycho-spiritual model rather than just psychotherapy. It's also being used to support social activists in their activism from this place we call "Self." So it's a timely topic for me. Here's a condensed intro because we don't have much time.
Basically, the idea is that everyone is, in a sense, a multiple personality. Not in the sense of having multiple personality disorder, but we all have what I call "parts." Other systems use different terms like sub-personalities and ego states. My belief is that having these parts is a natural aspect of the mind and a positive thing. Each part has precious and valuable resources and talents that can help us in our lives. They are all there for good reasons, and it's the natural state of the mind to be that way.
We are born with these parts, either manifest or dormant. As we go through life, they become more active and engaged. If we didn't experience any trauma, they would remain in their naturally valuable states, and we would hardly notice them as they collaborate and support us. However, trauma and attachment injuries disrupt this natural state. They force the parts into roles that they don't like but feel are necessary to protect us based on the trauma we experienced.
Unfortunately, these parts get frozen in time during the trauma, believing that we are still the vulnerable child who needs their protection. The name "Internal Family Systems" is partly related to how similar it is to external families, where children are forced by family dynamics or trauma to assume roles that can be extreme and damaging for their well-being.
