- Florida and Florida State met in New Orleans in one of the most highly anticipated rematches in Sugar Bowl history (until 1997 atleast). One month earlier, Florida State staged a incredible comeback at Doak Campbell Stadium in rallying from a 31-0 deficit to finish with a 31-31 tie of their instate rivals.
The scoreboards at the Superdome read "31-31" and "5th period" prior to kickoff. True to form, the 1st-quarter ended with both teams tied at 3-3. The 2nd-quarter is when the offensive fireworks began. Following a Florida fumble, Florida State struck immediately, with a 73-yard halfback pass from RB Warrick Dunn to O'Mar Ellison (4:09-mark) to mark the longest play in Sugar Bowl history. Florida State followed that with a 16-yard TD pass from Danny Kannell to Kez McCorvey (5:58-mark) to take a 17-3 lead. The Gators responded with an 82-yard TD pass from sophmore QB Danny Wuerrfel to freshman WR Ike Hillard (6:55-mark) to break Ellison's record which stood all of 8 minutes. Florida State closed out the first-half with a 24-yard Dan Mowrey FG to take a 20-10 lead into intermission.
The scoring slowed in the 3rd-quarter, with Dan Mowrey's 45-yard FG accounting for the period's only points. The Seminoles maintained their 23-10 lead until less than 5 minutes remained in the game, when Danny Wuerrfel leaped across the goaline from the 1-yardline (14:02-mark) to trim the lead to 23-17. The TD added suspense but Florida was unable to recover the ensuing onside kick. The Gators had one final shot but Seminoles LB Derrick Brooks picked off an errant throw to seal Florida State's 23-17 victory.
FSU QB Danny Kannel completed 23 of 40 passes, for 252 yards and 1 TD; RB Warrick Dunn rushed 14 times for 58 yards and completed his only pass for the 73-yard TD to O'Mar Ellison. Ellison led FSU with 4 receptions for 102 yards and the TD, while Kez McCorvey caught 4 passes for 84 yards and 1 TD.
Danny Wuerffel completed 28 of 39 passes for 394 yards, 1 TD and 1 Int in defeat. WR Jack Jackson led the Gators in receiving with 6 receptions for 128 yards while Ike Hillard added 3 catches for 119 yards and 1 TD.
