Blackpool hardly existed until William Butcher enters the scene...a Kirkham man who joined the perks of being in Blackpool to profit from looting shipwrecks to make his money as a wrecker ( someone who uses lights to deliberately wreck ships and then live off other people's fortunes. ) Fascinating history of the beginnings of more colourful things to come!
Hi biker that was interesting to know massive place back in the day raikes hall gardens etc cool about the story of ghosts too love the then and now pics 👍
Great video, thanks. That triangular area with grass and shrubs that you see at the start and end of the video outside the Salvation Army Citadel ( Blackpool Grammar School as was ) was an EWS (Emergency Water Supply) during and for a while after WW2. It was like a small mill lodge or reservoir. Overflow classes from the School were held in the rooms of the church opposite during the 50's. The tuck shop was on the corner of Church Street and the little road that the Synagogue is (was?) on. You could get packets of three Park Drive or Woodbines if you looked old enough and not in school uniform. Butcher probably changed his name to Boucher or Bowcher because "boucher" is French for butcher, but so much more classy, dontchaknow? One thing I really enjoyed in the video was the sight of all the fancy red brickwork and terra cotta copings and ornamentation in the front garden walls. That and bay windows typify the Blackpool I grew up in. As to Air Raid Shelters, the public ones that were built in the streets and spare patches of land were built of common brick - not good red engineering brick, only four and a half inch thick (I think) with concrete roofs, either lightly reinforced or unreinforced. They wouldn't have stood a direct hit with a loaded shopping bag, let alone a bomb. They might have coped with mild blast and were there for morale I suppose. Thanks for the memories. Robert
Such a shame that it's all gone apart from the pub. I can understand why though. Your doin a cracking job here Biker. Loving this history stuff. There's loads of people doing vlogs on Blackpool at the moment but I'm finding yours the most interesting. Happy new year & all the very best for 2021👍
You have inspired me to research more about blackpool I was born in the martin area of the pool in 1964 when to St George High school thanks for the history lesson m8
Rakes hall and salvation army building are beautiful pieces of architect. Ones that should never be demolished....why did they close and demolish the central station?
What an amazing video. Been going to Blackpool every year for the last 50 and never heard of Raikes Hall. Incredible. So just walk up from Church Street in the centre of town and we are there ??
Oh my gosh such amazing historical info! No one thinks Blackpool has any Historical Past. It's fab to see and listen to such great info. Are there any walking Tours for people to go on? Like when in other Towns or Cities.
Thanks for this video. Great stuff! I recently visited the Raikes Hall area to get an idea of the scale of the park and it's layout. A favourite YT video of mine is "A Brief History Of Blackpool". It points out that the attractions in the town set up for the genteel, middle class visitor (North Pier/Winter Gardens/Raikes Hall) were quickly over run by the more numerous worker class from the factories, demanding more exciting entertainment.😊
Happy new year to. Another interesting vlog
great video
